WTHA1: is in the northern hemisphere, likely south of 60 degrees north, north of 22 degrees north. That rules out Africa.

WTHA2: is closer to the equator, the only visible shaddows appear to exgagerated by the nearby creakbed. I Estimate summer, between 0 degrees north and 45 degrees north.

WTHA3: No visible shadow detail, hint given is "south america"

WTHA4: Cloud shadows suggest morning near the equator, likey between 30 degrees south/north. Hint was "Africa", my analysis narrows it to north Africa.

WTHA5: Shadow detail is hard to see; appears to be another morning image. Hint was Asia. I think I can narrow it to between 22 south and 45 north, which eliminates most of Russia.

PS: voted both "Yes" and "No" in the poll Smiley

I think your shadow information is irrelevant...can you explain it further?

WTHAI 1: Sri Lanka
WTHAI 2: Malaysia  Close!
WTHAI 3: Brazil  No
WTHAI 4: Nigeria  Ùú
WTHAI 5: China 没有

Remember that correctly naming the country doesn't mean you've won. You must supply a pulled back image, thereby showing that there's a definite match.

What 4 update: Looking at a globe, the equator actually runs through the middle of africa. Phinnaeus Gage was being nice when he narrowed it to "North Africa".

You know what I like about you, Chad? The effort you're putting into this. Believe you me, if I wanted to be nice, I would give better clues.

I found the shadow detail in WTHAI 3: you can see it around valleys and that depression that may indicate the mountain is a volcano. I now estimate 45 degrees south +-30. If it is in brazil, it would have to be the southern half. My guess: Chile Argentina.

Edit: Chile appears to be too mountianous for WTHAI3.

WTHAI 5... I can see ghosts of location names but can't make them out! Sad

That's indicative of all Google Map Images when one zooms in. The words seen should have nothing to do with the image, otherwise this would be an easier contest. I believe all the text is the same and reads '2011 Google'.

Thank you for bringing it to everyone's my attention, ineededausername.

Time for WTHAI 5: Guess the location within the first hour and win 20 BTC. Guess the location during the following 23 hours after the first hour, and win 10 BTC.

Major clues for all 5 images:

  • 1. Is located on an island.
  • 2. Also located on an island.
  • 3. Located in South America.
  • 4. Located in Africa.
  • 5. Located in Asia.

CLUE TIME!

Two locations of the first four images can be found on islands.

Stay tuned for that forth image, coming shortly.

Okay, then #3 is Cahokia Mounds in Southern Illinois.

#2 is Wales

#1 is Poland

And #4 is micro-photography of a stomach lining after eating that many cookies!

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Cahokia Mounds is close. Exactly which mound? And if you found it, provide an image to show proof of work. Remember, this is just meant for the sake of argument.  Wink

WTHAI #1: Ireland.

WTHAI  #2: Ethiopia or Eritrea or Somalia

WTHAI #3: Argentina

WTHAI #4: An undisclosed location in the desert near Las Vegas, on a movie set before the alleged Apollo lunar landing module footage was added- notice that utter lack of stars in the "nighttime sky". Some sources believe the set was constructed inside Building #208 at Groom Lake, although this has long been denied by the US Government. A far less supported belief, but one much closer to the truth, is that the set was actually built underground on the border of Area 52, one quarter of a mile from the run-out of Deadman Wash, and is accesses through a simple "Observation Post" know at Station 700.

But I have no specific knowledge of any of these things.

I'm almost certain you got #4 exactly correct, although it wasn't part of the contest because RandyFolds tried to hijack this thread. See if he will give you the 10 BTC prize before he spends it on another pallet of Oreos. And if he doesn't, may I suggest you get out one of those alien probes and... On second thought, forget that idea.

WTHAI 4:

Why is it always the fat guy that knows how I think?

Now I need to make another rule stating that all guesses are to be of locations found only on Earth, unless RF sets on me and I scream, "Uncle!"

Nice post! Here's a cookie!

Oh, I thought this meant that you were not allowed to name a continent.

WTHAI 1: Congo
WTHAI 2: Asia
WTHAI 3: Asia

I was just about to pen a new rule when I refreshed this page and read your post. I dearly hope this doesn't create any controversy, but the guesses that name continents will be ignored. Otherwise, we'll have people guessing hemispheres. I'm going to pen Rule 12 now.
