Ha, it would be quite the trollbox.  So many sockpuppets chattering amongst the organic shills and random person caught in the crossfire.  But I loved the Poloniex trollbox back in the day. Good days.

I started a private chat box for a few merit awarders and DTs. It is useful to have somewhere private for a few members to discuss some of the board features. It isn't used a great deal though.
What you're referring to is different, which is a private group chat. A chatbox on the other hand is really not required and it will mess up things around here. Chatboxes are meant for exchanges, websites other than forums etc.
Right now if you need to talk to someone thru the forum then you need to constantly refresh the message page in order to operatively respond soneone else's messages. If you concider it as a special forum feature then it is totally fine now. Otherwise even a small communication (like making a deal and inviting a 3rd party as an escrow) could take way more time just because you don't know if someone sent you a message or not.
What I was emphasizing was that, don't replace personal messages, let it be as it is. If people want a group chat feature, that's fine. Let these be totally seperate.

Why not replace a Personal Messages with a some kind of chat? The one with any kind of notifications (preferably also with sound). Chatting with someone could be really painfull here so asking someone for telegram sometimes is the only way to communicate efficiently.
This idea is even worse. Do not replace Personal Messages. This is a forum dude, not a social media website. You're here to discuss about things not to spread memes all across.

Voted No. Don't like the idea, this proposed chatbox will be full of spam and memes, like your ordinary Telegram or Slack group. Who'll moderate it? All moderators are pretty busy fighting spam and referral links. This forum already has so many features to implement, like notification about replies and sorting posts by merit count (not sure about this one though, usually OP get the biggest amount of merits and it is the first post anyway).

It's not that it would be full of spammers or ads and such, it's just that it's, to be honest, completely unnecessary. What would you need it for? You can post where ever you want and there's a pm system as well.

Well because technically that would mean the entire site would need to ditch the SMF engine and work on something that is custom built. Maybe a Flarum engine idk. Which means a lot of time and effort going into 'reinventing the wheel'. Which to me sounds like a complete waste.

But yes, I do think an additional chat system where only people with high merit could speak would be a good idea. I mean if the merit system works, then people with merit aren't those that spam anyway.

This idea is even worse. Do not replace Personal Messages. This is a forum dude, not a social media website. You're here to discuss about things not to spread memes all across.

What is a social media platform?
A place that lets you connect with people you like.
A place that lets you share ideas, discuss, debate about something of common interest.
A place that lets people collaborate to create something new.
A place that lets you troll around and shit post memes.

What does this forum do?

A place that lets you connect with people you like. - Like connecting with peeps here about Bitcoin?
A place that lets you share ideas, discuss, debate about something of common interest. - Like new projects related to Blockchain and altcoins?
A place that lets people collaborate to create something new. - Again.. altcoins?? New sites ?? New services ?? In some cases ... new national regulations??
A place that lets you troll around and shit post memes. - Err.. Off topic board.

So on the contrary, you are socializing here, albeit and this forum is already a social media platform. So lets not live in denial.

But if a giant shit-magnet like that would keep the spammers occupied, it might make the main boards more pleasant to peruse.

Obviously I could be wrong, but is it worth considering?

Jaja. Yes, it could work like you say, and that's a great point, for maybe shitposters will be occupied on the chatroom instead on some boards in here. Nevertheless, I still consider it to be a bad desition:
1.- Because, despite all the features against external links and so, this can be a great place for scammers, merit traders, etc to be in communication.
2.- If so, they will be hard to track, due to the infinite lines of chats we are going to have to analyze.
3.- It will work as a bad image for the forum. A really bad one, for in this chat, I'm sure, there will be anything but dangerous and s**ty stuff.
4.- Mods are occupied enough already, and it seems -to me- unwise to open another place, because, eventually, it will need to be moderated yes or yes (in order to maintain clean the forum image).

I believe the last thing we all need is a new scammers tool.

I think it's not a good idea because you can't control huge amount of people single handly. So more moderator's will be needed to do this job.Again, if you allow only member and above that doesn't make the amount of people smaller. And we already have message option for chat so I don't think it's a good idea. The forum looks good till now, I don't think any more feature is needed for now.

That's not necessary, some people who are in the forum have made their own group and discuss anything about the forum. For example bounty, trading and ico, i've seen groups like that. So why should we keep make moderators more busy who are already so busy with this forum. Inside groupchat itself has many uses that outline everything about what is tranding in the forum.

My initial reaction was the same as nearly everyone else, bad idea, would attract spam and bot abuse, etc.  But then, from another angle, would it potentially mean less spam on the main boards?

No, it won't.
People spam there to gain activity and to make the required post for their bounties.
Nobody is spamming just for fun, they are doing out of interest, the only place that might be affected is the Altcoin ANN sub forum where bumping services might see a decline if the chatroom gets popular.

But overall it's going to be nearly impossible to moderate those rooms, we don't have enough mods for the forum, how are we going to deal with another headache?
Also, for serious private discussions we have whatsapp and telegram, which are far better than a built in chat room.

The chatbox could almost be a kind of "spam flypaper".  Obviously there should be a button so we don't have to subject ourselves to the horrors contained within, but if it helps to move the shitposts away from where I have to read them, maybe there's some upside to the idea.  Don't waste time moderating it, just disable clickable links for security.  It's not like it's going to produce any worthwhile content.  But if a giant shit-magnet like that would keep the spammers occupied, it might make the main boards more pleasant to peruse.

Obviously I could be wrong, but is it worth considering?

//EDIT:  Nah, still a bad idea.  Initial instinct was the right one.

It's useful for private conversations between trusted sub-groups. These can be unmoderated, and not on public display.

This will be nonsense afterall, the forum was design to interact each other through someone's topic so the communication was involved in this forum without your idea.

Why? Messages its better for me than chatbox, it will bring more spammer. Even it need to become jr.member and must have merit, its still not good. Based on what i read on reputation section, there's a lot older (or we called senior member) got caught because having a lot alts and some of them can easily trade merit or send merit to their alt's and boom, spammer has spawn on chatbox!
Even they get negative trust, they can still spamming, even if they got ban by moderator or admin, they still have another account to spam or create new one.
Why we need chatbox on forum? Huh People just easily start discussion on chatbox and discussion thread will be useless or not touched by any member.

I voted "NO" this is not the first time I saw a post like this and all of them fail why???

Because members of this forum or community have a high privacy and they dont want to be bothered by millions of chats everyday especially admin's/mod's/ and others.

The idea will just cause SPAM.

I agree to you sir. In addition chatting can be dangerous to your account, there are so many people uses a flowery words to not to spam but to SCAM others. Chatbox in forum is not a good idea.

Seriously you need a chatbox on a forum? It is ridiculous. If you want to fend off trolls, create a self-mod topic and have your discussions. You can make your own rules in some threads and if users don't follow your rules in that, they can even get banned apparently. Seriously, ditch the chatbox idea.

I started a private chat box for a few merit awarders and DTs. It is useful to have somewhere private for a few members to discuss some of the board features. It isn't used a great deal though.
