This illegal exchanger (https://www.bitfinex.com/) is hacked.  120K BTC was stolen(aprox 60 mil USD) !

http://www.coindesk.com/bitfinex-shuts-down-customer-bitcoin-stolen/

It's so funny when they write "The theft is being reported to — and we are co-operating with — law enforcement."   What law enforcement when YOU are running an  illegal forex company(without licenses) ?!?!  Grin

They are liars and morons...

No theft would co operate with law officials so they have to serve more time or pay any fines after returning the bitcoin back, which is probably impossible because it is being sent to multiple wallets so it can not be traced back to where they actually came from.

Guys I've found some slack group they are preparing some kind of petition, you can find them here - bitpetition.herokuapp.com

Quote
We, the undersigned customers as the main creditors of the cryptocurrency trading platform bitfinex.com, demand to immediately provide all the information about the state of affairs on the exchange.
Also, we strongly expect bitfinex.com to present the confirmation of the damage, and the conditions and timetable for the return of customer funds. We require that this process and all the actions of the platform were open and transparent.
We are willing to contribute in any possible way to recover the funds and hope for the best resolution for all parties. However, in case of failure to meet these demands, we will file a class action lawsuit against bitfinex.com.

Sounds reasonable to me
that's your right to get your money back so this action definitely needed

Sounds like denial, anger and bargaining all rolled into one.

You can file lawsuits but once a company enters bankruptcy lawsuits are usually discharged and everybody gets in line together. That's the whole purpose of bankruptcy protection.

Ps- It is often the threat of lawsuits that forces a company into bankruptcy.

what's the alternative for BFX's clients? waiting for Bitfinex to empty the bank accounts?

what would you do if you would have let's say 100k USD or 500K USD with them? Smiley

but there are people with millions... of course, part them will hire some guys to "fix" the issue. they will not wait for lawsuits. it's about A LOT of money not peanuts and not everybody is patient  Smiley

Then it is clear from such problems with bitcoin. That's only if a market has failed, why not keep the other course?

Bitcoin recovering rapidly. Nothing can beat BTC.

Pretty much, the market will always react negatively to stuff like this. There will usually always be a recovery too though.

I just feel bad for people who have lost a lot of money.

Update - As it stands, we are continuing to investigate the hack and cooperating with authorities and the top blockchain analytic companies in the space to track the stolen bitcoins. In the meantime, we have been working on getting the platform up and running on a secure instance so that users can log in and see if their accounts have been affected as well as the state of their positions and orders. We hope to have an update with more substance later today UTC time.

Let's face it, none of these "exchanges" are secure, because they are run by people. People are greedy, it is nature. Most people have figured out by now that these companies don't get "hacked", they get a greedy employee or even owner who decides that they stand to gain far more than they can possibly lose when the average law officer barely knows how to use a keyboard let alone mine Bitcoin transaction data. And so we see the same pattern repeat itself; missing BTC, weeks offline, suddenly the owners disappear into a wall of a shame, yeah right - in the Caribbean somewhere. That's why the price tanks, because so long after Mtgox people are still relying on centralized exchanges where this happens time and time again. These "hacks" tend to come in waves also, as all great thieves realise that any diversion is an opportunity, so having your BTC on any exchange right now is folly.

I fully agree

A bit of internet shame Vs many many millions and a luxury lifestyle until your dying day...

Difficult choice eh...

I would guess that everyone else is trying to figure out what exactly happened. Based on their public statements, they do not know how the attacker was able to gain access to both the "hot" signing key and access to BitGo (and get around the signing restrictions that they had with BitGo).

It's been said a lot but probably not enough -

NEVER KEEP ANY SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF BTC AT AN EXCHANGE

Now it seems to be NO Exchanges can trust

You see, this is the stupid part.  If there is need for trust, then you are not using bitcoin correctly.

What if the owners themselves orchestrated all this thing? They've got a database of +119kBTC. That meant over $70m at the time of the theft. How hard is it to orchestrate this? Just pretend a hacker stole all BTC from your website, send the +119kBTC funds to your secondary wallet, make a fake page saying that 'they're trying to investigate this' while the owners are laughing behind the scenes, with tens of millions. As laws do not exist for BTC.. why not? Perfect method for them.

That's what repeatedly happens with these shady sites that encourage you to maintain a large balance in THEIR wallet. It's happened at least a half-dozen times that I can name off the top of my head.. So it's definitely not out of reality.

It already has made a decent recovery and will be soon where it was. But, it will go back down and up some more times first.

I agree.  I don't see how the markets can forget such a thing just like that.  Surely the real shockwaves haven't even begun yet!

those with millions of USD in Bitfinex didn't wake up yet. the miners who exchange through them and many, many others are still in stand by...

let's not forget the Bitfinex has a LOT of money in their bank accounts too. Smiley

I am just thinking though. What would be the first reaction of those people when they wake up broke.
Maybe they got a lot of money but this is also a lot we are talking about.

You're right, they haven't. It hasn't hit the major media yet. There's a whole new generation of people now that won't touch Bitcoin with a 10 foot pole.

It's either that or a hacker really stole the coins. I'm leaning towards the former, so much easier for inside job to be done than a hacker. Unless bitfinex can provide a proof that hacker really did this.

I think if there's actually a hacker who commits theft all bitcoin owned by bitfinex then they will certainly provide an explanation with details of the assault, the chronology problem and I think it is clear the error bitfinex because they don't do special safeguards for all the data they have and the bitfinex is obliged to pay all the losses felt by all users.

The timing on this is crazy suspicious. I'd be remiss to say what I'm thinking, but this is very interesting, and a great time (with caution) to buy btc. You know how it takes ages for the market to finish reacting to bad news, people don't find out they are broke until days after the theft in btc land.

Smells like hash ocean. But, heads will roll over there, so this has shades of legit. Prayers for anyone that lost significant value in this.
