why is he sure that it is bitcoin, while the advertisement clearly says BFICoin? if the ad only showed the logo, I think it might happen, but by advertising BFICoin, people wouldn't spell BFICoin as bitcoin. you know what i mean.
However, your friend needs a very deep education for this. I'm pretty sure that if a project names their coin with the name bitcoin 3.0 or a name with elements of bitcoin, and has a total supply of 21 million coins, then he or she will probably feel that it's the next generation of bitcoin.

Yesterday i came across an unfortunate incident and i never thought people will be so dump here Sad

We are having a PSL season 8 (a very popular cricket tournament where local and International players play the game) and it is being broadcast over the national sports channel locally and also worldwide.

One of my friend told me that he has heard about bitcoin as it is being advertised in that tournament and he asked me if he should buy Bitcoin as it was advertised in PSL ?

I was shocked as I never saw a bitcoin advertisement on national TV but later the whole story fold up.

Actually, they were advertising the Bficoin BFIC coin to which my friend thought that it was bitcoin.  Sad I told him that this is not real bitcoin but he insisted that I was wrong. I told him that bitcoin has 21 million supply and he told that this coin also had the same supply https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bficoin  Sad
The difference between both coins are clear, both in spelling and price value, of which even a new born baby can testify to that. Because since Bitcoin is a very popular project, the developers of this coin "bficoin" must have used a similar name, so as to lure people into investing in their coin, and at such campaign through football sponsorship, hence, making ignorant newbies believe it's the true Bitcoin, whereas, it's just a shitcoin.

However, I'm happy you were there to enlighten your friend on the difference between both coins, because just as the price value of "bficoin" is currently $18.5, the current price of Bitcoin is $21,488

True, even a simple read up and using up your own common sense could be able to tell on whats the main difference and you wouldn't really be that blind nor really that dumb on not to notice it out.  Grin
If you are a noob which did really make out some mistake then for sure on next time you would really be that aware because we know that experience is the best teacher and out of those errors and mistakes
are the things which would really make you that learn. Its not necessary for you to commit out some mistakes which you could eventually be able to avoid if you are really that
reading up others experiences.

But for newbie who doesn't have knowledgeable person beside them this new information to read is kinda bit confusing especially when searching it up on media platform for sure they will lead to hyip or many ponzi schemes which offer to good to be true returns if they invest using bitcoins.

But if they know how to digest the learnings thru their experiences maybe they can learn a lot from those things.

Such a primitive advertisement but it worked.More in this story it upsets that a person does not want to do his own research, but believes everything that is said on TV. "Thanks" to such cryptocurrencies that only spoil the overall impression of worthy projects. There is an expression: good does not need advertising.
Maybe it looks primitive but many people believe and even deny that it is not bitcoin. We also can't force them not to believe that it's not bitcoin because they already feel confident about it. The only thing that could change that was when they saw how the project wasn't doing well and how bitcoin could become more popular. At that point, they're just starting to wonder what the truth is and if they dive straight into it, they'll find that what they believed all along was wrong and not bitcoin. If that had happened to me, I would have walked away from it and wouldn't force it and let them figure it out alone.

I see why a company would choose a confusing name and Bitcoin's supply, as they probably rely on people mixing it up with Bitcoin and/or investing because of believing that crypto is a big thing, without differentiating between coins. Companies like that benefit from the lack of regulations of the altcoin market, as I believe in other fields that would be called unfair competition and misleading behaviour and might be a punishable offence. But since Bitcoin isn't a company or a trademark, and altcoins are regulated more loosely, people can do all sorts of things.
Those who say Bitcoin and Bficoin can be told apart are correct, but it's the same with Adidas and Abibas/Adibas, and yet the latter is frowned upon if not considered illegal.

Not that I see it was a trick but a person can read and know Bitcoin, it is impossible he got fooled into investing in other projects that he presume it was also Bitcoin. I'm not sure if newbies would still fall into a such thing because I know that they are also doing research prior to investing in crypto. If someone will invest bfiCoin, it was their choice, not because they'll think that they are still investing in Bitcoin. If that could be a mistake, I don't know if they were able to read it carefully or not.

Just leave him with his stance because no matter how you explain it, he still won't accept it. I guess he doesn't know much about crypto so he assumes that bitcoin is not real and bficoin is real. You can't force him to believe even to make him realize his mistake. But you can still explain to him that what he believes is wrong and bficoin is not bitcoin.

You will see what will happen to him and if it is later proven, you should not blame him because he is against you; it will only prolong the problem. He will regret not doing what you say when he realises his mistake.

~snip~

This is how the young generation can easily get detracked because of a lack of knowledge. I was really sad to see people don't want to accept reality or even research.

Yeah I agree, nowadays young people are really easy to be tricked by small differences. Maybe he insists to say that Bitcoin because he sees the potential of that coin  Tongue Maybe surpassing Bitcoin? Well, the difference between that coin and Bitcoin is already visible, its name, its price, its popularity, etc.

