i mean thats you take my [intentionally-sarcastic and off-course]examples of "why you should respond at corresponding level" too seriously.
and yes, DDoS sometime can cost lives, manly unintended[i hope].
aside notable example with targeting hospitals, airlines/airliners, powerstation, rest critical infrastructure, impact and its scale hardly [fully]predictible :/
we're not wave knives or shot bulelts to someone, who 'look" dangerous, or even [just]theaten[by words] us, usually.

p.s.
actually in trolls context, intel gatering is WAY more interesting, IMO.
and very-very-very curious about recent trolls assault on forum and already do some OSI on-topic.
and my [unbaked by forensinc]assumption thats is both mixed corporate[mostly financial]zealots/trolls and newspapers trolls.

1. its written BEFORE you post and unrelated to it. basicly you're right, but particular wallet-holding node is still trace-able. and thus - vulnerable.
2. if you reading something, please read. if someone provide you tactical/strategy example, take it as t/s example, not course of action/advice, if doctor say you "jump from WTC!", you should turn on brain AND memory, probably Wink and etc and etc.
1) Fair enough.
2) I... could not understand a single word of that.

Could we just get their Bitcoin addresses (like PM trolls telling them you will donate), and then DDOS the hell out of them?? Then they will never receive money with the same wallet ever again, and hopefully leave here as well.
you're talk about serious criminal offense.

It is a global network, there is no way to know if they are US based from their wallet address.
its not SO global network. not yet. even not 100x from required size/flow.
let alone activity status relevance to investigation initiation/success.
point is, you never endager someone life, if he just make minor mistake, probably unintentional, right ?
same with IT warfare - responding violently for bitching is almost same as hurting kids.
of course, if trolls, does measurable damage, including society and/or health/lifes, its completely different business.

1) It's a moot point, see my above post.
2) A DDOS can't endanger someones life... Seriously, where did you go to tech school, because they should lose their accreditation.

You can't DDOS a wallet address.  It's not an address on a network, it's simply a private key.  I can create an address with some pen and paper calculations (would be rather hard, since I'm not a computer, but possible), and you could send money to it.  I could, at a later date, inject that private/public key pair into my wallet and voila, I have ze monies.  An address is just the "rights" to spend the money, not some kind of identifying IP address or somesuch.

It is a global network, there is no way to know if they are US based from their wallet address. It's not a federal crime to DDOS foreigners, and also Bitcoin is legally gray anyways.

Just stop responding to them.  Think of this as growing pains, it sucks now, but we're going to be stronger/faster.

I would be very interested in a more serious, invite only message board/system.  It seems that much of irc has also become polluted.

+1

The first week or so in the forums and IRC channels were awesome. I learned so much...

Pretty sure that's not coming back anytime soon Sad

I say we go with our min 100 posts to start a thread. Or I may open another forum with an invite system or something. We need a place for the grown-ups to meet and get work done.

I support this.

Also, move to VBulletin, hash IP addresses, and for the most part a more private PM system.

The better question is, has the bitcoin forum outgrown the capabilities of smf (http://www.simplemachines.org/)?

Offhand I don't have any good recommendations, but I know there things out there.  Is there a for pay service that hosts message boards with solid moderation and identity management (with reputation).

Maybe we should be creating some threads addressing how moderation could/should occur and see if there is some sort of community consensus.

If it comes to a new system, I like Vanilla IMO.

Please, please, please can we get a minimum post limit on thread starting.  Also, I do think it would be good for the grown-ups to have a private or perhaps moderated place to discuss.

Won't help, they'll just piss allover existing threads until they get enough posts to start their own. The only solution is moderation, or if you find that unpalatable:

Just stop responding to them.  Think of this as growing pains, it sucks now, but we're going to be stronger/faster.

I made a graph of the problem.

      Time vs Quality of Posts
= +
=    +
=       +
=         +
=           +
=             +
=                +
=                   + (6/11/11)
=
=
======================================
                       Time

As you can see, it will only get worse. It's really hard for newcomers here because of all of the trolling. Something needs to be done. Maybe we need a karma system, like reddit, so that the higher-quality posts rise to the top.

Please donate if you like the graph/idea (addr in sig).

Any system that gains sufficient social interest will also attract griefers. Griefing Bitcoin itself is too... well, impossible... so the griefers are targeting the community. Like Schumer's political attack, this too is part of growing and should be expected. It's up to the community members to remind each other never to feed a Mogwai after midnight... or well, feed trolls at all.
