I would like to see heavyweight boxing become more popular again but the sport lacks any true stars like Mike Tyson or Evander Holyfield.  At least Mayweather helped keep boxing alive with his perfect record but boxing isn't even close in popularity compared to what it was 20-30 years ago.  Now it seems to mostly be about UFC.

OP should change the title of this thread.

Matthyse vs Pacquiao's over as the discussion keeps on going and change it probably to "Boxing discussion".
Was supposed to say the same thing earlier but i completely forgot yet the fight is already over and theres nothing to talk about this matter anymore.
Thanks for noticing that as well, if someone can create a new thread for the continuation of the discussion but if OP will notice this and change the title.

That's better.

Another interesting note regarding Manny. His (former) manager, Bob Arum is in Manila. I was quite surprised to read the news. Maybe Arum is cooking something for Manny:

Quote
Arum Arrives in The Philippines To Meet With Manny Pacquiao

According to several reports in the Philippines, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has arrived to General Santos City for a face to face meeting with eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

Arum is going to talk with Pacquiao regarding his boxing future and obviously to promote his next fight.

https://www.boxingscene.com/arum-arrives-philippines-meet-with-manny-pacquiao--130772

Are you looking perhaps for another big money fight for Manny in the US then? Is Bob convinced that Manny has it and the still has the potential to bring people to watch him again in the US?

If I'm in the shoes of Manny. I wouldn't get myself involved with Uncle Bob. Arum already milked Pacquiao and its time for him to make his stance about that. He don't need money fights anymore, yes he can still pull the trigger but it doesn't mean he needs to go on and fight. Nothing for Manny to proved and don't let Arum ruined him before he hang up his gloves.
If Arum is on Philippines to meet manny then theres no doubt that he would really have that motive which he would definitely offer partnerships once again and as you said i dont even see a reason for manny to receive such offer after all these years of milking he can able to stand on his own without any tie-ups but well its still his own decision if he would welcome but for me its too late yet hes already near on the retirement.

Weird though. Why would Arum not be in the side of Manny when he fought Mattysse? That old fart is up to something again and he has the nerves to travel to The Philippines and personally talk to Pacquiao. I sense something in here that it will not favor Pacquiao or even Buboy. That bastard is so f**** greedy, he has the next cash cow already, Terrence Crawford. Is he trying to setup Manny with Crawford then? So that Crawford can sort of carry the torch for Top Rank and legitimize himself as the true and next cash cow? Really wise Arum!!!
Anything for money that greedy old man would really make his face thick and wont really be ashamed to visit on manny's homeland even though people do already saw on whats the possible purpose he do have on his visit.

OP should change the title of this thread.

Last post was July 26 and then bumped today Undecided

Fine in my own view if it's still about the topic but this thread is now getting lots of off-topic discussions. Just look at the recent replies here. The fight was over for half a month now.

OP you must closed this thread now or for other users please don't bumped this anymore.

Manny looked pretty sharp and explosive, good stamina until the end. This makes the dream fight of Pac vs Loma closer. Of course Pac at 135 will have extra difficulties and Loma is just at his peak... too difficult.. but imagine the clusterfuck in boxing world if he pulls a win, would be a perfect retirement match.
Pac vs Crawford also ideal retirement match if he can end Crawfords undefeated record. Floyd rated him the best p2p currently.

It has to be one of these two. I don't want to see a Horn rematch if it has to be the last Pac fight.
I don't think Pacman vs Lomachengko is going to happen. Lomachenko's terms if fight will happen is no catch weight. We all know that Manny's last fights are mostly on catch weight. That's why for the past few years, he never had a good knock down because the challenger is usually bigger and can fight with his weight class.

Just an update about Lucas Matthysse, after his TKO loss on the 7th round with Manny Pacquiao last July 15 at Kuala Lumpur, the former WBA welterweight champion announced that after 11 years of professional boxing, he is hanging the gloves. Lucas Matthysse has a record of 39 wins (36 KOs) and 5 losses.

Pacman won by TKO. He’s now a world champion again. He should have never joined the political world and should have stayed at the boxing ring. At his age, I’m impressed by his performance. Imo, I think he should have retired a long time ago but it looks like he’s still got some energy left. Based from his previous matches, he even got slower as compared to before.
All athletes no matter how good they are need to retire at some point of their career, while I would love to watch Manny fighting forever I prefer that he retires with dignity while he still has some gas left in the tank, also if Manny wants to get in politics that is his decision, I am not from the Philippines but I'm sure he is the most popular athlete there and probably the most known person from that country, so it is likely he has a shot at becoming the president of that country in the future and while many could argue he has no experience the fact that you cannot corrupt him since he is a millionaire already and cares about his country could be enough to do a good job.

