It's better if you ask them. I don't know if they want people posting it publicly.

Are there any plans for updating Electrum plugin and making it easier to use for newbies
There is a plan for that but there is no roadmap or ETA.

maybe adding app for hardware wallets like Ledger or Trezor?
That would be amazing, even if not supported fully by manufacturers of hardware wallet devices.
Hardware wallets use seeds to generate private keys. You cannot import private key into hardware wallet - it is impossible to use them to keep ChipMixer chips private keys.

You mean publishing their own app for Ledger/Trezor devices like the native wallet app? Not sure that's even possible since you'd probably need to work with the developers. Pretty sure they will sway away from thing like this too.

The current set up for me is quite easy to learn, not to mention sometimes plug-in make it even harder for newbies to use it.

Electrum plugin was made as a concept to be integrated with Electrum but Electrum programmers were afraid that mixer integration is bad for their reputation.
As it is - plugin is hard to install and ugly. But it works and has quite a few users.

The Electrum plugin was discontinued due to low interest.

Limited in number. Limitless in potential.

Chipmixer electrum plugin? never heard that before. Where did you find that plugin? I can't find this on their announcement or website.

Edit: OH, Found it. Regarding the api, I guess you should ask it to their team or on their ann thread instead
