I agree with 1984 and Brave New World and also suggest Animal Farm by George Orwell and Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

"The Rational Optimist" by Matt Ridley was one of my life-changers.

I can double-up the recommendation of 1984.

Here's another book thread from where you probably can find few ideas: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=22955.0

You had Orwell's Nineteen-eighty-four already there. I didn't like it much, although it is a definite must-read. Another must-read in the same genre is Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Well, that was an interesting book...

FIAT LIBERTAS RVAT CAELVM
Well, Now I HAVE to write 1884 as a Steampunk version of 1984, so.. yes, do read that when I'm done.

In the meantime, let me reiterate my suggestion of Alongside Night. (a google search, or clicking the link I posted in the other book thread will get you a free PDF copy)

Um...Orwell's book was 1984, not 1884 :p

Having lurked in your threads I find myself entirely ill equipped and my ignorance outright embarrasses me within this field and so onto my request or should I say plea.

I only ask you to suggest a book that I should read and if it please you feel free to give a little explanation or in deed a long one.

The ones most mentioned I shall read first and I shall keep the list below updated.

Books I should go out and read:

1984, George Orwell  x 4
( This was a single number response to a thread of mine and I thank you pinjas) Wink

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World x 3

Alongside Night, J. Neil Schulman x 2
http://www.alongsidenight.net/

The Rational Optimist, Matt Ridley x 1

Boundaries of Order, Butler Schafer x 1
http://mises.org/books/boundaries.pdf

Animal Farm, George Orwell x 1

Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury x 1

The Creature from Jekyl Island

Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell

Anthem - Ayn Rand

Agrarian Justice - Thomas Paine

The Road to Serfdom - Friedrich A. Hayek

Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt

Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar - James Marcus Bach

1984 Steampunk version, myrkul (Realise  date unknown) Cool

I'm sure I am not alone and I hope this thread will enlighten others as I hope it to enlighten myself.

Having  finished writing this on word  and on  account of my irritating dyslexia  It  took me considerably more effort than is proportional to the task and as I prepared to cut and paste what do I find but a similar thread right at the top. Undecided

I’m going to post it anyway and let it die if it must but I will take responsibility of maintaining the list that I promise you.