Doesn't seem to matter about experience when elections are simply popularity contests. I mean look how many movie stars, actors, athletes or otherwise have gone into government jobs with absolutely no experience. The world is a joke if you really think about it, beat a few people up, become popular and boom, you're a mayoral candidate!

Right.I've known Manny not just a real fighter in the boxing arena, but also a man with a good heart.I know how he had helped those indigent people who come to knock at their houses and went home with some money onhand. So i guess he is born to be a champion in return of all the goodness he had shown to all the helpless people who comes for him to ask an assistance.

The performance put up by Pacquiao was exceptional, if not outright unbelievable. I am not sure whether he will be interested in another bout against Mayweather. But if it happens, then it will be legendary.
A great fight show by two champions around the world but Manny is really a great one. I hears in the news that he will still looking for a fight this year maybe in December but I think its too risky for Manny now to fight considerings its health issues.

I'm guessing it has to do with the obvious fact that there are many Filipino posters here  Cool

The fighting Senator and the Legend of Boxing Manny Pacquiao still have the guts to win a TKO, after 9 years he has still power punch. He now a World Champion again, I think he needs one big fight and win again by TKO and then he must retire after that. Ending a career depending his belt would be a better one.

He's not exactly old... I mean, yes, 39 is relatively old in the sport of boxing, but overall he's not even middle-aged yet. He's still got a few years left in him technically, perhaps even 5-6 years if he's careful. Look at Shannon Briggs, Klitschko etc, these are heavyweights that kept going into their 40s, it should be a lot easier for a welterweight.

Round 3: Matthysse gets dropped! An uppercut did the damage. He’s back to his feet as Pacquiao goes for the finish

Round 5: Matthysse just took a knee after getting hit with a shot on the temple. Second knockdown of the fight and the round ends a second later

Round 7: Pacquiao gets marked up, fires off four more punches in return. Vicious uppercut by Pacquiao. Manny remains the aggressor as Matthysse struggles to land the fight-changing power shots. Pacquiao puts Matthysse down for a third time and that’s it! Manny Pacquiao’s first stoppage win in nine years.

maybe because of his age, but I think Manny Pacquiao still have the energy to fight Cheesy
He isn't too old to retire as long as he can manage his physical and mental strength reserve for 2 to 4 more years he's going to be fine.

2 to 4 years would be a perfect range before Manny could finally retire. He showed us that he still got it despite of the devastating loss and age. I agree with the other comment below that there's something different from the new coaching style from his new coach. I hope to see another good fight from him on his next match
That's perfect for him to retire if all of the remaining fights he had are all wins.

There are fans that aren't noticing the coaching style but his coach was proud enough to win the game and there's a detailed part when he said that their plan worked.

We may haven't noticed that punch but I guess that's the part of what he's talking about the plan.

It was an honor watching him box once again, I've heard that he wants to keep on boxing until he can't box anymore, his performance was likewise not like his past fights wherein he showed the quickness and how agile ans deadly he can be in the ring, its not yet the end for Pacquiao, but again it is good news since I won the bet! Thanks Manny!
Its true, and their fight was good, because Manny gives a great punch to Matthysse, because we know already that Manny have a strong punch. In the third round we cant believe it because Matyhesse get Tko already, so its a good sign that Manny wins over Mattyhsse. He is a great boxer in all so its no wonder that he wins.

Some says that the game was not a real fight. Pacman paid mattysse for sure win but i don’t think that was true. He always give his best to win not for himself and for his family but most importantly for his country. But in my own opinion, he should retire in boxing by now and just enjoy his life with his family and friends and ofcourse with his new career in politics.
I don't think Manny will do that for the victory. Even he will win or lose, he will get money anyways. I think experience made Manny won the match. Can I ask where did you get that hoax??? Pacman won in the game fair and square and he will not do things like that just to win. Win or lose, Manny will be known as one of the best counter puncher in his division. Smiley

I think the OP must change the title of this thread since the fight ended a week ago. Smiley
Why change? I think it’s still valid with what happened and he did really win against Matthysse, fair and square. We don’t know what happens behind the scenes but it could really happen but I doubt it that Manny paid, just doesn’t make sense.

