Would love to bring this to my area but unfortunately there's zero interest and coverage about bitcoins here. You can't find word about it even on the biggest forums.

 Huh What area is that?

How would they take care of double spend for BTC->fiat conversion? I hardly imagine they would ask you to hang around for 10 minutes waiting for 1 confirmation.

Good question.

I have written them so many times about licensing and they never responded, not once. That said, I will not be impressed at a machine that "takes bitcoin" and "dispenses cash". That's not particularly amazing. What will be amazing is making a machine that you can park somewhere and it wont get totally pawned by hackers. Building ATMS seems like something ATM building companies should be left to do. If it's real, I'm interested but I'd be concerned about security.

It does both. It takes bitcoins or cash and dispenses cash or bitcoins. Why is that not impressive? It's so much more convenient than, for example, BitInstant (if there is an ATM near you).

Also, I did write to them about licensing and they did respond. *shrugs*

On March 25, 2013, Canadian media and technology entrepreneur, Jeff Berwick, announced the completion of the world’s first BitcoinATM machine and announced it would soon take it to market.

Today, just over one month later, BitcoinATM is announcing its grand inauguration and launch press conference and reception.  BitcoinATM will be unveiling its G6000 BitcoinATM at the Hotel Del Coronado in the Yorke Room in San Diego, CA on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 1pm.
The machine will be displayed and presented as fully functional for both cash in and cash out capabilities with a real time presentation showing the funds flowing into or out of bitcoin wallets.

The company garnered much media attention over the past month with its plans to bring Bitcoin to mainstreet with its ATM, which, unlike traditional ATM’s, features cash-in and cash-out capabilities for users looking to either buy bitcoins or sell bitcoins.
Cementing itself among the forefront of Bitcoin startups, BitcoinATM maintains its plan to place an ATM in Cyprus, as well as throughout the Americas and the world.

Since announcing its technology, the company has received franchisee inquiries from 300  groups in over 30 countries spanning every continent on the globe except Antarctica.  BitcoinATM is also in the process of closing a first round of fundraising expected to be in the $1-3 million range to handle growth and demand.

There is a limited number of space available for the afternoon gathering and a large amount of interest, so BitcoinATM asks all media and interested parties to send the company an e-mail to RSVP to [email protected].
For more information on BitcoinATM you can go to www.bitcoinatm.com.

Apart from this forum, I've not seen this anywhere else. Can't see why someone would fake it though?

A lot of people "involved" with Bitcoin seem to be more focused on getting people to look at their face, than actually getting shit done.

here, here.

where is our system of decentralized exchanges? or an easy, noncontroversial solution to blockchain bloat?, etc

I heard that today is the opening debut of Jeff Berwick's BitcoinATM. Will it happen? If it does, what will happen to the price... speculate!

Where did you hear that today was the day?  You'd think the website would have a countdown to launch!

I know right? Well in several of the interviews Jeff Berwick said there would be a debut in San Diego "next week". Also, my memory (perhaps faulty!) is telling me that he said "Friday next week" in one of the interviews. I'm in suspense! For some reason I think a live demonstration of a working commercial-grade ATM would be huge for bitcoin (I realize a small prototype was demonstrated already).

On DollarVigilante the last video is from 18th April.  There he says San Diego is likely to pip Cyrpus to the punch due to "logistics", and puts a time frame of "the enxt 2 weeks"...so it could well be next week.   As long as the ATM functions well and is well publicised (I'm guessing it will be heavily covered in the media) then I think this could send us to a new all time high.  Followed by a significant correction, rather than a comeplete crash.

I'm not sure what the comments here are about. The BitcoinATM seems like a really exciting project that required a lot of work. Anyway, looking forward to the public opening.
