It is especially required for the following subs IMHO...
1. Bitcoin Discussion
2. Development & Technical Discussion
3. Beginners & Help
In what ways are we going to sort the threads to find the meritable posts..
Is it going to be the duty of our MODS or a bot

Even this boards you mentioned, each and every day, users get merited on such boards..

If only the BD section could reduce the crap that gets scribbled down there, then maybe our MODS would have the time to surf through for merits
But for now they are actually surfing to trash threads, ban bumpers and lock redundant topics
Did you even understand the basic of what OP suggested?

If would be even nicer if some of these sorting options could be restricted by a time interval. For example, the most read or merited threads over the last 30 days or whatever period of time one choses.
Specifically on merited threads, it could also be interesting to see the number of meriters on the thread and the number of merited people. That gives an indication of how many people are involved in the merit being awarded on a given thread, although I’m fully aware this is wishful thinking, at least with the current software.

I gave those features a go, and added them to the Merit Dashboard some time ago.

It would likely be done automatically as forum function, just like you can sort threads by views, date, user etc. It could even be a new link under these:

Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
Watchlist

You could have sort threads by merit link in every board which would order them for you. Would be helpful to find the worse spam threads for locking or trashing as well as the spam threads with no merit will go to the bottom. I'd like to see this anyway. Might help in finding the worthwhile threads in amongst all the trash.

This would be the case where you assume that meriting is somehow an indicator to how important a post is? Sadly, on BTT it's a little bit different. If you need to find posts based on filters, you should try the search function.
You are denying the very purpose of merit. Moreover, merit based filtration does not prohibit anyone from traversing other threads.

Here is a technical suggestion for theymos. You have already created this page for Merit Stats, i.e. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats. How about just adding a board-wise filter to it?

For example, Top-merited topics, all-time of Beginners & Help section should be found with this link - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toptopicsat;board=39.0

All it requires is just another INNER JOIN, which should not be costly.
This is a fantastic suggestion. I wish it's implemented soon. Roll Eyes

Going by what the OP is suggesting, it means certain sections should be proscribed due to their lack of merits and seen as spam warehouse. Are we all ready for that? I have come to realize that sections on technical discussion and Meta have the highest merit distributed but we all aren't tech guys. Some of us need the humour away from technical jargons.
Does not seem like you understood OP's suggestion, which appears to be pretty good actually. OP said threads to be ordered as per merit in different sub-forum. That should not push you away from your humor threads in off-topic.

Thanks for the suggestion. Though I am a newbie, I still feel that it would improve readability of the forum.

Well, I suppose, this would be a handy alternative to the original proposal.

Good suggestion. I'd rather expect it to be implemented across the board and made default way of how threads are sorted in various subs.
True. Discovery of quality posts will be easier if this is how threads are ranked in various boards.

If something like this were possible and the topics that collected the most merits would be the most searched, commented and visualized, eventually it would serve as a downvote, upvote. I think that would be a great option. Especially for users who can not access the forum daily. The "best discussions topics of the week"

Give this a go:
use the Merit Dashboard, go to the Rankings tab, and filter at the top by one of the subsections you mention. The Top Merited Thread ranking on the right will adjust and show top merited threads sorted by total aggregate merits in the thread. You can additionally use the date filter to delimit the period of time that the merit aggregate applies to.

The only thing is that you will then need to locate the thread on Bitcointalk, since there is no hyperlink to the thread in this case (there is a hyperlink in many other cases such as user profile or specific post).

Why it's needed?
I am curious to know the reason for the sorting. I guess this creates two possible metric...

1. Sorting by total number of merits a topic received (including it's replies)
2. Sorting by total number of merits only the topic post have

The reason is to quickly surf quality posts. Simple.

Why is this your way to know what threads are trash and what threads are good to post on? I don't think this is a good idea as if done it maybe will be used by spammers as an advantage. They might filter out what threads have the highest merits received and concentrate their spam over there which I think is really a bad idea. This spammers don't need such tool as it won't really be a good thing for the community overall. Sorry but you must find the good threads on your own manually.
