Ira (bearbones) and I were chatting today. We've come up with a new slogan which should be made the official slogan of Bitcoin:

Bitcoin
Magic Computer Money

So the new strategy is that whenever you're introducing Bitcoin to someone, don't try to explain how it works, or why it's so amazing. Just say, "it's magic computer money."

Also, when users open up the Satoshi desktop client software, there should be a new splash screen that flashes black and yellow real fast for about 5 seconds and it should say "MAGIC COMPUTER MONEY"

Thoughts?

That's essentially how I explained what bitcoin is when I sent a casascius bar to my grandfather as a gift.

attention everyone who has not worked in marketing ever in their lives:

selling an idea or a product is NOT about explaining the technical merits or even being accurate in the descriptions of the product.

what you want to build is an emotional connection and therefore an emotional interest. everything else will fail, even if you intend only to sell it to 'technical' people -- they are not unsusceptible to the basic emotional influences, even if they say they are.

that is much less effective than "magic computer money", sorry.

'engineered' makes it sound like it's something very technical. that's not a good way to sell it to people on an emotional level.

I see your creative sarcasm, and raise you a seriously considered slogan:

Engineered Digital Currency

Bitcoin isn't some lame internet fad/scam thing, it's ENGINEERED, and that's why you use it.  This gives mass-adopters an idea (and a feeling) about the design and technology behind bitcoin without making any brains hurt.

Meh.

Don't like it.

Sounds both cheap and scammy.

The kind of slogan you'd hear at a carnival.

LOL people, again, I was joking Smiley  Does one need to use [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags to convey sarcasm???

Haha actually I really like the slogan... Bitcoin *is* magical... Smiley

Bearbones.

Yes.  But eventually, we'll be able to travel and withdraw local currency from our BTC balance, or event better spend our BTC with merchants around the world!

paulie_w, MARKETING is exactly what BTC needs.  To move beyond the sophisticated early adopters and bring it to wider audience.

Great point.  However have you tried getting money in and out of some of the exchanges without having to walk cash to back or drug store or waiting days even weeks for a withdrawal to hit?

For traders, merchants, speculators and new users alike this friction is a real pain point.

So until this bottle neck can be alleviated I'd refrain from calling BTC easy to use.

Once you have BTC in the system. There's nothing better!

Have you tried converting EUR to USD? You have to pay exorbitant fees, walk to a currency changer or bank. It is a hassle. I'd refrain from complicating the issue unnecessarily.

you guys are missing the point.

it's whimsical and a pleasure. just like a lot of tech companies call their offering "magic" as a way of calming peoples' nerves and saying "it'll be alright".

it's a good idea. stop worrying so much about how it's technically-not-this-or-that.

(if anyone cares, i have a background in marketing and work for a marketing company).

"Magic Computer Money" as a specific phrase was a joke.

The idea that Bitcoin should be demonstrated and used as opposed to explained is something I stand firmly behind. Do you explain the federal reserve and fractional reserve banking to everyone before you hand them a dollar? No. People don't really want to understand money, they just want to use it. Likewise, Bitcoin is superior money because using it is easier. Therefore, if they simply use it, they do not need to and never will understand it.
