Aso yes sorry I thought we were talking about edit and not a new post.

I normally write externally and then copy the text here + click on preview.
So you are safe and still have a backup if something goes very badly wrong Grin

This has never happened to me (fortunately) but in case of emergency I would use ninjastic.space from TryNinja.
From there you can get your deleted/edited/destroyed text back 1:1 Smiley
That's only if you've posted it somewhere on this forum, but what if someone hasn't posted it and he or she accidentally deletes all the text? Looks like the OP's situation is exactly the same as what I'm asking you this because he probably hasn't posted it yet but the text was deleted by mistake.

If the OP copied it from somewhere else [notepad or something] then he probably still has the data in the clipboard to paste again on the whiteboard, but if he manually writes it on the whiteboard then he just has to rewrite the whole set of text to post it. One suggestion to the OP that I found helpful, always take advantage of the preview button function so you can minimize errors [missing text on the whiteboard due to accidental deletion] because if that happens then you just have to copy it from the draft.

If you are comfortable with installing an app on your smartphone to get this feature, there is a solution to the lack of a proper redo button.
The app is called Inputting Plus: Ctrl + Z/F/C/V.
This guide explains how the app works and mentions ways to undo deleted text with the Gboard as well.

Do your own research and decide for yourself if the app is something you want to install on your phone!

Something useful in replies but, it doesn't work with browser where you actually need it. Gboard works when you delete with gesture one by one, not when everything deleted like select all+ delete (in mobile way).

If you ever click on Preview or Post it, it will be saved in your draft page. You can summon it from draft if it belongs to your last 100 posts.

I'm aware of that, that's not it.
This is the closest to your solution that you are going to get. The forum is ultimately accessed via a browser, and you are subject to the features that the bowser you use to access the forum has.

Theymos has intentionally not used JavaScript for the majority of the forum’s functionality because of the potential for privacy risks involved in having JavaScript enabled. Notwithstanding any privacy risks associated with some solution involving JavaScript to track what is in the post window, any feature that tracks the content of the post is going to be space intensive, which will lead to a negative user experience.

I suggest that you periodically save your posts via the draft function.

Winamp ❤️. Damn, it's been like 15 years since the last time I saw it.
Lol thankfully someone noticed!

The new forum software is mostly done as theymos sneak peeked years ago. There are issues with data transition and testing. We need more testing on a new forum software. Two or three years ago, people got hyped to test it but it was cooled down since bull run 2020.
Wasn't it "mostly done" for a while now though? I checked the GitHub repo, and the last commit was like a year ago. Lips sealed

Not your keys, not your coins!
I also understand on a serious note that theymos is very much unwilling to add anything to this old software of the forum. So, you could suggest it on the new software sub board

A current forum software, SMF is old and something that is too hard to integrate in or improve (again as theymos said). In addition, itf we have draft page that is good enough.

If you can not find it in draft page, you can try with third party tool like LoyceV's unedited posts data scrapper.

Bam, you got that right there right! I've literally experienced lots and lots if fjs and it's usually so frustrating. After coming up with a idea for which your first attempt was already getting by perfectly, your long pressing the delete bottin in an attempt to delete fee lines just ends you wiping of the whole stuff! When it's done, am like oh shit, wtf! Unfortunately, you can never come up with the same perfect presentation but again, you could try.

It hits me now that you came up with the undo botton. This means the forum has got to have a Bot or some program that works a kind of a draft system that auto saves right before you post. Would that be a great idea for the forum? I really can't tell if we would need a LoyceV to get this set up but, its unnecessary to me as either typing off forum only to paste when done in the comment box or being a lot more careful while you tap the delete button would go along way to avoiding this error.

What happened to OP has been my case for quite a couple of times. I tried to find solution but I couldn't at the mean time, the only solution I found was to be careful and ensure that before I highlight or edit text, I will deliberately preview it to make sure it has entered into the draft bin. By this, any other edits I want to make on the post, I will be sure a copy of it is saved in the draft. That's the hack I work with...lolx.

I do use note apps when typing topics or similar (only after wiping whole topic just like in op) and they have such options but just for replying comments, I don't bother myself that much but guess will have too.
If you find yourself this comfortable on your phone then I don't mind advising you to stick to the habit. I know what you want to enjoy from those features [undo or redo] but not all of them can be implemented on this old website. Hope epochtalk can help you have a feature like this in the future, but for now enjoy what it has.

I don't have idea how much hard/easy would it be to build this but instead of adding this new feature, I think utilizing the "draft" button more effectively is good idea. Like- whatever we are writing will be saved as draft instantly. In that case, we can have everything in the draft even if we mistakenly delete.

On mobile, there are actually a few solutions, such as swipe left with 2 fingers on Samsung keyboard (note: I just found this, and haven't tested it). But I'm not using that keyboard, and it's not important enough to switch.

Seems Samsung keyboard is only available for Samsung devices ( shouldn't have expected otherwise). Anyway, wasn't aware of it and definitely great feature, wish more keyboards would adopt that.

I think this is not a website issue and has nothing to do with Bitcointalk, But there is away to save text while you type just incase this kind of mistake happens, and that is by always using the "Preview" button even when there is nothing to preview Grin.

Seriously, I've made it a habit to always press the Preview button after typing two or three lines, this has saved me a lot of times when I was trying to post something and after typing and clicking the post button, I encounter a network issue, which sometimes, clears my text after refreshing the page, instead of starting all over again, i just click the "Draft" button to recover my previous text which i saved by using the Preview button.

I have to admit that I have made the mistake of selecting more than I intended from a piece of text and deleting it more than once while posting on Bitcointalk. An undo button would come in handy if there wasn't already a solution. But as mentioned earlier, CTRL Z and CTRL Y can help you out in situations like that. Still, I don't think everyone knows about those two shortcuts. This thread will at least teach or remind them about that.

This is a keyboard/OS feature, not a website feature. On a computer, CTRL-Z is easy. You could use custom software to achieve this on a phone, obviously though I wouldn't recommend downloading unverified code from the app store. I bet there will be open source options out there, that you could take a look at the code before installing. Some custom ROMS ship with this  sort of functionality, since they're trying to get away from relying on Gboard.

Because if every small issue needed a built-in solution, then Bitcointalk's UI would end up looking something like these:

Gotta agree with others, I don't think that theymos should bother with features like that as they are not such a big problem anyway. I've been on many forums for abouit 20 years now and I don't remember seeing "undo": option on any of them, and never even thought about needing one. But who knows, maybe that option will be included in the new forum  Cheesy

That can be very annoying on mobile, but this is one of those instances where not every user error/problem necessarily needs to have a built-in solution. The viable solution here is to be a bit less careless when editing text.

I was going to edit you comment editor screenshot with undo/redo buttons patched in, but then realized without js this wouldn't work (confirm?).
