For a newbie, i think it is not recommendable to use altcoin for trading. Always remember new altcoins are very risky. More investment and time is needed.
This is right if you want to trade but you are still inexperienced it is better that you stay on the most liquid pairs, do not get into anything exotic or you run the risk of losing most of your money very fast especially at this time since the markets have moved like crazy in last weeks.

I still hold XEL in Bittrex, its exciting movement. Two days I did not stop monitoring some coins in Bittrex. Stable and clear coins provide great advantages such as RLC, TRST, BAT and many more. Prepare coffee to keep track of the price. 
i only hold bat in my bittrex but i think there is more coins that will profitable for middle and long term because i see in bittrex, there is many altcoin that is jump so quickly and i think its good to make big profit if we buy the right coins. i think rlc is a good enough to be hold because the trend is also good like bat and xel, maybe if xel is down, i will buy and hold like you too.

You should update frequently about newly introduced coins into the market for example BQX. Usually the coin has a pretty good exchange rate. Provided that there should be able to see the exchange rate that has a good quality. If for trading altcoin better short term. Substitute ETH, BCC, LTC, Etc.
You can go to the coinmarketcap site and pick out large and decreasing coins to trade
If I were going to choose, I would choose the best altcoin for trading because my target is the increasing value of 1 token. If the value of 1 token is high I will trade the half amount of my token so that the remaining token will reserve for another high value, I know that the values of altcoins was also fluctuating same as the behavior of bitcoin. I think $NEO is one of the most hot new altcoin. Last 2 month ago it was almost 2/3$ and now it's value up down between 40/50$. 
are you a beginner? No stable coin in the crypto world every second can change that I know. But if you want to decrease the risk of defeat you choose bitcoin why should allcoin.
If you want to fold your account more than once, then find a good coin and do not pump
If i would be able to invest in only one coin i would take Viacoin, great community support, good developer and great project. Everything that is needed to be on the top. I hope that some day this coin will pump up to the moon and i would be right in my desicion

I'll give you an option to choose the first altcoin I want to introduce is monero, second is Zcash, and third is ethereum. Those three altcoins are not stable in price but they are good to trade. All altcoin price fluctuate so you might have a good choice when to trade. Trade your altcoin when the price increase.
