Yes I too agree with you that the America should not provoke the Norkor and instead help countries near China to stop them building facilities on the place they did not own. China was making its modern way of invasion to expand their territory. They are using their manpower and wealth to do invasion as maybe they are lacking resources right now to feed its people. But will Trump amicable in talking with this case as the US owe China big time.
The Americans must quickly build military bases in the islands which are currently under the control of allied nations such as the Philippines. Also, they need to provide quality weapons to these nations. The US can also consider helping India, which is currently having strained relations with China.
It's too late now. China has already completely reclaimed several shallow islets and many of them now have runways as well as space for missile launchers. America trying to get in there could make the situation more unpredictable.
It also doesn't help that the Philippines is pretty much the only ally US have in there among the claimants. American presence there could be used by China to drive a wedge between ASEAN claimants, further preventing them from coming up with a concerted action to stop Beijing's cabbage patch from overgrowing the entire area. For example, Vietnam could be suspicious of increased American presence, considering their history.
ASEAN did came up with a harsher than expected statement against the Chinese causing tension in the region, which was surprising considering China have its chum Cambodia in the bloc. (ASEAN operates by consensus, meaning only once member disagreeing can throw off everything.)
