BRANDON FIGUEROA shows superb performance, I did not expect to be this fight to be an exciting one but both fighters are not hesitant to engage, this is the kind of boxing that we want to see, even if the fighters are not very popular, Nery was overwhelmed by the too many punches thrown by Figueroa, in the end, it was the body punch that did it.
Style really makes a fight if two slugger clashes expect something like this to happen.

During the weigh-in interview, they promised that their fight would not be boring as it would be a war and indeed it's an explosive fight from the get go.

Though they are not popular to people living in Asia but i think people in the US or Mexico are following these boxers and personally i'm following also Nery as his name popped up as a future opponent of Casimero or Magsayo.

Brandon's next fight is against Fulton for a unification fight and that would be another exciting fight as i think Brandon is a boxer that people in the US want to see, a brawler not a runner.

Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everybody who shared their opinions on this fight.

Time to lock the thread now.

When I have seen the fight it was intense that both fighters keep on exchanging punches and never back down but Nery didn't really knockdown Figueroa it was really a push that outbalanced Figueroa but eventually both fighters keeps on trading punches until Brandon Figueroa hit the ribs of Luis Nery that hurts him and take him down the canvas,

As they promised, they are going to go to war, which eventually did. But Figueroa is the heavy handed on the two and this body shot to the flexor, anyone will really go down like that.

It was really intense for both fighters Brandon Figueroa really was putting a great performance his punches were always going in you can say that Figueroa has the accuracy in his punches.

He was the underdog as far as the odds, didn't bet on this match. but for sure for those who throw a bit of money on him, its a worth the risk. Not sure if Figueroa can still go down this weight class down. He is tall and his body will have a hard time. He needs to go up one weight class and fight another champion. Because he has the accuracy and has power.

It was not a masterful performance but Figueroa managed to pull off the upset. I thought Nery was winning the fight but then he ran out of gas and was taken out with body punches.

I don't know what the ceiling is for Figueroa. He has really good cardio but he takes too many punches and a more technical fighter would be able to outbox him. Eventually he is going to run into somebody that will knock him out cold or will shut him out in the scorecards.

Is he tough or Nery just lack the power to put to sleep Figueroa?

I agree, if he runs into a technical fighter that can move around more and box then he will have a problem.

But for now, let us just congratulate him on this win.

Another loss for me but no regret as the fight lives to its expectation and a fight like this just saves the sports from those circuses that some clowns are doing.

I got the correct rounds and did see how the fight will turn out, but it was Nery who got knock out with the body shot and not Figueroa. I agree though, I didn't see the power in Nery's punch, he just touches Brandon with volume as you can see onto Brandon face.

And again, as I have said, Figueroa doesn't have a good defense, likes to fight inside although he is the taller guy. And this might give him a problem if he fights a technical boxer.

Brandon Figueroa is the new WBC and WBA unified super bantamweight champion, is this an UPSET?

Damn, what a fight. Brandon is one tough boxer. He was tagged with power punches in the early rounds and yet no effects on him and Nery does not hurt him.

I just find it awkward for Brandon to not use his height advantage on his smaller opponents.

Anyway, congrats to Brandon Figueroa and looking forward to his next fight.

So the bigger purse for Brandon is just right here, at least he proved that he is deserving to receive the much bigger percentage of this fight. But sportsbooks got it wrong this time. They thought Nery had advantage over Brandon. At least, we watched real boxing fight here, not an exhibition fight.

^^ He should as he is the favorite against Brandon. He knows that stakes, this is a unification bout. And he should forget about the purse, they have accepted it even if if it set against them.

And if ever he wins, it will be sweeter as he proved them wrong for giving and short changing him in this fight. For sure he will be the A-side next time around if he conquers Figueroa in a spectacular fashion.

Just came across an interesting article where in they put public boxers' purse and Brandon Figueroa will receive much more than Luis Nery.

I thought that Nery is the "A" side on this fight but why he is receiving amount which is much lower than Brandon?

Quote
Per California State Athletic commission, official contract purses for Saturday’s PBC/Showtime card: Luis Nery $250k, Brandon Figueroa $650k; Daniel Roman $100k, Ricardo Espinoza $27k; Xavier Martinez $60k, Juan Carlos Burgos $20k; Jose Valenzuela $8k, Nelson Hampton $8k; Gabriela Fundora $800, Jazmin Valverde $800; Justin Cardona $4k, James De Herrera $3,500.

