I hope those people I talked about it are like that. They think, they accept that mistakes and make something out of it but in my case, no. I could say that most of the people I talked about bitcoin are egotistical that if they don't want to, they don't want to. They don't want to accept that they have their mistakes where they should have a profit but they don't. If they think it is a scam, they'll die thinking like that, that kind of people. Some changed but they never even talked about it to me, I just found it in an exchange where they are sending btcs to other people, most of them stayed the same.

Yes, I totally agree with it! It's a matter of choice, always! There will always be better ways to spend money, but it all depends on what we want to do with our money!

In my opinion, no matter how much money and how you spend it is on your own personal choice, people should not care about what you do with your money, even though they are vices, we can't simply just barge in and hinder their personal decision. I agree that smoking is bad and I like that having a reminder of the money that they spent on their vices, but that is where all the help you can do for them, that phase is the time that they are going to decide for themselves. After all, why save people when they are not asking to be saved.

It would be really frivolous to tell someone what they will do with their money, but my post was more focused on the fact that people are constantly saying that Bitcoin is too expensive, even 5 years ago when it only cost $200. But at the same time, these same people spend quite a lot of money on cigarettes, drugs or alcohol, which is in a way their right - but it's actually not just throwing money in the wind but also endangering their own and other people's health around them. Everyone should draw the line and calculate how much they can save in just 10 years if they start acting responsibly towards themselves, money and health.

Some people laughed at me personally 5-6 years ago because I believed Bitcoin had a bright future, and today they are sorry because they missed the opportunity. I'm not saying that someone should invest everything they have in Bitcoin, but that they should think about how to make their lives better and how to preserve the value of what they have today.

In the example I showed, a person who spends 10 EUR a day spends an incredible 36 000 EUR on cigarettes, alcohol and fast food in 10 years, and that is only if he/she is a moderate smoker (one box a day), and if he drinks one beer and eats one hamburger (I'm talking here about an EU average price).

it seems to me that you just created yet another speculator who is more interested in making more $$$ from bitcoin than understanding what bitcoin really is! and that is not something to brag about Wink
not to mention that the same person is going to curse you and leave bitcoin behind if for example price fell from $9700 to $9000 this week.

And just telling people to buy BTC without teaching them about it is quite irresponsible, there just so many things that can go wrong. Maybe the guy will leave his coins on exchange and will get hacked, or will install malicious wallet that will steal his coins, or will lose his private key backup by being careless like people usually are with passwords. And then there's shitcoins like Bcash preying on newbies, and cloud mining, ICO's and other scams.

That will not be a problem if you get an open mind person who can accept other people suggestion because that people care to him and want to give a chance to change his mind and his life. I have an experience about explaining bitcoin to an open-minded person too, and the story ends with he started to invest in bitcoin monthly. That is a moment which he says that I realize that the world has changed, and if we cannot follow the world, we cannot have a better life. Bitcoin brings a chance for me to have a new type of investment, so I follow the path, and now, I am trying to invest in bitcoin monthly.

Many people easy to accept another information from other people but some other is hard to take it because they still believe that the world still the same until now, and they cannot accept the change from the world. But we need to decide what we want to do for our life because only we will know what we want. But I agree that we must not force people to buy bitcoin, let them realize by themselves, and we only need to wait for the light to turn on.

This guy are now buying $10 worth of bitcoins weekly and still spending $10 on his Diamonds for the game. He send me a screenshot of his bitcoin balance and he is very proud of this investment.

You are missing the point of this thread by 20 Miles my friend. The point was never to "brag" about me or to create any speculator.. it was about opening people's closed mindset towards Bitcoin. This person made the statement that Bitcoin was worthless and I used the "Diamonds" that he was buying in that game as an example to open his eyes to what true value is.

Yes, the price might drop tomorrow or a week from now.. but this person now realized that in-game currencies or tokens might be less valuable than Bitcoin. Also remember that the price might increase and then his bitcoins might be more valuable than when he bought it.

