Know what's gonna suck when the world freaks out and zombies arrive?  With people not alive to maintain internet networks, bitcoin will die and even if the internet does maintain for a while, and some groups of people survive, you will find damn few people who will care about anything bitcoin related at that point.

Just keeping it in perspective.........

I think we have bigger issues than bitcoin if that scenario unfolds, but yes, it won't be of much use, you are correct.

I'm not expert, but I think you'd still be able to send bitcoin using carrier pigeons.

Using the protocol defined in RFC 1149?

We should probably save our Electrum seeds in the Doomsday vault for the future - just in case.

This will be the last thing i would be thinking of doing when there are zombies trying to eat you, that will be game set and nearly match in the stated scenario and we would not give a bleep about bitcoin and those who did would quickly die. Find safe shelter, guns perishable food and a water filter/source. Nothing else matters not even our beloved bitcoin Sad Lets see what the future holds ;0)

In case of a zombie apocalypse people would tattoo their private keys on their bodies. If they die or survive, or the modern society is rebuilt, they can have their funds back. If not, they got a cool tattoo anyway.  Tongue

Don't worry if zombie apocalypse happens just keep your coins in a cold wallet and you'll be fine. You won't need the coins immediately as many of the shops could temporarily close at that point, and after the apocalypse you just import your private keys and good to go as today. And those new satellites will confirm the transactions don't worry  Wink

Who is not to say that Zombies won't end up using bitcoin at some point. Maybe some smart zombie will form and they will need to have a smart economy. So they will use bitcoin.

Just a theory.

if the internet ceases to exist , life will no longer be worth living ...

in all seriousness though , it would take an apocalyptic event to knock out the global internet / cause enough chaos that society breaks down ... possible scenarios that would likely do enough damage include massive solar flare , EMP/thermonuclear war , extinction level asteroid impact , alien invasion , viral pandemic event aka zombie apocalypse , and of course the most likely and my personal favorite - the end of the oil based global economy combined with all of antarctica and greenland falling into the oceans and submerging 80% of the human population areas within the next 50 years ... glad i like hiking and know how to swim ...

What about the giant supervolcano beneath yellowstone park in the USA erupting? It's been estimated it would destroy half the USA and block all sunlight out worldwide for years. No food will grow without sunlight and the survivors will mostly starve to death.

Nah...aquaponics ;p

You mean ... REAL zombies??? Isn't "zombie apocalypse" just a name of a scenario about people in the US starting a revolution?

If THAT would occur we are good with Bitcoin I think.

Why would that be? None of the previous revolutions in the world have been related to “zombies”. Why would this one be?

We don't really need zombie apocalypse to feel how bitcoin can be useless and totally worthless. Just leave your big city. And travel somewhere where internet is not present and even electricity is scarcity.
Then you will understand that bitcoin is just currency for the high developed societies. Any kind of natural disaster, war or other abnormal events are the end of bitcoin as we know it.

if an apocalypse was to happen, the internet, bitcoin, bank notes, gold, metal coins, stamps, MTV, blue-ray, LED-tv's would be the least of our worries

Exactly. How do people not see this? We had similar threads but about a World War, EMP, Solar Flare and whatnot. In most of these scenarios, everything that is worth a lot today, would be worthless.
Who would want to buy diamonds when an army is marching toward your house?

Wasn't there some project that was supposed to launch (or has launched) nodes into the Earth's Orbit?

I think a more likely event to destroy BTC could be this : http://www.express.co.uk/news/nature/494438/End-of-world-alert-solar-flares-destroy-earth-scientists-warn

A huge solar flare will cause huge damage and even some smaller EMP's will destroy everything electronic.

I watch "Doomsday Preppers" and I also think BTC would be the least of our problems when a catastrophic event occur.  Sad Sad

If there was a zombie apocalypse I would not really care about bitcoin unless it became the currency of choice due to lack of government but that is unlikely because of the factors you mentioned earlier.
