After all, the time spent for reports like OP is difficult to reward, same goes to scam ICO exposers like ICOEthics. They spend so much of their time to point out scams and don't get paid for that. I remember ICOEthics posting a donation address and in addition to Merit that's also a solution.

Finally, Merit is just a number on your profile and it's difficult to "reward" contributions to the forum. I just see them as an additional thing and it's up to everyone if and how much Merit they like to spend.

All the work is done voluntarily and I hope these members will stay a very long time here to make the forum a better place. Their experience would be difficult to replace if they left. The adjustment of the trust system was already a very good decision and for my impression more members are interested in doing reports now.

You seem to be right here and I somehow agreed. But each one of us has different kind of opinion when it comes in rewarding Merits. It is really unfair that those members who just leave negative tags won't receive Merits but as long as the Merit is distributed in good ways, then there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, what OP is trying to achieve here is to catch those fools (alt users/cheaters) which will benefit the forum and rewarding Merits to anyone who help him/her wasn't a bad motivation for those who are willing.

These guys deserve more than just merit, no debate is required  for that matter.

A little reward in Merit for a good and time-consuming research is encouraging more people to make reports in my opinion. But the research has to be good of course to prevent bad (or faked) reports to gain a quick Merit. I think compared to the time for doing such reports the rewarded Merits for them are often still very low at a Merit / hour ratio. And the value of detailed and accurate reports to improve the forum is also an important factor to send a few Merits.

not sure if this is a proper way to reward alt busters, i also think spending merit this way could very likely reduce your chances of becoming a merit source.
