I am not at all surprised that from time to time someone asks such questions, because new people who come to the forum are obviously under the strong influence of social networks where "like" is something completely normal. Maybe it wouldn't even be a bad idea even on the forum, although it shouldn't be highlighted in any special way, it would just be an indicator that members like a post, and considering that sMerits are not available to everyone, maybe "like" button" would be small but useful addition to the forum. If we want to attract young people, we obviously have to give them some features that are obviously important to them.

~snip~
If you want to show gratitude, you can just quote the reply and say Thank you, it's done.

Quoting the entire post to just write "thank you" is a very bad idea in my opinion, especially if you do it several times in the same topic. It would be appropriate to make multiquotes of all the posts to which thanks refer and edit them - but we cannot expect such a way of communication from all members.

This thread has been discussed before Would it be possible if there was some kind of like button?

so many times wish i could hit the like button in every educating post i come across, to show gratitude towards the op, and also shows how relevant a particular post/reply is
It's nothing different with "merit".

Even though merit is given for high quality post, but some people can freely give their merit without taking "quality" as the consideration. So, if you think the post that receive a lot merit is very insightful or informative, that's not necessary correct. It's better for people to read the whole reply than just read the merited post.

If you want to show gratitude, you can just quote the reply and say Thank you, it's done.

Like button is not necessary.
The uniqueness of the forum is the difference it has from other forum, and that is in the merit system. Like buttons are common with other forum, and can just be easily given, but not with merits. Because it is not easy to earn merits, it is not easy to give, and when some people in forum earn merits, before that person will give you their smerits, it means they really like what you have shared in your post.
In the first few months of joining this forum, I also thought like the OP that if there could be a " like button" to posts, that it'll be fine, so members can appreciate a post that they feel is quality, even if they don't have merit to give the post. But I soon realized that it'll probably never happen, as the merit system is a unique feature of the forum, to make it stand out from social media sites like Facebook. One of the reasons why I think that " like buttons " is not necessary in this forum is because members might start to be giving unnecessary likes to posts, even the ones that don't deserve it, thereby spamming the forum with too many likes.

I get where you're coming from but a "like" button or anything similar is totally unnecessary. If you do not have enough merits to give and you see a merit-worthy post, someone has already suggested you report the post to any of the merit-awarding threads, that way you can help the post get more attention and more merits.
Having merits as the only things that can be used to appreciate a post is okay. What makes it perfect is the fact that you need those merits, together with your activity on the forum to rank up. In my opinion, this makes it a balanced system. Your work and contributions on the forum decide your rank. Then there's the fact that you have to receive merits, to be able to give out merits. Except anything better comes up in the future, the system is perfect the way it is, for now at least.

giving out merit might be a little bit difficult as there are limitations to that, so many times wish i could hit the like button in every educating post i come across, to show gratitude towards the op
You can show your gratitude towards OP for good contributions by Meriting it or by Writing your post with appreciation and with your thinking to improve OP's contribution and even just share your thinking that can be helpful for OP.

Meriting a helpful post if you have sendable merit.
If you don't have sendable merit, you can write a post to say thank you or you can bookmark that post on your browser, come back later and merit it.

Merit is like a Like button in bitcointalk.

I think a “thank you for xxx” will suffice in such situations. You can bookmark the post so you can go back to it later when you have merits. You should probably move this topic to meta. If you had used the forum search engine, you would have found that this is not the first time this topic has been discussed on the forum:

Op, I just did a quick search to dig up one of my early posts which expressed exactly what you have done in OP. Now I'll place both posts below, we will read both and try to deduce something from them.

As a newbie, I read many posts that has quality. After reading the posts I'll feel like to merit the post, but as a newbie, I might not have a sendable merit, I will have no option than to slide on.
Assuming there is an alternative to merit just like "Facebook like" along side merit, it would favour me.

Atleast if I don't have merit to give, I will just click like and move on pending when I'll have merit to award the user.
This proposed "like" might likely not be used by admins, or neither shall it determine ranking, but it should just be a mere appreciation for a quality post when merit is lacking.

During my time spent in the forum, i've received some replies to my post and i've read many informative post which help guide my navigation through the forum, giving out merit might be a little bit difficult as there are limitations to that, so many times wish i could hit the like button in every educating post i come across, to show gratitude towards the op, and also shows how relevant a particular post/reply is, (i.e from a wide range of reply, a reader and easily skim and scan a post and get informed in no time through the engagements a particular reply have).

Lesson to be learnt;
  • Always use search function to be sure you are not trying to discuss what has been discussed several times in the past.
  • theymos is reluctant of making any merit related changes. If you were here 2018, according to some people, you will appreciate the merit system.

I don't think we will have a like button in the future since this is not a social media like Facebook or Twitter other forums have this option and it's unlimited but here like others said you can only give likes or thanks to someone who contributes by giving merit the only problem is if you are a newbie you can't able to give merit unless you earn merit and earning merit is a bit difficult if you are new in crypto.

The only thing that I could share is to keep posting, contributing, be active, and keep posting informative and helpful posts because that's the only thing I really see working if merit sources found your post informative and helpful I'm sure you'll get what you looking for.

You can report any merit worthy posts to this thread [[self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source]

I don't think the like button or upvote button will be added. I believe this has been suggested a few times.

That is the reason the merit system was created. But the limitation of the merit system is that you have to earn merits before you can send half of the merits that you earned as smerits. Like button is not necessary. Have quality posts, receive merits and send some smerits.
