Bitcoin is definitely top rated in the industry currently, and is unarguably the first or number one coin. I think if we are to measure pother altcoins that follow suit in no order, then we must make mention of altcoins like Ethereum, Ripple, Lite, to mention a few. I think there are a good number of altcoins doing great in the market currently and I personally cannot overemphasize on the need for anyone to make their research and the one that works best for them.
Is Ethereum second?
Its obviously one of a popular coin, and for me, Ethereum is number one coin in altcoin.

The coin that is most likely to compete with Ethereum is Binance Coin, BNB is the coin in the Binance ecosystem and it has had a strong growth. With the explosion of IEO perhaps BNB will be a formidable opponent of ETH.
You could say that, Binance was able to increase their coins because with IEO and the participants had to hold it, and Binace continued to develop up to the USD Binance.

For now bitcoin is still in the no. 1 spot because of the value of this coin is very high and follow by the ethereum.
For me the possible coin that can compete to the ethereum is the Binance and mamy supporters of this coin are really want to Binance to become in the spot of the ethereum but now ethereum is still no. 2 and have a lot of potential chatacteriatica than the bnb.

I think BNB has the potential to grow according to my point of view; it will surely beat ETH one day. It has the potential to be a very good coin, considering the fact that it has its separate block chain and many coins are moving to this chain.
I agree, by becoming the biggest exchanger to date, of course more and more people will use it. besides that with IEO currently reducing Ethereum's demand, so ethereum must innovate to stay victorious in cryptocurrency. if unable to compete, I think BNB will be able to surpass ethereum

You are right However, Bitcoin is happening. All the world's first coins. No other coin is compared with Bitcoin. That's all. Can't imagine alt coins with Bitcoin.

Just go to the coinmarketcap.om site and see for yourself what is crypto all about and which is first and in 2nd place and many more.
Btc design its own league. They can not share a same crown. Eth can in the hearts of many but it still be count as second best. I visit a site that clearly show their position.

All are in development and they need more time to improve their technology in the future.
I think that bitcoin cash will die in a few years and Roger Ver will start working on a new project. Ethereum will be number two only if it can change the current state of its scalability. if not, then other coins will replace it

Is Ethereum the second coin in this space? The answer is a capital YES, although once in while, XRP overtakes it but it still regains its position. Looking at Coinmarketcap it is evident the closest rival to Ethereum is XRP while in terms of other features, is BCH thus I can agree with you that BCH is the third. Talking about fourth and fifth cryptocurrencies, it might be a tough bet because BNB is coming up tremendously so I can say LTC is the fourth while BNB is the fifth. Lastly, I don't see ETH and BTC sharing same position, ETH will always be second while Bitcoin is the first.
Coinmarketcap is the best place to see the rankings of the coins but if you believe into something then so be it. I don't have much time learning what's the top coin because my priority is to look for a best coin that can give profit to me despite of their rankings. You'd better to focus on the technology and not the rankings because a lot of coins on top that is not working well and can't give profit to you.
You have the point mate because XRP is on the top 3 coin yet you can't make good profit on that right now. Rankings is just a basis for investment, yes BTC is on top and ETH is the second largest coin in terms of marketcap but those coins can also go dump. With the right coins on your wallet, having huge profit is possible. I'm also investing on a coin that is out on the top 100 because they are also good and I make profit on that. 
The 3rd biggest is Ripple for a long time. But it doesn´t matter which cryptocurrency is the biggest according to coinmarketcap website. They rank cryptocurrencies by capitalization and not by number of users, number of transactions or trading volume. So it can be a bit misleading which cryptocurrency is the biggest.

what exactly are you asking? there's already a site that shows ranking of coins from its market capitalization. try take a look coinmarketcap or coingecko.
discussing the altcoin problem that has potential, of course it can be a long talk, because developments will always happen, and there will always be new altcoins with more potential. at the moment, we judge the best altcoin in terms of volume, and transactions that occur. because the more transactions there are, the greater the needs of people for that.
so far, I see ethereum is still the second of cryptocurrency, and many altcoins have the potential to replace ethereum, such as bch, bnb, wave, and others.

On what basis were you ranking the coins? Is it which coin came into existence first or by the total market capitalization of the project right now or just the popularity?
