Faucets are a way for people with bitcoin to make money off newbies to bitcoin. They pay you a tiny insignificant fraction of a coin, one the protocol fights to keep from happening by making it hard to spend. They do it because they make ad revenue, but hardly anything worth messing with apparently.

You can accumulate coins at free faucets to about 0.001 before withdrawing, it is usefull amount and well spendable

It's a website that gives away free bitcoins. They are usually supported by advertisements.

Meh, i've had a few people earn a couple of mBTC from my faucet. But then again, those are people who come in many times per day.
You could buy a cheap steam game with that, or a humble bundle. But i suppose most people just took their payout to send a few coins from one wallet to another, to test it out i guess.

I doubt so, but now faucets are used to give those who are willing to try BTC a tiny bit of BTC.

I didn't like the scripts that was available, they were either buggy or were using Inputs.io. I also have to pay out about $10 per week as well, so probably a longer time. But as my traffic increases I'll be charging more for paid advertisement. I'm currently leasing advertisement space for 0.02 BTC per week.

Have you tried bitads.net? This way people can easily bid on your adspace.

Nah, I rather have the money in my hand immediately instead of having a threshold or something like that.

I used to run a faucet for a few months.
The whole point for me was to just have a break-even faucet. I could have made a small profit if i wanted to, though. I adapted the payouts so that i maximized what people would receive, without me going bankrupt. Which is still only "dust", but it helps to promote bitcoin.
I think most faucets made a profit though... Simply through advertising.
I doubt anyone ever gave a donation. Mine never got one, even though it ran for a few months.

freebitco.in is different though, this one uses adsense. I'm pretty sure the owner is making a profit, since adsense pays quite a lot.

One average google adsense click gives you $1 (1mBTC). An average faucet gives out .000001 everyday, which means with one single random click by anyone on the ad banners, the faucet owner can pay 1000 people asking for faucet money everyday Grin

I've used faucets once in a while, especially when I first learned of btc.

But I'm wondering.. why do people run faucets?

They're just giving out free money.

Do the Google ads give such significant income to make up for the loss?
