Can the petition be more specific about who those "human rights activists" were? From the experience, howling starts in USA only if some US State.Dep-funded NGO heads are starting to get "inconvenienced" in the countries they are paid to disrupt. In all other cases, human rights activists can just rot for all USA cares.
And by the amount of MSM attention, it looks like the cross-hairs and the attack angle has shifted a bit, targeting BRICS through China. Of maybe USA is just expanding the battle front.

Thats my suspicion aswell. All of sudden, quiet on the western front (Russia), now 84 (in country of 1.3 billion) "chinese activists" that received backing from US foreign department are the hot news.
I wonder how many black were shot in the back in the US during the same time...
US is using the NGOs in the same way as former euro powers were using jezuits. To form fifth column within prey/host country.

Since the morning of July 10th, the Chinese authorities have begun a large-scale crackdown on human rights lawyers and activists in China. Within two days, over 60 human rights lawyers and activists have been forcefully taken away by the police or “disappeared”. The number is still rising.
Since Xi Jinping came to power, China’s human rights record has kept worsening. Under his reign over 1000 dissidents have been arrested. We urge President Obama and the U.S. government to investigate this case of severe human rights infringement, and, on humanitarian ground, take strong measures to intervene. Xi’s state visit to the U.S. scheduled for September this year should be cancelled, and all official exchanges with the Chinese government should be suspended until this matter is resolved.