Where did you get that news though? Lucas intentionally took a dive so that Pacman will look good again. Lol. Those people who are spreading this lies are more of a the "other" boxing fans. I don't want to drop names here but those two camps have been in wars for the last decade or so. Anyways I don't believed on such crap, Pacman truly won fair and square in the ring and Lucas did his best but he has faced a Legend.

he is already champion for philippines even win or lose in the fight with matthysse now and for me better for him to retired then focus himself in political because he already prove that he can be a inspiration and have everything in life even he start as a poor person then there so many people help by him already like in the foundation that he build and a lot more so he deserve a peaceful life while he help other
Let him play man, he loves to enter in the ring which is his nature now and he can win against his opponent if he try his best. Political life is also a better choice for him but he may like to keep both alive which is now parts of his life. Either Manny wins or Matthysse this will be an interesting match between these two boxers. Prediction is tough but I will choose Manny as my favorite for this match.

Yes.His last fight had only shown us that he is still capable of becoming a champion in the boxing arena. He still have the energy that we want to witness when he was still younger than his age right now.I think we can still expect more good fights from him.

Guys the original thread about this fight was already closed by it's OP.

For the OP here, the discussions here are now being off topic. Here we go again with the speculations of MP's next fight and the retirement issues.

The fight was almost a week ago so please locked this thread now or refrain now from posting here. My last post here.

maybe because of his age, but I think Manny Pacquiao still have the energy to fight Cheesy

The performance put up by Pacquiao was exceptional, if not outright unbelievable. I am not sure whether he will be interested in another bout against Mayweather. But if it happens, then it will be legendary.

What an impressive performance by 39 years old Manny he was going according to plan all rounds very nice this man is a animal and true warrior thats champion mentality really glad that he got his ko after a long time and i think that if he retire tomorow for sure will be remember as one of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time
I'll quote what Matthysse said.

"My head is raised, I lost to a living legend."

Matthysse: ‘I lost to a great legend’

This only proves that even Pacquiao's opponent is looking up to him and respected him before, during and after the fight.

It's better to stop on talking about his age, Pacquiao's still doing good.
That last fight proves that Manny retains his strength in boxing. What's good in Manny's attitude is since he is a religious person, he doesn't want to trash talk with other players even they trash talk him. His fists will just answer them. Look at Hatton, he slept on the center of the ring.

I think I agree with him that he can do 2-3 fights more before he retire so that he can focus his job on the Philippines as a senator.

I think this fight is already a good and remarkable one and he can retire anytime if he wishes too because what he had shown to the people is already a big pride for all Filipinos and even citizens from other countries who admire Manny all throughout his fights. But if he can still make it to another fight, then it's his choice also despite of his not so young age.

Of course his opponent will respect him because the didn't trash talk and you can't hear Manny making (personal) attacks. For him its his fist that will do the talking that's why many boxing fans loves him and his opponents earn his respect. We have heard fighters making nasty comments about his fighting style, but he remains quiet. Also trash talking is also good to bring people to watch the fight but sometimes its better to let your emotions be in the ring. And if you trash talk and can't back it up, I'm sure that the media will have a feast on you.

Manny Pacquiao’s first stoppage win in nine years.

.

Wow this is a good one for Manny after his previous defeat especially the most announced one with Mayweather. I think this will boost his confidence the more because I had initially supported the idea that he should just go and retire as a family man. He has played his part in the boxing world, his country mean loves him, a religious man and wanted to contest for election if my memory serves me right. He has fought a good fight and I feel this is the time to drop the gloves on a win.

Matthysse's comment on losing to a living legend shows some high spirit of sportsmanship which is rare and he should be commended for it as well and a further testament that it's time Manny needs to go home.

Matthysse is a good guy with great boxing record and its normal that he respect him ....for Pacquiao i mean even if he retire he will be legend ,but their is no doubt that he isnt going good he is in phenomenal shape i can tell you that.I really admire to this guy not only that he is a one of the best and has win world titles in four weight classes he played in profesional Philippine basketball league ,has honorary degree of doctor of humanities,he is a military reservist with the rank of colonel in the reserve force of the Philippine army and the most funny thing is that he got three music albums Cheesy and hes even in politics

Manny said to an interview that he can still go up to 3 fights. After the fight against Matthysse, he's already planning about the next fight, no time for him to rest.  Undecided
It is great that our Senator, Manny Pacquiao won the bout by a KO but he is not in the age that he should be the one finding his opponent. He is a great fighter, especially when he is in his prime but he is in the age now that is close to retirement. I don't care if he loses or he wins but he must really be careful since he still has a country to take care of.
After 9 years without any K.O with his fight, it feels so good specially for him to have that kind of fight.