Nevertheless, i'm locked on betting for Nery via decision for that 3.10 odds.

This is actually kind of shocking. Figueroa isn't remotely close to a big enough draw to justify paying him that much money. Since the fight is on a premium channel not many people will see it. Over $1 million is purses and the B side is getting the majority of it. Nery is definitely getting ripped off. It's also shocking to see undercard fighters only getting $800. After paying their trainers, managers, and other expenses they are left with nothing.

Nery should win on this fight. that's a ripped off also in my opinion. from sportsbooks like stake, they are favouring nery to win on this fight with odds of 1.47 vs 2.65. few hours and we will see the fight happening.
undercard fighters also are being underpaid. nothing is left when they paid those people around him. i didnt know that they are paying this low to some undercard fighters, not even $1k.

So here's the official weigh-in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nxw0TYYpvM

Move to 13:30 to see them. Both look drain, but we all know that they are going to rehydrate after this.

@FinneysTrueVision - yeah it was a rip-off, probably the PED allegations really haunted Nery here that's why he is getting less than expected.

^^ I can speculate that Figueroa is the US based (although Mexican by heritage), that's why he will got more money in this fight. And probably they are building him up too to be the next face of boxing. So this is really going to be a interesting match-up as Brandon is the underdog. And he promises an all out Mexican war with Luis Nery.

Right, this could be the main reason, although Nery is the favourite and should be getting the lion's share in this fight, but if you look closer, Brandon seems to be the well-known between the two that's why he is getting like 60-40 or 70-30 of the split.

And so this might motivate Nery though, he accepted knowing that he will be getting less, but for sure he wanted to prove more here by getting a win against the hype Figueroa.

I had bad thoughts in the boxing fight between Luis Nery vs. Brandon Figueroa, however, it seems special, one is an old player and one is a new star, This is a good opportunity to place a bet, of course it's a huge loss to miss for boxing fans, of course Luis Nery and Brandon have their respective skills even though Brandon is relatively new to the boxing championship this time.

I watched that time one year passed between Nery vs. Aaron Alameda, Aaron had bad luck at that time, is it possible that Nery did the same thing as happened in the past year to Aaron.

I grasp very tightly what: Neri said.

You beat me to it mate,  Smiley but I will try to break down the fight to the best of my knowledge.

The thing with Figueroa is that he is tall but doesn't use and take advantage of it. He has a poor defense and Nery will touch that face of his with upper cuts and then break Figueroa with body shots. It will be competitive 1-3 rounds, they will fight inside (hence negating Figueroa's height and reach advantage). I think Nery will win here by KO/TKO probably inside 7-9 rounds.
I'm sure that Figueroas trainer is aware of him not using his height and reach advantage in past fights to his advantage and has been working on changing that. The guy is 21-0-1 so not as if he is a terrible fighter.

That's also a big possibility, but we all know that when a fighter got hit in the mouth in the first round, they suddenly wanted to return the favour and become offensive minded and go back to where they used to fight. Hatton vs Pacquiao for example, when Hatton tasted Manny's power, that "right hook roll under' strategy was thrown out of the window and never implemented, (I'm sure majority here saw that video in Youtube). And I'm sure they are working on changing that, but it will be a difficult thing to implement specially against an aggressive Nery who is also a a volume puncher. So this is fire for fire, all brawl fight in my opinion.

Luis Nery used to be a really promising prospect but then he failed a PED test and weight issues and his career has never really recovered. He worked with Freddy Roach for a few weeks then he switched to Canelo's trainer, Eddy Reynoso, but he left him also. You can not have that much instability and still be a great fighter. I still think he is good enough to beat Figueroa, who will be fighting the first dangerous opponent of his lackluster career.

I'm not aware of this PED issue with Nery so thanks for digging this one. I don't know why he left Eddy Reynoso, the best trainer right now, perhaps it was due to the fact that he has a lot of boxers under his wing and felt that Nery wouldn't have the time he needed with Eddy.

But yes, he can still fight and move on and hire another trainer and beat Figueroa here as he is the favourite in this fight.

This is basically a comeback fight for Nery and a rise to stardom fight for Figueroa. That PED test is pretty problematic for me to decide as to who I am going to bet on because I don't find Figueroa that strong, maybe I will let this one slide.