There are many people in crypto today who don't recognize the Bitcoin logo well. And they get cheated by seeing the logo of fake bitcoin and investing. Now it is seen that there are various advertisements using the name of Bitcoin, there are many unknown people who invest in what they think is Bitcoin. Eventually they get scammed so know well and invest carefully to avoid such scams.

many parties want to take advantage by deceiving other people, most of them use tricks with big profits so many people are tricked with big profits, even people are willing to spend money buying scam coins in the hope that they will get a profit in the future, therefore do not be careless in drawing conclusions, learn and understand so that you are not easily swayed by the lure of big profits.
It seems that since the past fraud with the aim of taking advantage at all costs has been carried out but since a few years it has gotten out of control. It's no longer unusual that at any time we can see the behavior of fraudsters in an increasing variety of ways, and it's surprising that many still experience this fraud.
new projects grow a lot by giving unfair profits and it should already be known that this is impossible, but there are still those who buy. when the coin was launched, the price was very worthless, not even a few ran away without a trace.
that's why now it's rarely seen and lonely with new projects because the response that wants to invest has been much reduced. hopefully in the future there will be a better movement like in 2017.
agree with you not to hesitate before buying to study and listen to information from other colleagues, so as not to draw conclusions and analyzes that are actually different from most of the others.

I don't know — but there's a clear distinction between bitcoin and bfiCoin. If a person doesn't see the difference between the two, then he's bound to lose money in this industry.

In 2017, I became interested in cryptocurrency and registered on the bitcointalk forum.

At that time, all crypto enthusiasts were discussing the upcoming bitcoin hard fork.  None of us was sure that Bitcoin (the first cryptocurrency) would not split into two equivalent coins, each of which could claim the title of Real Bitcoin.

Fortunately, this did not happen.  However, bitcoin clones have emerged, such as Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, and many others....

But in fact, there is only one bitcoin!  It's BTC!  All other bitcoins are impostors!

Especially if the coin is called BFICoin....
must be very careful with the selection of coins so as not to go wrong. bficoin is not bitcoin in cryptocurrency, don't let us get complacent, so we buy the wrong coin. the consequences are very fatal, it could happen that we will lose all of our capital. actually it's not difficult to find bitcoin, but for those who don't understand it, of course it will be difficult if you are not careful. many coins with the same name, but bitcoin is just 1 which is commonly called BTC

and he asked me if he should buy Bitcoin as it was advertised in PSL ?

He was of the view that since BFIC was advertised on national TV, it is a real coin and Bitcoin is just a clone or a scam.  Sad
He was not agreeing with me as he said if bitcoin was real, then it would have been showing at the PSL matches and not this coin.

LOL, but wow 😳.. you mean he said, "If Bitcoin was real, it should be advertised like Bficoin was?" That is to say, there are really people who are so badly unaware of Bitcoin. Even when I encounter some customers asking me some dumb questions about Bitcoin, I ask myself, Are these people in this world or are they from another planet? I guess the Bficoin project is probably supporting PLS; that's why it steadily gets advertised there. So you can start by explaining to your friend that the Bitcoin he took to be Bitcoin is just supporting PLS; that's why it gets advertised there; or if you know other reasons why, you can explain them to him. Make sure to let him know that the Bificoin is not the Bitcoin he thinks, and if he/she likes, he can listen to you or do what's on their mind, but already he has sought your advice on whether he should invest in the coin, so I hope you advise him not to buy that coin.

Bficoin seems to be a project developed in 2021; their Twitter page was created in 2021; the ATL and ATH of the coin were in the same year, 2021. So your friend has got to decide between Bitcoin and Bficoin who copied who; lol, that's just funny to me.

I cannot be one to argue about the validity of the known Bitcoin which is BTC, with someone who thinks otherwise or has a name that is thought to be real one.  My knowledge came from the need to diversify funds and seek better investment and profit earning platforms.
When I see or read of such shit coins that bears a semblance in name to the real deal, I just shake my head and empathize with those who might fall prey and loose their investment.
It is wise for persons to be able to properly identify logos and symbols too, incase the names might be confusing as is the case of your friend, OP.

They are not a fraud, lol. They weren't pretending to be any coins. Bificoin is the unusual name they choose. Obviously, it differs from Bitcoin. That your friend doesn't believe in you is plain foolish. Even he doesn't need to have faith in you because everyone can read. No worries if your friend actually purchased real Bitcoin and believes it to be bitcoin. It doesn't matter if he bought Bificoin, it's a altcoin. I don't understand how this might be confusing.

I think the main point is to misdirect the people and I know this type of abuse caters towards a certain type of audience and investor but this is just too funny. Imagine being fucked over by a letter exchanged and then switched out. You're basically phished by the project founders at that point. Then again, OP is right, newbies should always be wary not only of how they navigate across the internet but with whatever they put their money into as well. In cases like BFICoin there's the possibility you may mistake it for bitcoin or a different coin for a different bluechip crypto. Just proper awareness, knowledge, and common sense to avoid becoming a victim of things like these. Still though, if BFIcoin isn't a rugpull project I think the peeps who mistook it for bitcoin could still cash in on some profit after all.

I'm sorry but your friend doesn't seem very bright. He refuses to believe that Bitcoin is Bitcoin and thinks something called Bficoin is actually Bitcoin? Even after you explained it to him he still doesn't understand? No offense but your friend seems like the kind of person that isn't smart enough to invest his own money. Sounds like the kind of person that scammers love.

This type of thing happened plenty of times before, it happened in my nation as well. There was a scammer who was selling securities based on bitcoin, like you wouldn't be actually buying bitcoin, you would be buying what they claim worths one bitcoin, so technically speaking you would pay them a bitcoin worths money and they promise that if the price of bitcoin goes up, you can still cash out.

Obviously that was a ponzi, and that ended up being something quite terrible at the same time because people lost nearly 80 million dollars to that guy. These type of things happens all around the world and unfortunately not that uncommon for many people to fall for it.