I highlighted the dangers and the risks of Bitcoin and that it is not supposed to be an investment..but rather a currency that should be used daily and he understands that.  Wink

While it was about this game, I'd also like to add one of my experiences that had the almost same story but there was a minor difference:

One of my friends contacted me in late 2017 (late after we met in 2010, so 7 years later). During our talks, he told me about his gambling addiction and how he used to will a million rupees with just 10k INR. He made a fortune for himself (that's what he thinks about his winnings) but I thought out of the way and asked him whether he knew about BTC. He said yes, he knew about it. He then asked me what's the catch? Why did I ask him about Bitcoins? Then I told him that what if he'd have invested that 10k INR in BTC and instead gambled with BTC? The winnings he'd have made would have been around at least 10 times if not 20. He told me what if the price could have been dumped. I asked him whether he bought any BTC after seeing the 2013 pump and then when it dumped down back to $300? He said no. I then asked if he bought any when BTC was $3k after reaching its new ATH at $20k? Once again, he said no. I showed him and asked him to calculate what his risks of buying BTC and gambling with it could have been worth today, if he'd have just bought it at its low and kept some. He could have got 1 full BTC for 10k INR when it was $200-250 and if he'd have made it 100 BTC (as 1 million INR is 100x 10k INR), his 100 BTC would have been worth a million dollar, which means he would be having at least 7.70 crore rupees on hands as of today.

People have different vices in their lives, and most of them don't want to give up no matter how bad they are. Smoking is without a doubt bad for your health, but also for the health of everyone in your vicinity, but still a large percentage of the world's population smokes and does not pay too much attention to the price. If we take the example of smokers who consume only one box (20 cigarettes) per day and that the average price of such a box is around 5 EUR (EU) we come to the following figures.

  • 5 EUR x 30 days = 150 per month.
  • 150 EUR x 12 months = 1800 EUR.
  • 10 years of smoking = 18 000 EUR.
  • At current price smoker waste 2 BTC in 10 years.
  • Coffee, alcohol, fast food + all other bad habits = 18 000 EUR extra?

I would say there are always better ways to spend money, but it's all a matter of choice - some people say "you only live once" and "you have to die from something".
In my opinion, no matter how much money and how you spend it is on your own personal choice, people should not care about what you do with your money, even though they are vices, we can't simply just barge in and hinder their personal decision. In regards to the gaming currency versus bitcoin, it is also a matter of personal choice because people have to sate their need for entertainment and enjoyment, life is not always about money, it is just a contributing factor to happiness. Life should be a mix-up of fun and finance because a life without happiness is a bland and boring journey.

I don't understand the people, who are addicted to feemium games like Forge of Empires.
What's the point of buying the in-game currency (In this case-"diamonds"),when you don't make any money out of it.Spending money to increase your success and level in a game seems totally stupid to me.
I thought that only kids and teenagers get addicted to such freemium games.
"Bitcoin is worthless, because it's not physical" Yeah right, the digits in this guy's bank account are worthless, because they are not paper money. Grin

You just made him realize that the money he spend on the game will (regardless if its for his entertainment budget) be more worth it if he instead buy bitcoin, and now he become a bitcoiner too. I hope thats how easy to explain to someone the advantage of investing on bitcoin. Many people are not paying attention because it has no physical features unlike fiat or gold, but aside for being a digital currency it can be a way also to earn money if only you understand the importance of engaging yourself in crypto.

Your friend is truly a true gamers, spending $ 20 a week just to buy diamonds in games. Which is very useless, maybe that hobby really
can't be valued with money. The way you promote bitcoin is very good, no need to argue only show the truth and prove successful. Most of
us are wrong in promoting bitcoin, so bitcoin users are still few with bitcoin which is more than 10 years old. We should show the truth of
bitcoin, surely people will be easily attracted.

Perhaps, this is because the person can see the value of the in-game credits because it improves his gameplay, it benefits him the same way how we see bitcoin which provides us with services that we can use to make our life easier. It is just that, there are some comparisons where bitcoin is more superior but people didn't see at as they already have their beliefs. Maybe because we all have different nature and background, but what we just need is a strong argument like this, and not to force someone to buy and accept Bitcoin.

Applause for this great execution of the idea. This should be our way of attracting people into bitcoin. Turn the table and make them feel how good bitcoin is.

Such a meaningful idea. And glad you made up his mind and influence him. Though not all players will be convinced, but the way you explained it to him definitely will change his beliefs about bitcoin. This is something we can also show to those who are spending something online but doesn't give a value at the end. For some, they can actually sell higher levels of their account but still deficit when you will imagine and calculate all the spent diamonds, etc.

I had this similar inkling towards a certain game as well. Perhaps many of you guys here know Cabal NA. I was ranked on that server with one of the highest, maxed-out gear in 2019 before I quit and believe me, it's nuts that I literally spent thousands of $$$ just to get that strong--and people are also willing to give you more than what you invested for the said character. My stint in Cabal NA lasted for 9+ years before I moved countries and settled on the country I'm currently at. The amount for me is ridiculous, amounting to $5000 for my investment and sold everything for $8500. I already knew things about bitcoin but even then I still chose to invest more on character rather than bitcoin. Guess that's just how some games affect the mindset of some people chasing that number one spot.

