yes, it's seems annoying to see different colors of flashing images. it will be difficult for us means users who read and posts, but i was thinking from promoting or advertising point of view.
if some businesses design interesting and unique gif or live images which can catch user's attention then it will be good for them to get more members on their platform or more customers for their service.

Even worse, it's going to drain battery life on mobile devices way too much. This isn't Times Square or Las Vegas, we can have a site without flashing billboards everywhere you scroll. It would be highly annoying to read anything except for very old threads.

Some of the user responses before me seem to be enough to answer the OP's question, but now is the OP satisfied enough with the responses? If basically some of the answers of users before me are enough to make you understand, then please lock your thread because I will not see this thread as needing more discussion. Live signatures/ animated signature like you mean are not allowed, so that should just be enough to answer your doubts.

So, don't ignore your thread if your problem has been resolved. Consider my advice if you have found the answer.

I have seen that many users have live avatars on their profiles, especially in the Wall Observer thread in the Speculation board. but I am curious, can we use live signatures too? have you come across any users who have applied live signatures?
I like to know if we can use live signatures here and, if we can, what level or rank do we need to reach to use them? I could not find any information when I searched using search button. Has anyone here tried making a live signature, and if yes, could you please share the BB Code for it?
You meam gif/Animated avatar? It used to be supported on the forum a long time ago but for some reason it has been discontinued now. No longer supports animated avatars. And speaking of animated signatures, it never existed before and still cannot be possible to use. But those who set it at that time were not disabled

The banners you see animated like signatures are not signatures. No user can do this.this a banner ads by forum
Maybe you are right op maybe ask for Forum ads. I've never seen an animated signature in as long as I've been on this forum. But there was a time when animated avator was supported and those who didn't change after setting avatar are still seen and supported. And in the early days of the forum a Member rank member could use an avatar as well as a signature but that too has been discontinued now. Many new things have been added to the forum and many things that were there before have been closed

If I may offer a suggestion, you would probably benefit going from section to section and reading all the sticky threads in them. You seem to create a lot of threads asking questions looking for explanations on how this works or how that works, and you may be able to find the answers to some of these questions on your own.

Not getting on your case for this because we are here to help, but try to research yourself 1st and if you cannot find the answer make a thread or pm someone.

what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?

i thought it [animated avatars no longer allowed] was because the board got hacked via an animated avatar exploit back in the day (like ~2011-15?) but cant find anything with a quick search.
I don't know what the facts are. I wasn't even registered here when all that went on but I've stumbled on some monikers with animated avatars here. Some of the users who still have them are enter no longer using those accounts for whatsoever reasons or the owners are deceased. By the way, between your thought that it was stopped because it enabled "the board" (whatsoever that means) to be hacked and that loading it on the site takes enough of forum time, I think I would go with the second explanation.

board = forum.. a hold term over from bulletin board systems from the dial up modem days

anyway, found it.. check quotes from 02 oct 2013 by @theymos here

Quote
Also, the attacker was able to upload a PHP script and some other files to the avatars directory.

https://cryptolife.net/bitcointalk-hacked/

and at reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1nmdq4/bitcointalk_hacked/

and here on the forum
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.3290091

unsure if that was the final determination however. its a bit off topic though but still interesting

Also loading an animated avatar might affect the loading speed of the forum whenever we will visit multiple thread.
I believe that's a plausible reason theymos disabled animated avatars.

I believe that's a plausible reason theymos disabled animated avatars. I guess if he monetizes it like the copper membership thing or evil fees for IP penance, there are users who will want to still go for it. I confess that I like animated avatars, anyway. I don't find any insights with the current avatar pattern. They're just bland, sitting there boringly beneath our monikers like dead pieces of items.

OP I don't know if that depends on rank but all I feel about that is that, it can only happen to those members who have been here for long like those who have better reputation, those prominent members per say, don't really know how to place them but you know what I'm trying to say.
Live animation or sig as you call it is some how hard to see on members like you and I. Don't take it to heart 😅 but you have to work your way through to that stage.
But why do you want to have such?  Because to me it seems you feel like having it, I'm I correct?🤔

Well, it's not because of their reputation or how long they've been around the forum. Turns out, the rule against animated avatars was introduced later, and those who are still rocking those quirky avatars probably never got around to changing them since then. I stumbled upon this after reading a few posts.

Now, when it comes to animated signatures, Jayce mentioned that they aren't doable with BBcode, and HTML banners are Banned. So, if we want to sport cool avatars and signatures like that, it looks like we'll have to wait for Thymos to make an announcement.

do you know reason for banning the animated signatures?
If you ever find yourself with a question like that, just note: anything that can be abused or used to its absolute limit to earn money on this forum will be.  I have not read all the responses in this thread, and there might be a correct answer from one of our more informed historians, but if I had to make an educated guess I'd say at some point animated signatures got way out of control.

I think that's the reason why there are any rules at all here--simply to keep the idiots who'd run amok in check.  Theymos has an extremely reasonable set of "unofficial" rules, which are much more lenient than other forums I've seen.  Most of those rules probably evolved parallel to the evolution of signature campaigns.

It depends on your rank.
It doesn't depend on your rank as animated signatures are not allowed so how come anyone have them in their signature space? As said above by @jaycee it's hovering CSS effect and admin hasn't allow to implement this so nobody can use it.

Using it will be negative, as it attracts the eye's attention, it will cause confusion and less attention to what you post. It may lead to many people hiding signatures, which means fewer people will click on your signature links, and after a while, signature campaigns will stop because they did not get enough feedback.

we cannot use live bbcode signature, but we can use live images in signature like GIFs.
I found a example of live signature of wolfbet which is old and captured by wayback machine
It is not signature but advertisement banner. Signature space with bbcode can not be animated whilst advertisement banner is animated. Unfortunately, theymos stopped forum advertisement auctions and banners months ago. See add design rules if you are curious.

It stopped after Round 353

In advertisement point of view, it is not good too. You must know such animated avatars or advertisement banners are really annoying with most of forum users. You also have to know forum users can customize their profile settings to turn off all user avatars and signatures. When they do this, your money spends for advertisements through avatars and signatures will be useless.

Yes, i clicked wayback link and seen that it was moving when i hovering over. I was thinking it is moving in specific time frame. and guessed it's a GIF.

No, it is not an animated gif; it is an HTML5 animated banner. Animated gifs lack a mouse-over function; they simply loop the animation continuously.

do you know reason for banning the animated signatures? In gifs we can say it takes more storage and when uploaded by many users it will take huge amount of storage.
and it's not annoying too, because we will see flashing lights when we hover on it.

As far as I know, there have never been animated signatures. Signatures are made using BBCode, and since BBCode does not allow any form of animation and GIFs in signatures are not enabled by forum admins, animated signatures are not possible. What you see on the Wayback archive is not a signature but an HTML banner (you will notice that it is displayed below the post area) that were active on the forum at that time.

Regarding animated avatars, I am not sure why they were removed, but it probably wasn't due to storage issue.

I think signatures are good in their current state and adding any animation would make them annoying for everyone. I have seen live avatars on some users profiles but those have been set during the times when the live avatars weren't disabled on the forum and those lucky few have kept their avatars since then because they knew that if they change their avatar even for a single time then they won't be able to get that live avatar again on their profiles.

Like @jayce said that thing is just an html banner and that isn't a live signature and surely he also said that it's disabled on the forum and that means that such kind of banners can't be applied on profiles anymore. The signatures in their current state are pretty eye-catching and the advertisers are happy with those signatures, and that's why I don't think there is any need to have those html banners back on forum.
