I also don't know why he wait 3 years, he should try a mixer before. But indeed most of exchanges has been hacked and people lose money but on Binance people not was affected because exchange covered the stolen coins. I have hardware wallets and never had any problem.

Why he waited this 3 years long time? did he lose his wallet? I don't think he waited to hide the transaction! Because he has enough knowledge about the blockchain transparency! Every major exchange has a hack story! Every year, exchanges are feeding billions of USD to the hackers, every time we keep telling not to store coins on exchange! But some people are too lazy to move the fund every day or one day a week! From Binance to huobi, no exchange is safe! Everyone should earn and spend 100 USD to buy a hardware wallet because hardware wallets are safer than any kind of wallets!

It seems there is another movement of the said hacked Bitcoin, an article were published the other day titled : Stolen Bitfinex BTC Is on the Move on Coindesk.  It was assume that the move was connected to with the Bitfinex's LEO token.
Quote
Hard Fork posited that the move was connected with Bitfinex’s Leo token, which allows for the anonymous return of stolen funds

Though this allegation were denied by Bitfinex spokesperson Anneka Dew and said that they were not involved on the move.

Quote from: Anneka Dew
“We are not involved, and the movement is not tied to the procedure outlined in the UNUS SED LEO white paper,”

Well, if it is proven that Bitfinex have something to do with the movement of the fund, then this will be very  interesting story.

Glad someone is actually watching these wallets to make sure hackers that have been found culprit of hacking are to bring to book in the future. Funny enough they think they were going to spend the money without anybody's notice. These days i am glad most OTCs actually enforce the performance of KYC. i know we would apprehend them in no time.

It's true that we shouldn't trust or leave any fund in the exchange not because they're going to run with the funds but they're always vulnerable to hackers. On the other hand I'm getting curious about this... what if they use a bitcoin mixer to transfer the funds? We all know that it's a big amount of bitcoin right? But what if they transfer it partially? Do you think it will be still traceable to discover where the bitcoins are?

Or maybe that's what they did.

What if they donated the funds to streamers that they know? or to themselves, what if they used a mixer and started sending the funds to random addresses, how would we be able to tell if a random person just got some bitcoin and used it or if it was the hacker? You going to interrogate every person that gets some of those?

This is one of the reasons why I like blockchain network. Due to the transparent nature of this amazing technology, such activities can easily be monitored. Maybe we still need more security measures to get hold of such unsrupolous individuals. I guess that can happen in the very near future.

No matter how old is the hacking incident, we can still trace their transactions. They thought people already forgot such incident and no one is bothering to look at it at the moment. Unfortunately, it is so easy to check in this digital age with several blockchain services already at hand.
It may be easy to follow what they're doing, but I think that it's unlikely we'll know their names or anything since there's still a lot of ways they can hide their identity from everyone and still get away with the money. At least, money that isn't Bitcoin. There's probably an exchange for some good or service happening, or they found a buyer and are dumping the coins to them at a reduced price. Maybe they'll get thrown through a mixer and then it'll be really difficult to find out where it's all gone.

It's good that the blockchain exists so we can ID transactions like this one, but I don't know how much it will matter. I guess everyone's waiting for a slip-up, or just watching the transactions unfold.

Buy, sell and store real cryptocurrencies
Do they have to wait up to three years to move the bitcoin to the new address? Why don't they sell bitcoin when it costs $ 20k? I feel there are too many strange things.
And if we now discover addresses that hold hackers' bitcoin. What can we do to prevent hackers from selling that bitcoin into fiat? I really don't feel confident with bitfinex, everything around them is shady.

I agree completely with you. The ATH would have been a perfect opportunity to dump and cash in but nope. Something else just have been responsible. Definitely they will know the wallets are being tracked that's why they moved BTC to new wallets.

Since BTC is only used by the owner and only the hacker has access to the wallet, there's no way they can be caught. Let's hope the hacks reduces.

Now this is where CipherTrace could prove its usefulness into knowing where would the coins end up and link them to a personality or a service. They weren't so smart at all to have waited that long and move it as nothing even changed at all since the transaction is still broadcasted over the whole bitcoin network. I hope bitfinex would watch closely on the development of this case if ever they're really sincere in pursuing justice.

This explains the $300 or so dump in price overnight.

Could be the reason, hackers would have patiently waited for the market to recover and reach 5400$ before moving the funds they have stolen. That's why I never leave my funds in a trading platform even how safe and secured they say it is. Move your funds to somewhere secured (hardware wallet) as soon as you are done trading.

This should be really a warning to people that likes to save or put their investments or crypto currencies on exchanges. I know that these exchanges or trading sites are doing their best to secure your cryptos but we all know how hackers can be so smart and can still get through their securities. I know that it is hard but we should be able to take care of our investments, it is also for our own good.

I wonder why they should wait for three years while the hacker could move it step by step. No matter how long they wait but if they move it in a bunch then it will be easily tracked imho. Just wondering why they did not move it when bitcoin reached its ATH at then end of 2017 as they should have made so huge amount of money.

Immediately after a hack everyone is watching closely, so no point moving the coins. Then after a while people forget and move onto the next thing.

The only reason the move was spotted is because someone on reddit had the address on a watch list and three years on, were still in the crypto space and still watching - and caught the move.

https://www.newsbtc.com/2019/04/25/hacked-bitcoin-moves-300-of-bitfinex-users-btc-moves-for-the-first-time/

Quote
Around 300 of the Bitcoin that were never recovered following a hack of the crypto exchange Bitfinex have moved today. The hack in the summer of 2016 cost the company $73 million at the time.

The coins appear to have been moved to a total of 13 new addresses. It is the first time the coins have ever moved to new wallets, none of which have any previous transaction history.

I guess the hackers waited three years hoping that no-one would notice the movement - but with a public ledger people are always watching.
But how dos the hacker care about noticing the transfer or the movements of the said amount?because of the anonymity i think he cannot be catched

This is another reminder to people not to leave coins on exchanges. Practically every single exchange out there has been hacked at some point.
Agreed, only transfer our coins when we need to trade and must take it again every after trading for our own safeties and for preventing from being part of hacking victims

That's because these exchanges do nothing to help the users recover the money once they get hacked and hence we should abandon these exchanges that don't believe in reimbursing the money. They need to be as secure as banks and infact even more as they get the license to operate and are legal entities and also earn too much from listing coins and from fees. There is no reason why they can't be secure. Just checking the net worth of Binance and it is $1.4 Billion and that of HDFC is $2.4 billion. These exchanges don't even pay interest to customers and hence what's their excuse?

Bitfinex is now being considered a fraudulent exchange and is under investigation. Serves them right.
