Many Satoshi loyalists decided to begin the painless upgrade process to XT today. If you need technical support during the upgrade process, there are plenty of friend folks ready to provide assistance at BitcoinTalk.org.

I have a few question if anyone can help:

After Gavin switches Bitcoin over to Mike's Bitcoin-XT project will my BTC be blacklisted if I don't meet the deadline?

Also, I'm really looking forward to being able to prove my identity in order to use Bitcoin, and wonder when and how will it be accomplished on the XT fork?  Will the NFC on my government issued passport be of use?

Upgrading to the Bitcoin XT is as easy and downloading Bitcoin XT and copying your wallet.dat file over to the new directory.

I'm not ready to take sides yet, I think there can be a solution where the current core devs don't break up.

Also, you don't have to copy your wallet.dat. It runs on top of core and uses the same directories.

Per the github:

Bitcoin XT is more experimental than Bitcoin Core, and has a strong emphasis on supporting the needs of app developers and merchants. By running it you not only provide additional services to the network but help build confidence in the implementations, contributing towards consensus for inclusion in a future version of Bitcoin Core.

XT uses the same data directories as Core so you can easily switch back and forth.

1) Increasing the blocksize limit does nothing to solve the problem, it just prolongs it. Assuming that Bitcoin grows exponentially in the future, then the blocksize limit would have to be increased again, and again, and by then hardforking will be much more serious and dangerous.

2) Moving to Bitcoin XT with only two developers there, Mr Hearn and Mr Anderson, is a bad move towards centralization.

Bitcoin enthusiasts the world over have now reached a monumental crossroads. They can remain loyal to Satoshi’s hand-picked successor, and switch over to Bitcoin XT, which will feature new and improved 20MB blocks, or they can stay with the legacy core and risk being left behind.

Last Friday, in a bold move that would have made Nakamoto proud, Bitcoin Chief Scientist Gavin Andreson, announced that he would override the outdated rule of gaining consensus among core developers and hard fork Bitcoin with his friend Mike Hearn. Once these code changes are implemented, people on the old chain risk being left stranded at sea.

"The purpose of this process is to prove to any doubters that they’d better start supporting bigger blocks or they’ll be left behind, and to give them a chance to upgrade before that happens."

Upgrading to the Bitcoin XT is as easy as downloading Bitcoin XT and copying your wallet.dat file over to the new directory. It is recommended that users upgrade to the new client before the fork. If you don’t want to get left behind, you can grab your copy of Bitcoin XT from this download link.

Once you install the software, you should see something resembling the above screenshot when navigating to the debug window. As one Bitcointalk user pointed out, both the legacy client and the XT client will work until Gavin implements the hard fork.

"Network and blockchain-wise, Core and XT are exactly the same, for now. XT just has different functionality."
