Ad maiora!
There should be a "conspiracy theories" sub in the off-topic section.

Ok, but am I right in my understanding that it's a direct rumor? (you are saying it). Still better than complete hearsay Wink
I did not attend Defcon, so I have no first hand knowledge.

I was at Defcon at the Rio in Las Vegas this year. I brought up Bitcoin several times to people at booths and after presentations. Absolutely everyone I talked to supported Bitcoin. I wanted to buy something from a seller after the NinjaTV presentation and asked him if he would take payment in Bitcoin. He said sure but he didn't have the ability to do it here. I asked why, he said he wasn't set up to do it but he would do it the next day. I met up with him after the GSM Sniffing track and made my purchase. He confirmed on his laptop that he got the coins. I don't know if he was doing it on the DL but I don't think so.
I would think that he likely did not want it to be public that he was selling something for BTC, as IMO there is a good chance that he did not report the sale to you. This would make it so he would pay a little bit less in sales and income taxes. (nevada may not have sales tax IDR)
I wouldn't doubt this. I think that too many people would be accepting bitcoin there for him to not be setup to accept a bitcoin payment only to be able to receive a TX (actually verify that he received it) in private later. He likely wanted to keep it on the DL that he was taking bitcoin so the tax authority would not be looking for his bitcoin related sales later down the road.

Let's see if this post is removed as the article says it could be...

"The team added that Bitcoin Forum, a bitcoin community where Nakamoto used to communicate, usually removes posts connecting bitcoin with CIA."

I first had this thought after my cryptography class in 2010 talked about the CIA's involvement in the SHA 2 algorithm, what better way for the CIA -> IRS to sifter out all the potential dark web drug dealers and money-launders!

That could be true. It's not like he refused the sale and it didn't seem like accepting Bitcoins was taboo.
I would think that most people at defcon would likely be very much in favor of accepting bitcoin as their principles very much line up with the principles generally behind bitcoin. This would really be the only explination as to why he would not already be "set up" to accept bitcoin.

I was at the Rio too...Went to the impromptu "Satoshi Square" following the Bitcoin Skytalk by Dave Perry, Bryan Micon, #roboshrem, and ytcracker. The atmosphere seemed a good deal better than last year to me. That said, you would think that bitcoin would indeed be more popular at defcon than it seems to be, but hopefully the situation is improving.
The person I talked to has been going to Defcon for a long time and was on the short list to get a black badge. He had an... unexpectedly bad experience this year and will probably never go back.

What I posted earlier was a summary of what he told me the organizers he knew had told him. That's why I said it was a rumour.

And FWIW, if someone showed me proof that bitcoin was created by the NSA, CIA, China, Paul Krugman, or anyone, I'd say..."So what?" It's open source; we can see what the code does. The origin doesn't matter.

I am not sure if they did or not, but if they did delete a few threads its because they are duplicates!!! Good on them!!

Infact!!! I actually reported a few threads to the Moderators HOPING they would remove some, it's starting to become an annoying bitcoin discussion forum full of trolls and idiots.

Why should there be 5 threads talking about the same shit!!! ....

Example --- Lets just say a mod responded to 50 people requesting to have duplicate threads removed and actually removed a few, I am betting someone will turn that into a conspiracy and say  Oo0o0o0 Mods are the CIA operatives Seee seeeee they deleted the threads.. PFFT this is getting ridiculous now.. get over it!

I've heard that Bitcoin talks were banned at defcon this year via orders from high up in the organization, and vendors were instructed not to accept Bitcoin.

That's not the kind of rules I'd expect at the CIA's and NSA's most important recruiting event if Bitcoin was their project.
I would think that the higher ups at defcon *would* want their vendors to accept bitcoin if it was designed by the NSA.

This sounds like mere rumors. Any proof?
Not that I can share, so you should probably just treat it as a rumour.

useless discussion imo, how deep the rabbit-hole goes? how deep you want.
It doesn't matter anyway - they are largely paper tigers.

The CIA and NSA do not have the necessary human capital with which to counter Bitcoin as a social and political movement.

Sure, they have lots of money and resources, and immunity from the law, but in the end they are an organization composed of people, and those people don't have what it takes.

They skated through the last decade by milking patriotism the 9/11 attacks for all their were worth, but that's over now. Their employees are disgruntled, disillusioned, and ageing.

As far as Bitcoin is concerned CIA/NSA agents are punch-clock villains. Ultimately disgruntled employees who are just going through the motions can't win a war of ideas against people who actually believe in what they are doing.
