The name was just awful. They got outcompete by other exchanges like coinbase,bitstamp,circle etc. They didn't invest enough in marketing and didn't interact enough with the bitcoin community. Their overall strategy was really bad implemented and that's why they had to shut down. In my opinion it wasn't a surprise at all that they shut down.
100% it was the name...no way I would use something called buttercoin for any service. Amazing they are good enough to get over 1 mill in funding, but let a stupid name like that be used.
I always thought the same, i just didn't want to slam them unfairly. With a good name, who knows what they could have achieved.

They were given 1.4 million worth of financing but still they closed down.
No one knows where the 1.4 million is right now.
We know they picked a ridiculous name and that no one apparently even heard of them until they declared bankruptcy. Did they do anything right? Anyone investing in them should learn to ask better questions about a business plan next time.
Of course they did something right, they raised at least $1.3m from investors including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Y Combinator, Centralway Ventures, Google Ventures and Wedbush Securities. That must have given them some big fat pay packets during the short period Buttercoin was open.

I never heard about it and I was ok. That was probably one of the low copyes of BTC. People please if you are going to do new crypto, make something litlle more original.

well, when you read nothing and just post you get that result
they probably lost alot of money when they had the recruitment "drive", if you referred someone you and him both got 20$. Im sad that they are gone, I could easily store usd in my account without paying fees (wire etc) and keep them without having to buy them. People say use coinbase, but they don't support my state and coinbase thinks their program knows my town better than me even though Ive lived here for 18 years. Sure the name was funky but who cares they did what they offered well (for me at least).

isn't buttercoin a service and not a name of a coin? they seems to be a trading platform, they are not related with altcoin...
