I will do a contrarian view and say that 2014 will be a lean year, we started with an inauspicious beginning (some grinch dumped a big amount of btc on mtgox at the start of January 1st 2014) and we will go up maybe to $2000 and no more. However, 2015 will be a BIG year.

Wow.  That is something to see it in the numbers, percentage wise.  A 170% gain would be NUTS at these levels, but I think anything is possible (including going to close to 0 so don't go overboard.

One things for sure, we're likely to be picking up more participants through this year, the recent spread of media coverage has seen to that. Plus, we've got some big names in the investment space officially entering the market. Can't help thinking that more people fighting for a piece of the pie makes the pieces more valuable... although I expect the fighting to be dirtier. So there could be some serious string pulling to manipulate the price downwards for a significant part of this year. Hodl.

I do get wet dreams thinking of BTC hitting that value Smiley
Keep cool , bro

I will keep cool and HODL but if $10k is hit in 2014 and I hold until 2020 with equal gains I start seeing these kinds of pictures  Cool

Hopefully owning them not just renting for few days  Smiley

Personally, I'd be happy with only $2000 Smiley

Its an even-numbered year. I'll accept record-low growth so long as its growth Wink

Is it gains like this that cause investment professionals to constantly repeat "invest in the startups, not in the currency"? These guys could do so much better if they ignored their own advice...

We're talking about percentages here so take into account that 100% in 2014 would be way more money than in previous years.
I know we have exponential growth so it should be possible but I don't want to get hopes up to high like many on this forum.

I'm joining T. Stuart in his low estimate but I'm going for a low 500% gain.
Don't think we will hit the $10k but I do get wet dreams thinking of BTC hitting that value Smiley

My safe estimate gives a fantastic value for oncoming years and my price change is as follows
- 500% per year
- including halving of blocks in 2016 (resulting in doubling of price)

Making the following ballpark figures
2014  $700
2015  $3500
2016  $17500
2017  $175000
2018  $875000
2019  $4375000
2020  $21875000
No more bitcoins so $21M would be the stabilization value per bitcoin.
$21M hmmm the number 21 again hehehehe Cheesy

Looking at this "safe" estimate I still find the 2020 figure of $21M pretty high Smiley
This would make you 31250% on your money in 6 years Smiley

next year we finish the year at $22,500

This is actually a very reasonable prediction. I predict higher but this is reasonable.

Borsche

Edit: 2013 is not a record annual gain. 2010 is since it is very hard to argue what Bitcoin was worth before Satoshi mined the genesis block in January 2009.

it was worth zero, so there was at least one period with an infinite growth, but nobody really cares as the total volume of that period was less than a thousand dollars

One Token to Move Anything Anywhere
Now, on the verge of a massive adoption phase, even a %1000 increase seems meager in 2014...

See you on the moon, gentlemen.

Hmmm... I'll go for a measly +/- 500% increase next year. Sorry to be so bearish folks!

mark me down for $15,8000 precisely on december 31, 2004.
That would be very impressive.

Bitcoin has posted a record annual gain, measured in USD.

At the start of Jan 1st, 2013, Mt Gox had a bid/ask of 13.45-55, or mid-price of $13.50
At the close of Dec 31st Bitstamp and BTC-E have 730.4-732 & 730-733, or mid-price of $731.35
(Mt Gox is not comparable because its US$ withdrawals do not take < 1 week, hence its bitcoin price is biased upwards).

Trace Mayer's statistics for previous years, now with 2013 completed:

2009  4,867% (uncertain price discovery period)
2010     387%
2011  1,320%
2012     170%
2013  5,317%

One observation is that, so far, odd-numbered years exhibit high-growth, while even-numbered years are consolidation/growth periods.

Even 170% gains in 2014 will be stellar. Happy New Year to all Bitcoin holders!

With respect to Trace Mayer the figures for 2010 come nowhere close to 387%. The closing price on December 31, 2010 was 0.293 USD per BTC. http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#ig1-minzczsg2010-12-31zeg2011-01-01ztgSzm1g10zm2g25zv Now as for the valuation on December 31, 2009, there is a discussion on this in the following thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=322058.0;all rpietila estimated 0.005 USD per BTC, I argued his figure was to high and that 0.000614866 to 0.00130719 USD per BTC was more appropriate. This would place the appreciation in 2010 between 5900% (low end) to 47700% (high end).

Edit: 2013 is not a record annual gain. 2010 is since it is very hard to argue what Bitcoin was worth before Satoshi mined the genesis block in January 2009.
