Man Synaptic, you're one bitter motherfucker.  Sorry to hear about your horrible trades and bad judgement.  How many more days of lashing out should we expect?

Hey buddy, I'm just spreading the love that the bitcoin community sowed.

I love you though, never forget how much I do care about you, Astro.
I feel it.

*fistbump*

aww I love happy endings!!!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
I don't believe you don't understand...

The performance of K is equivalent to linking around one million desktop computers, Mr. Dongarra said.

How many working desktop computers is bitcoin network currently linking? Ten thousand? One hundred thousand? Half a million?

DamienBlack was referring to BitcoinWatch numbers, as well.
103716 TeraFLOPS = 103 PetaFLOPS
This is 13 times more than this Japanese computer.

I was just waiting for someone to post that Smiley

Measuring in flops is silly, hashes don't use and floating point operations. Anyway, using your numbers, that means that the network is 103 petaflops, so another 8 isn't that much.
DamienBlack, I'm quoting a respectful source -  http://www.bitcoinwatch.com/

Quote
Network Hashrate Gigahashs/s - 8166.60
Network Hashrate TeraFLOP/s - 103716

I'm sorry you think this is trolling.
That TeraFLOP/s figure on the Bitcoin Watch front page is meaningless and bears no resemblence to anything whatsoever; it's just there so users can boast about how powerful the network of Bitcoin mining rigs is. I kinda wish they didn't have it because it just causes confusion.

The TeraFLOP's number is an estimate based off of the hashing ratios of common cpus and their FLOP's as benchmarked.  It can be inaccurate, but not by that much.

Current network hashrate is 103915 teraflop/s while a single super computer is able to make 8.2 petaflop/s.

“It’s a very impressive machine,” Mr. Dongarra said. “It’s a lot more powerful than the other computers.”

The latest ranking of the top 500 computers, to be released Monday, is determined by running a standard mathematical equation. The winning computer was able to make 8.2 quadrillion calculations per second, or in more technical terms, 8.2 petaflops per second.

The performance of K is equivalent to linking around one million desktop computers, Mr. Dongarra said.

Yeah cause bitcoin is serious business to people besides us basement dwellers...

Be afraid everyone.

Until a basement dweller installs a bitcoin client on that computer and runs it for an hour.  Bazinga-he now has tons of bitcoins.

Edit:  And the difficulty gets automatically raised after he mines the X amount needed for the increase.  heh

Well good for him. Maybe he can afford himself some self esteem with all that glittery website gold.

The entire Bitcoin Mining network produces 0 FLOPS.

Floating Point operations are not utilized within Bitcoin Mining. For all we know, the referenced "K Computer" may not be able to even do 1MH/s due to an architecture organized purely for maximizing FLOPS.

At some point the entire network is going to come alive with an AI.  the first thing it might do is hide the fact that is has become aware and sentient.  the next thing would be to insure it's continued existence.  I guess after that it starts looking for a mate.   Grin
