I'm pretty sure bitcoin as a payment and ransomware was a popular method among hackers for years already. It's just that they're now more into demanding for bitcoin due to it probably being alot easier to attain and sell, and also because of it's pseudo anonymity instead of Ukash like in the past. Whether or not bitcoin goes mainstream, we should expect alot more methods on how hackers can steal our money. As techonology is evolving every year, so is their methods and ideas on how to exploit for their own benefit.

Bitcoin's popularity is not related to the popularity of ransomware.
Ransomware going 'mainstream' doesn't even make sense, what are you talking about?
All ransomware now uses Bitcoin for payments.