A lot of talks about his retirement, he's not that too old and he's body is still in condition in fact he said that he's still going to fight soon.

Honestly I'm surprised that Manny manage to pull off a stoppage defeat against the younger man. Pacquiao definitely still has a lot of fight left in him, he looked like a young man in there. I don't think that Matthysse was ready for it, probably assumed he would walk over the Pacman and soon realised otherwise being dropped 3 times Cheesy

Just like many of Manny's opponent, they walk overconfident and thinking that they would walk over Manny. But when they taste his fist, a complete 360 degree happen, we have seen this against Mosley, and after the fight he said that Manny really hits hard and he was surprised by the power. Maybe that's what happen to Lucas Mattysse, he was hit in the first round and you will notice how tentative he became after that.

Im seeing 3 fights more too. If he will rest for long then he will be on 45 years for his 3rd match. Smiley Yearly span is enough time for rest.

Anyways I think it's better if we stick to the first discussion thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/boxing-pacquiao-vs-matthysse-july-15-2018-3131239
It might be enough for a normal warrior but for him with a lot of things to do, I don't think that its going to be enough as a law maker, coach/basketball player, etc.

OP, can you close this thread so we can stick to the first thread?

It hardly matters, this match didn't even have the hype they tried to create. I did see the first round but didn't find the match too interesting and stopped watching.
Besides this match took place during fifa finals so drawing attention would be hard as people would be celebrating or were already on bed lol

If you are really not interested in the first place then you will really have a hard time to watched the fight, contrary to others who watched it all along. Not all here are FIFA enthusiast so same applied that not all are boxing enthusiast. It's your own view so don't take it as general. Smiley

I think Manny Pacquiao can still manage to play boxing,

His last fight against Mattysse proves that the can still bang and his straight left is still there, and now he has a new weapon, that awkward uppercut.  Grin

but President Duterte wants Manny Pacquiao to rest, maybe because of his age, but I think Manny Pacquiao still have the energy to fight Cheesy

LOL. What does the President knows about boxing. I didn't exactly hear what the President says, but maybe he is advising (as a boxing fan) for Manny to quit boxing. But only Manny can decide what's best for him and not even the President can stop him if he wanted to continue with his boxing career.

I don't expect that Manny can still manage to win after his some previous game before.

Do not doubt Pacman. He still proves that can win boxing matches. Its just a matter of who is going to fight him. Crawford? Loma? just bring it on.

The 40-year old guy won the match against Matthysse, whom I thought was on top form. Never expected this result, as I was sure that Pacman was going to lose. The good thing is that I didn't made a bet on this match. Else I would have lost quite a bit.

I also thought of that. Pacman was losing his power so this was a big surprise. But if this fight continued to the 12th round, Matthysse would maybe win the fight over pacquiao just like the recent horne fight. I hope he would show the same thing in his next fights.

Well we have different views about this since though i didn't expect a ko, i didn't mathysse can bear pacquiao. They're not on the same class if i may say and it clearly showed during the fight. Disregard age, speed and power, pacquiao is head and shoulders when it comes to boxing skills

Boboy has been with Manny even before Coach enters the picture. If anyone that would really know Manny, its his old buddy Boboy. Maybe its a breathe of fresh air for Manny seeing Boboy training him again so I agree that Boboy has something to do with Manny performing like his old self.

Yeah boboy was actually the one who discovered pacman's ability on the ring. Pacman now atleast realize that he has to slowdown and prove to roach that pacman can still win without him.

Fortune, his strength and conditioning coach already admitted that Manny over trained during the Horn match. Yes, he is aging so the body reacts differently, they made the adjustments and Manny and the result is perfect. And Manny still proves that he can still draw crowds and win belts at age 40.

That is why I have to commend the training team of pacman. Since they realize that they have to make changes for good.

Well the 40 year old guy has still some pops on both hands isn't it. He maybe a tad slower because of his age, but the timing and the footwork and the power was definitely present. How can you go against that 40 year old guy though. I really don't know if you really follow boxing a lot or just wanted that 40 year old guy to lose.

