I am an archaic man in this sense. I have still not left Bitcoin Core personally, and some paper wallets. I have no idea how all those online services work except the blockchain.info wallet.

Same here, but been looking into HD wallets. I think those are the future, the improvement in privacy make them superior to any other wallets. Love Armory and Electrum for non-main storage.

What would be the benefits of running this wallet? As far as I can see from the images on the Play Store it seems to be a Bitcoin wallet but I'm only seeing $$. Is this the direction we are headed? Using USD instead of BTC?

I was aware of Circle a couple of months ago, still to try out their app.  I currently use Coinbase but have not used their android app yet, there was somebody yesterday talking about some security flaw of the Coinbase android app but didn't go into too much detail,  I think there was only a flaw if you were running an old version of android.
My point is I think as we are still in the early days of Bitcoin adoption it will take a good bit of time before we have a 100% secure android app if at all.  Keeping large amounts in cold storage is probably the best way to go for now.

It took me like 90 minutes to get fully set up with the app due to my pokey smartphone. Not really usable for real-world transactions. But at this point that's not what bitcoin is for.

I don't use mobile wallets/apps to deal with bitcoin, I simply HODL in cold storage as I have no intention to spend any of my stash but those are pretty impressive numbers.
It shows more & more people are migrating into bitcoin which makes me happy.
Maybe in a few years Circle might hope to have 500,000 people using the app.
Continued growth is key for Circle & bitcoin as a whole & I'm confident they'll/we'll achieve it.

I need to update my phone non-compat device
That said its nice to see its getting a good amount of downloads although people are complaining about the qr code being honored.
And some people just went for the promo but they have to spend the $5 one way or another  Grin

A number of 1 star reviews for the verification process. But many 5 star ones for good user interface.

It dosen't really mean anything , probably most of them aren't really using Bitcoin and just used it while their promotion and when they were giving 5$ for free or some people simply abused that offer . Last time I heard on TV Bitcoin users number was 250k so I'am pretty sure not that there is a lot less then 50k who are using Circle .

wasn't it circle that was giving away $5 worth of bitcoin to everyone to attract user to itself?

if the 10,000 50,000 downloads are related to their promotion it doesn't show anything about the popularity or anything about the service. it shows that so many people got $5

actually many were from the same account, there was a large abusing in that promotion, i would not be surprised if from those 50k only 1000-10k are legit

It's great that they had so many downloads but I don't think they gained this many users, they had a $5 download giveaway running as already mentioned and most people might have used their friends/relatives mobiles to download the app and get the $5 bitcoin and they might have deleted the app just after receiving the BTC, unless ofcourse Circle attached some conditions with it. Were the users able to withdraw the $5 in bitcoin to their other wallets??

this is a great app does anyone else have a list of Bitcoin applications for mobile?

Just enter bitcoin in the store search and you'll find many bitcoin related apps but you wouldn't find much use of them.

True but you have to admit that it was a brilliant way to promote it.  They must have spent a ton on this promotion but it appears that it gained them some traction.  If they have goldman money, then they are bankrolled by the usa taxpayers.  This puts them in a good position to take risks like this promotion.

Why do you think there not to be trusted?  They just got a investment from goldman sachs.
As what I think, trust needs time to build. I personally don't trust some new things (just like my attitude to bitcoin before I join the community - I think bitcoin must collapse soon and there is no value to bitcoin, but now it is reverse). Only old things that got reputation will be trusted by me.

...

I have an iPhone, and am perfectly happy with the BTC app, easy to use, by blockchain.info.  I believe that blockchain.info has an app for Android too.

I keep a small balance there, as I do not consider my smartphone "secure".

I've heard on this forum that, they were giving away $5 bitcoin to new users (but it seems to be stopped now). However it don't support my place. Also, since it quite new and not being so trusted now (maybe), I won't prefer using it. I would use some trusted online wallets or the original bitcoin wallet app if I need to use my coins in my phone.
