This will definitely going to impact bitcoin positively. The way to promote any product is to get it to media especially social media, tv and radios. This will add more value to bitcoin and crypto currencies in general. Hope to see another pump as market is currently at the accumulation stage.

Yes,it is all over media now.All the rich idiots are probably giving talks about "how bitcoins are the investment of the future " when they have no idea what blockchain is or what consensus algorithm does.
To add on to it,our hacker bros are really getting all the attention with their ransomwares.

Our media here don't even know what bitcoin is so I can't speak about that. I believe that this could be both as good and bad publicity. It really depends on the people watching it. If someone is close minded then he probably will believe whatever he hears on TV, otherwise he will look for it and understand how It works and eventually start using it.

Bitcoin is not being discussed in most part of the world on the media. Although Media most talks about popular personalities and things but i never saw any documentary or talk show being held on the topic of bitcoin, though Bitcoin is the most popular digital currency these days. Lately it has been discuss in the passed week on media but that too on the issue of Ransome Virus.

I have seen bitcoin mentioned in TV and radio programs in the past hours due the ramsomware attack. Some people did a surprisingly good job at promoting it as a neutral tool and not as a tool for criminals, drug dealers and so on, so that was positive.

Did you see it on the mainstream media in your country? what did they say?

Im also wondering if all publicity is good publicity or not. Im not sure if the fact that being linked to the ramsomware thing is good even if it helps spreading BTC out, but most people are idiots and will not research further so it all comes down to how much of a good job the person explaining BTC does.

The publicity is actually a good thing depending on the areas where we are looking at it because even though the media outburst is mostly ways to pull down bitcoin but what they dont know is that those who are into bitcoin are not leaving while those outside the crypto world that are getting their interest aroused and then indirectly bring them or drag them into bitcoin and by so doing it means increase in the penetration of bitcoin.

In the long run this exposure will help. People will find out bitcoin is not so sinister after all when a trusted friend is using it.

We cannot clearly say what is the impact of using Bitcoin as payment for ransom in a ransomware attack. Some might say it is a good publicity since hackers advertise bitcoin in media, others say that it is bad for the image of bitcoin. Well for me, the listeners are the one who can answer if what they hear about bitcoin is good or bad. If the listener is not an open-minded person at all and thing that bitcoin is related to crimes and vice versa, they might think that bitcoin is evil. On the contrary, if the listener is enthusiastic about technology and have heard about bitcoin and have his own digging, then it is a good thing.

Publicity of bitcoin in the media always comes in two way, positive and negative. It is all up to the listener on how they will interpret what they heard.

Bitcoin was mentioned in all the articles I read about this, I was surprised at how little it was mentioned because usually a big deal is made of bitcoin when it is involved in ciminal activity.

I think it is a good thing because it exposes bitcoin to more people and many times there will be a link to give people more information about bitcoin.

200 000 infected computers where Bitcoin is used to commit a crime, is not good publicity for our technology. I would much rather have read that

200 000 computers are running full nodes and that this is the strongest decentralized network in the world. { I think it is, but it would have been

much better, if we had a few hundred thousand more }  Wink

The mainstream media runs with negative news, because it draws much more attention than positive news.  Roll Eyes

Bitcoin is spreading all over people and i guess its very good as the adoption for it a lot.Well i would say it has been used in a very bad way as you may have heard about the wannacry where they are taking bitcoins as a ransom.

Its ok for Bitcoin to gain some media mileage, but if the news is negative like whats happening now that Bitcoin is being an accessory to pay for the ransom then its not good. Others say good publicity and bad publicity is the same, its still publicity, but in real life bad publicity turns off people who are interested to try Bitcoin.

All publicity has something of good. People see confusing news, then some of them will look for themselves for more trustworthy sources of information, some of them may end up here, or any another place they can find more accurate information, and end up investing in Bitcoin.

At this point even if a very few % of people that hear the news go deeper and buy Bitcoins, the effect in the economy wouldn't be insignificant

Bloomberg has done an article about it:

https://www.bloomberg.com/gadfly/articles/2017-05-15/bitcoin-s-just-too-tempting-when-you-re-being-extorted

Quote
Behind the rise of ransomware lies the rise of Bitcoin, the virtual currency of choice for hacker blackmailers who steal huge amounts of sensitive data. That doesn't mean Bitcoin is inherently to blame, but it does suggest that business has a Bitcoin problem. Buying the currency has become a form of short-term protection, however dicey, against attacks.

The logic is twisted but tempting. Hoarding Bitcoin to pay off hackers may seem a better option for companies that either don't or can't make the heavy investments needed to see off the attacks in the first place.

Do you know why the ransomware attack failed? It is because they demanded payment in bitcoins.  Tongue

http://gadgets.ndtv.com/internet/features/few-ransomware-victims-are-paying-hackers-because-using-bitcoin-is-hard-1694340

With articles like these, expect the common man to be very confused.

I'm trying to sell some internet stuff with bitcoin lately and many people who find my sale topics from google want to pay via banks. Surprisingly i was able to sell my stuff with bitcoin but there were many people who didn't know what bitcoin is.
I insisted on getting paid in bitcoins so i refused the offers from those who had no idea about.
If everybody does like me, bitcoin will get boosted big time.
This lack of knowledge on the other hand is a good thing somehow. It shows us that bitcoin is still nowhere near big and there is much more room to grow.

Lack of knowledge about Bitcoin among common people is understandable. But it is ridiculous to blame the failure of WannaCry on the decision to ask for payments in Bitcoin. The reason it failed was that a security researcher got lucky and triggered the kill switch.
If anything, all future malware payments will be demanded in bitcoins.

i don't know if they talked about it or not, we have a voting these days for presidency and that is all everyone is talking about Smiley

but reading this topic i did a quick google search about bitcoin in my language and i loved the first result:
(translating) it said "bitcoin is an open source money"

i also found out that the "cyberpolice" official website is calling it "decentralized internet cash".

there are a lot of warnings about wannacrypt and how to prevent getting infected with it, and nothing negative about bitcoin.

and fuck the screenshot seems scary with its countdown to its payment being raised and your files will be destroyed thing Shocked

With more and more this kind of news popping up every now and then, more than 50% of the people I know are aware of bitcoin and most of them actually know that bitcoin is neutral. I guess bitcoin has successfully build a "neutral" or even "positive" image over the past many years.