Well, actually this statement of yours does really have a point thats why some or even most people would really have that kind of aim in mind on trying to be the top player or on top ranks
because they do know that it can really possible be sold in future in much more value but it actually depends on the demand and popularity of the game which the said account would really be worth of .

I have experienced when selling out my MU account which i have spent some thousand bucks and sell out even more.We arent saying that it is worth to spend on but there
are circumstances which do have exceptions and thats the mind of other people.

Well, you're asking people who have no idea about the industry whether they believe Bitcoin has value. On the other hand, they're basically professionals in the video game you play, hence they'll have a better understand of supply and demand and the value of the in-game currency. Asking them whether Bitcoin has value is the same as asking a tribesman what the value of the euro is—he'll have no idea because he isn't experienced with it.

Rather than asking questions like this and helping them build on their ignorance, you should first educate people, and then ask your questions. At least that way they can form a more reasonable opinion on the subject, rather than pulling their opinion out of thing air.

Sometimes you just have to confront people with the things that are right before their eyes.  Wink  No need for you to go into arguments or to force people to buy anything, you just show them the truth and then wait for the light to come on.  Grin

Problem is this light often will never come on Tongue
You cant make everyone to understand. You can't make people do what you think are best because:
1. you can be wrong
2. they have free will
3. they have right to make mistakes

This is problem with having addict/gambler in familiy, you can't save him before he saves himself. Only then you can help a bit.
All make their own life decisions and must live with it.

You have to understand that a new perspective on things, sometimes gives people the "spark" needed to light the fire. I was a victim of Credit card fraud many years ago and I searched the Internet for something else that can be used to buy things online, without giving someone else access to the rest of your money and that is how I got to Bitcoin.

That's where the fun starts and spark an interest to use Bitcoin. I was once the same as you, but I ain't a victim of fraud, I just want to be safer than giving out some of your cc or debit details.
I can say, that guy you talked with in the online game is an intelligent person. Not, only because he listened to you, but because he then divided his entertainment fund, half for his online vices, and half for his retirement plan.

Since I started playing the game, I spend ZERO money on Diamonds  Cheesy

Isn't that a pay to win game? lol

Most probably, I was an online gamer and spending $20 every week seems like a p2w game structure to me.

I quickly made some rough calculations :   $20/week x 4 weeks x 12 months = $960 per year x 5 years =  $4800 spend on buying Diamonds for that game.

That is exactly how we should calculate the price of things in life.

How much does your 1 usd everyday coffee after lunch costs in 10 years?? 1x5x4x12x10 = 2400.

This is an interesting perspective on how we should make our budget and decide how much we really want to pay for entertainment, coffee, and so on.

Ofc it is important to buy a coffee or spend money in entertainment, but we really should know how much we are spending.

Well, obviously this did not happen in a few hours. I just sparked his interest and I switched on the light for him. (Or.. like some people say... pointed at the rabbit hole)

*snip*

Noice. I'm personally more interested in what was the turning point for him though. What did you say or what article/statement did he read that changed his mind towards his "Bitcoin is worthless" mindset?

I saw a Bitcoin video on YouTube about mining and it sparked my interest and then I met someone at a party and discussed it and one thing led to another and here I am many years after that, being a huge supporter of this technology. (because I got it and I wanted to know more)

I did give him some resources on YouTube (for beginners) and I also directed him to this forum to fill in the blanks, he just did the rest on his own.  Wink

You have successfully advised him "how important investment is, for his own future".
In the next five years your friend already has a very large investment asset of $ 10 x 4 = $ 40 / week and $ 40x12 = $ 480 / year, so at times five years $ 480x5 = $ 2,400 this is a success for your friend.
Of course, from a total investment of $ 2,400 there could be a change of double centipedes if the price of Bitcoin goes up and vice versa, this is if he understands the truth that's' tabugan him when he stopped playing the game Forge of Empires.

If many people understand the (tricks) of your advice 'maybe' people realize the importance of investing in Bitcoin, if he knows.

I'm glad to hear about this 'investment'. Your friend can have a bright future in the future.

Greetings to your friends from the Bitcointalk Forum community, your friends do something that should be copied by many people.
