These things are ridiculously difficult to get a hand on from the Bahamas where I live. I don't even want to be able to cash them out in USD I just want to buy and hold onto them until a time when they are so mainstream I would be able to walk up to an atm and withdraw.
Bitcoin ATM to use for deposit and withdraw would be easiest solution, now it is really complicated to use the exchanges. There are only few Bitcoin ATMs so far, but I guess in next years it will be better
Easiest way. Takes forever to wire money and get your account verified. Easier to cash out this way though.

Using government currency to buy BTC then sell for government currency,
not what BTC was designed for.
The average citizen does not care whether or not their monetary supply is controlled by the government; the average person will at most only think about how easily they can move it, save it, spend it and what they can buy with it.

What about paying for your rent in Bitcoin? What about paying for your monthly insurance premium in Bitcoin? What about paying for large medical expenses in Bitcoin? What about saving for your child's college education and paying it in Bitcoin?

I agree. One of the easiest ways to get started is to setup a wallet and then buy some BTC from a friend and have him send it to you. If you don't know anyone, coinbase is a decent option but they require a lot of personal information and waiting period to get verified. Localbitcoins would be another alternative worth looking into.
Well ya, you will have to verify some info and link a bank account. If you want to be anonymous then use http://localbitcoins.com and see if anyone is fine with that.

The exchanges are just trying to comply with current anti money laundering laws. When you open a bank account you have to do the same thing. The only difference here is you cannot just give them your lic to make a copy on the copier. You actually have to send it into someone you do not see. It comes down to trust. If you are uneasy with that, then you are right you will have limited access.
Whoever establishes itself as a market first for simplifying the crypto to cash process can look forward to joining the ranks of the big boys like Paypal and Amazon.

I think this is the single most important factor which dissuades the mainstream population from using Bitcoin. It definitely has the capacity for the same level of anonymity as cash transactions but sadly not the versatility.
Being able to use pre-paid Debit Cards to buy Bitcoins would be a great addition.
