"GoFundMe charges a flat fee of 5% on all donations collected. That means GoFundMe has already made $7,500 profit off of this tragedy. "

That is outright disgusting.

+ 2, Donations such as this should not be able to take such a stupid fee! Infact, they probally should ask people to make a donation to them to keep the service up and running!

Very much so and why we should act.

Oh and it's currently $16,936.80 in profits.

What a sales pitch...

6. Will GoFundMe charge me any fees?

GoFundMe will automatically deduct a 5% fee from each donation you receive. If you don't receive any donations, then you won't pay anything at all.

Since our fee is deducted from each donation in real-time, you'll never need to worry about getting billed or owing us any money. Your donors are NEVER charged fees.

Remember, GoFundMe is the BEST fundraising solution available and all those extra donations you collect should more than make up for the fee.

7. How are payments processed?

US Customers: A WePay account is automatically created for you inside of GoFundMe during the sign up process. WePay charges a fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (exactly the same as PayPal).

International Customers: You'll be ask to connect or create a PayPal account inside of GoFundMe during the sign up process. PayPal charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

Leave a wall post informing them of better alternatives such as bitcoin.

Anyone know a secure bitcoin fund raising platform? We should have one for cases like this or any international crisis.

Who needs a platform when all you need to do is post a bitcoin address?

I think they would prefer a website to process all their funds for them although now they are just asking for bank deposits...in Canada.

Their facebook could use some more posts from any users here who feel bitcoin is better than paypal or should at least be an added option for people to help out.

If enough people contact the family I don't see why they would not set it up. Let me know when you guys hear back from them. I haven't heard anything yet.
I don't think it's wise to bombard the family about setting up a bitcoin account. One message is enough, they have other things to think about.

Umm the family was complaining openly about not having a payment service that charges less than 5% and there are dozens of posts from people recommending paypal on their wall and nothing mentioning bitcoins. Yeah they need to be made aware of it and getting one message out of 1,000's won't make any impact.

I will be happy to donate generously as soon as Bitcoin is accepted. See, I want to donate directly to the victims, not to f*cking paypal or GoFundMe or credit card companies or all the other shitty middle men involved.

One thing that I have done in cases like this is to contact the company directly and ask them to either wave or reduce their fee.  Don't talk to a customer service rep - ask for management.  A lot of times they will do it as they can write off the loss anyway.  If they won't, find one that will.
