This will have serious consequences to anyone in France trying to set up a business using bitcoins. Anyone doing so will have to get Mark's wife's permission (which will no doubt only be granted if you give her a load of cash). French trademark law is very strict, and it has been responsible for a lot of products being banned for sale in the country.

Mt:Gox - The Paypal of the Bitcoin(tm) world. Regulating, controlling, owning.

I can't wait until day Mark's house of cards comes crashing down. He is everything that many bitcoiners despise, or at least should despise. He is the epitome of everything that is wrong in the capitalist financial world.

Please re-read the original post.  The lawyer Michael Pascazi and his wife have copyrighted "Bitcoin" in order to make money off of other people's work.  Mark, the owner of MtGox, is the one fighting against this.

Trademarked.  Not copyrighted.

Oops, thanks =)

Sorry, I completely misread. I blame the red wine.

I take it all back.

No problem, glad to hear that it was an honest mistake.

Patent/trademark trolling is nothing new. Ballmer still holds patents for the first interweb browser, he's continually tried to sue Android devs/Google/Samsung and everybody he can with little success. Nobody's copyrighted cryptocurrency yet...? Get satoshi on that

Ballmer even tried to sue everybody using the term linux as he claims Novell Linux is the only legal distro.

Doesnt matter. Its first come first served,no matter how long its been around.

Depends on the country. In some countries you common law rights, in others you dont. Ive no idea about France.

Bitcoin isn't a commodity or a currency. If so, I would like to buy a kilo.

What if bitcoin is declared illegal? What do they do to you if you own a trademark on that ?

 Cheesy

There is no way to make Bitcoin illegal, Bitcoin is a network of p2p, a commodity with value only because of the demand for it's supply and what people are willing to pay for it.

This guy didn't copyright bitcoin, he copyrighted the word bitcoin. He lays claim in France to anyone using the word bitcoin in their business. I'm excited to see how this holds up,

I kinda want to incorporate 'Bitcoin, Inc.' in France and have him try and take me to court, just so I can set the precedent and use the case to argue a wrongful copyright claim in court. The fact that Gox has been fighting French courts over Bitcoin use actually helps our case.

If you look deep enough, you will see it's a currency of electric signal patterns magically becoming commodity in a stored form  Grin

Well its an electric currentcy.

You do not want to screw up in France, if they decide to arrest him for whatever reason, he will wish he had never been born.

Ummm,

I wonder what this could potentially do to both him and the court case (Gox vs bank) in France. Unless my memory is totally screwed there are heavy duty penalties for "misleading public offices" in France.

It would be hilarious if this were filed later than the initial filings in the court case Grin