@crwth, there's a lot of Manny's opponent that trash talk him but fail to deliver, you can find a lot of YT videos about it, specially Hatton and his coach back then Mayweather Sr., saying that Manny always do the same moves, but guess what, Manny retire Hatton. And then there's Margarito and Rios calling Manny "Puto", again, Margarito suffers a broken orbital bone at his right eye and Rios crying after his defeat. So moral lesson, don't trash talk that 40 year old dude. Grin
Haha. I do remember that. Underestimating Pacman at it’s finest. Going 40 but can rough up and beat you up  Cheesy i do agree that the footwork is better and the power is there. I just remember the fight of Manny and Floyd and it was defensive type but they really have patience with each other. More fights.
The good thing i do like with Pacquiao is that he's a humble person even though there are lots of criticisms or underestimation before the fight but he still decide to keep quiet and patient. Yet the results would really be known after the fight. Even after winning this guy do still appreciate opponents performance.
I dont really expect too much for him to win but when hes already on the middle of the ring you can see an old man body is on perfect shape and condition and you will able to see that on his reflexes and reaction times.
Fast and heavy jabs and a good footwork will really be noticed.

Yep, he has been criticised for having a potent left hand, but he has improved his right hand as well. He is very humble but when he is in the ring, he turn into a different animal. Although he won the fight KO/TKO, you can still people bashing Manny and said that Lucas is tailor made for him. Lol. You can't really please everyone.

We can not deny that manny is very talented people, inside  and outside the ring. Age is not a problem to manny, he has power and speed to win over mattysse even he is young. Manny is very impressive with his boxing career, he is not easy to lose, he give a very good fight to everyone, that the reason why manny is one great boxer.

I must say that it was a great effort for both manny and hid team. When freddy roach did not support manny for this fight. Coach boboy did a great job because he really put manny the adjustments that manny needed.

Unlike before pacman does more on weight lifting and reduces the training program to almost 50%. Manny admitted that he was pushed through his limits before during trainings and considering his age he admitted that he thinks because of that massive training programs he always end up being too tired during the fight. Now theyve focused more on his relaxing time. And obviously it actually works

It's great the pacman is still kicking some ass out there but I still don't support it because he risk tarnishing his hard earned reputation because these promoters can use him to promote a new boxer for their money while he builds up loses in the latter ends of this career so he would call it quits as he barely needs or even uses the money after his illustrious career.

I didn't watched the game but I was updated through social media when all of my friends are keep posting about the update.

We don't know his plans yet, he has a lot of plans and he's also using his political career to help other people. I have heard that his running for presidency but there's no confirmation if that's real or not.

Kudos also to Matthysse for being a sportsman. Congrats Manny!

We are seeing more athletes dominate at an older age in today's world.  It's probably from modern nutrition and science which is keeping these athletes at the top level for a long time.

-Mayweather was still considered the best at age 40.
-Roger Federer was written off since tennis players usually peak before age 30.  Federer and Nadal are still dominating majors left and right facing much younger opponents.
-Most consider Lebron the wrolds best basketball player even at age 33.
--there are a ton more examples but you get the point.

The 40-year old guy won the match against Matthysse, whom I thought was on top form. Never expected this result, as I was sure that Pacman was going to lose. The good thing is that I didn't made a bet on this match. Else I would have lost quite a bit.

Grin

Well you got lucky I'm sure many would not have been so lucky many would have just been disappointed by the results as they would definitely have made tons of looses hah what a match who would have seen it coming guess I just relived rocky series. This will surely make him fight more matches as the stakes will now be higher and more revenue to.

Great fight by Pacman. Overall it’s great to see what Manny still has, the power to knockout opponents. I didn’t think it but it was really a great match. Especially because he won. I have seen an article where the coach of Matthysse trashed talk Manny that he will be in the hospital. It’s the other way around. Haha.  Cool

He did a great job there, though he's no longer that quick as we expect him to be but still he still have the shape to be a champ, Pacman can retired now with this tittle and enjoy being an inspiration for most young boxers not only from his home land but also from those young talents who's willing to take their shot inside this arena.

I agree. The speed has somewhat diminished. But its really good to see Manny win again whether its TKO/KO. Lucas looks very tentative though, maybe he really felt Manny's power in the first round that's why he take a knee. The second KD was also questionable but perhaps 3 successive jabs on the temple does make someone losses its balance that's why he decided to for the second time to rest. But the 3rd KO was really the final nail, it was massive and I don't think that Lucas can offer any resistance if he ever gets up from there.
