That TeraFLOP/s figure on the Bitcoin Watch front page is meaningless and bears no resemblence to anything whatsoever; it's just there so users can boast about how powerful the network of Bitcoin mining rigs is. I kinda wish they didn't have it because it just causes confusion.

The TeraFLOP's number is an estimate based off of the hashing ratios of common cpus and their FLOP's as benchmarked. It can be inaccurate, but not by that much.

The entire Bitcoin Mining network produces 0 FLOPS.

Floating Point operations are not utilized within Bitcoin Mining. For all we know, the referenced "K Computer" may not be able to even do 1MH/s due to an architecture organized purely for maximizing FLOPS.

At some point the entire network is going to come alive with an AI. the first thing it might do is hide the fact that is has become aware and sentient. the next thing would be to insure it's continued existence. I guess after that it starts looking for a mate. Grin
