Seems like it did not finally died on 13 of January 2015.

Do we have any other candidate date?

no, its the day its started dying painful slow death..

If it's a slow death, how can you determine the exact date it started?

Let's see tomorrow.
Because as it's known, the Bible says:

"[Bitcoin]...passus et sepultus est.

Et resurrexit tertia diem secundum scripturas"

With all this deep selling and presumably converting bitcoins to currencies, one does wonder whether the exchanges have enough USD$, Euros, Yuan, etc to cover all withdrawals.  Are all major exchanges independently audited, including exchanges in China?

They do have enough to support it with all their fees they have enough reserves in fiat funds to have enough people cashing out am sure if people continue on the down trend and more gets changed out and becomes problems on site then am sure their services will announce if they will have a problem in supporting $ cash out. They make enough of fees to cover a fair chunk of it then reserves etc. Who knows BTC might be getting MTGOXED and their cashing out their coins from remote random places. Think about it if they got coin in the massive amounts and they go though washer to mane new coins liek the new ICO where coins where shown going into it am sure this could even be a result of that or some serious players among small players and other fields cashing out too.

Nah, we don't even know who owns some of them or even where they're locations.  Bitcoin's "infrastructure" is a fun mix of neckbeards from mom's basement & totally legit d00ds from the internet.
