The coin wasn't lost in shipment.  I have the coin in my hands.

What he means is that maybe the coin was "intercepted" en route to a legitimate customer and therefore never funded by Casascius.  Just a theory, not very likely.  More likely hardbtc.org is just a slapshod operation that will get around to it whenever they get around to it.

One solution would be to e-mail Casascius directly with the public key of the coin, and some proof of ownership (picture of the coin with message/name, receipts/e-mails regarding purchase) and let him decide whether to fund it or not.  However, it would be difficult for him to know who the rightful owner is coming from a reseller, and he's probably pretty busy, so I would wait at least a week or so before bugging him about it.

I ordered a 1 BTC coin from hardbtc.org on May 17th.  I received the coin in the mail on May 22, at a US address.  They sent the coin to me unfunded, with a balance of 0 BTC as a security measure, to be funded by them later (apparently in case the coin was lost in the mail).  I promptly emailed them to ask them to send the 1 BTC to the address on the coin, but they have yet to do so, almost 24 hours later.

Should I be concerned?  I would not think it would take a day to send the BTC to the coin's address.

That seems strange. I thought all casascius coins are funded by Mike Caldwell. I don't think Mike is selling unfunded coins to reseller. He may ship them unfunded, but funds them after the coins are received. I guess it's possible that these coins were "lost" in shipment.

What is a paper wallet?

You should handle your savings needs with a 2-factor paper wallet.

While I'm flattered that people trust me and my coins, leaving me with theoretical access to your savings is really not the best option.  The best thing you can do is put your funds on an address protected by "something you have" and "something you know".  The technology to do this is available at no charge.

If you really want to use a physical bitcoin product for storage, and are able to generate the "intermediate code" from a passphrase (e.g. with Bit2factor.org), I can sell you a 2-factor savings bar that is truly zero-trust.  (You only have to trust that I created the bar correctly, and nothing more)
Hey, thanks for the answer Mike!

You are right, I will probably store my saving on a paper wallet. I guess it's the best thing to do, even if I'm not that rich.

I didn't know about those bars, that's very interesting.
I'll hit you up when I will be really paranoid with my BTC storage. Smiley

Just ordered my first one and can't wait to receive it. Cheesy
But now I'm somehow lost with what I should do with that beautiful coin…

Should I redeem it? Or would it be better to let the hologram on it and store the coin somewhere I couldn't lost it? Maybe I could also just use it as a cold storage wallet and send all my BTC to the public address? But what if I want to sell it later, there would be more than 1 BTC, and thus I would have to remove the sticker, making it almost unsellable… Oh, I can't even decide if I want to redeem it or not.

That will be my only one (for now) so I guess I wouldn't peel the sticker, but I'm so terrified to lose it and I clearly want to show it to some friends, while would love to use it as a sweet storage for all of my savings.

Any advice? And and anyone have a picture of what it looks like without the hologram? (on recent series)

Various metals:

The smaller denomations are mostly made from brass I believe and the larger coins such as the BTC10 are made from .999 silver and then we have the BTC100 gold plated bars and then also the BTC1000 .9999 fine gold coin

You can buy quantities less than 50 from resellers. Look on Mike's sales page for links to resellers on ebay, bitmit.org, and other sites.

I have redeemed one 2012 1BTC coin through Mt. Gox, and it worked flawlessly.

Who is John Galt?
I handed out a very large number of the blanks at the end of the conference. If you grabbed a handful and you found a good use for them, consider sending Mike some money for them.
