I'm also pretty interested in building some sort of CPU mining machine with ~50 cores. Does anyone know of a detailed guide or place to find information on this?

I think its funny how many of the first comments were like uh GPU* pls. Lol.

Erm, what you ganna do with so much CPU? I mean which coins are you going to mine?

There are several fairly lucrative coins that are coming out of the woodwork and have serious memory limitations, this is what makes gpu/ASIC mining almost impossible.

I am using the term lucrative very loosely and I will most likely be losing money but its more for the experience and fun.

Get yourself a Dell C6100 system, pretty awesome set-up.

I got 3 of them for Primecoin mining.

I think he means GPUs not CPU.

You can generally run 4 video cards per motherboard.

Milk crates are the cases of choice.

Well if he wanted GPU, the most motherboard can support is 8 GPU (or more if you use some splitter)... not 4 Smiley

Which motherboard can do this? I thought the limit is only 6 GPUs.

I have seen motherboard that can support 7 GPU, on a Z677-GD65 motherboard....

I have a bunch of Sunfire e4200s ( which are 16 Ultrasparc Vs ) each.

I had thought about setting these up for Mining , the only Linux Distro with support seems like Gentoo.

Wondered if anyone had thought about doing a Quick Solaris type software , for a Bounty Smiley

Just over a year ago I had fantasies about buying a Sun T1000 server for mining (with ~100W TPD). $17,000k new price kind of scared me away though (though much cheaper used). I also worked out how loud 50dB is Tongue

Not worth it anymore with ASICs coming on line though. Currently I am try to build my servers with commodity hardware.

I have 16.5 TH/s in Asic power right now , but I thought they weren't any good for the Alt Coins ? Atleast the ones with good profit ? Or am I mistaken.

--- The sunfires are all mine, just sitting there , part of an older HW cycle ( used as Industrial art in conference room right now ) I'd love to find something that might doable. I could bring them online at a Wind Farm as well where I have access to Excess power at cost Smiley

Server grade motherboards can fit 4 cpus, like these

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon7000/#2011

For more cpu I think you have to look at mainframe architectures

these are some pretty sexy motherboards!! they look like they are designed for a 4u rack thou

I'd be looking at Socket-G34 Opeterons.  You can get 12-core Magny-Cours chips on ebay for maybe $300 ea, and new dual-socket boards on newegg for maybe $400.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Magny-Cours-6176-SE-2-3GHz-12M-Socket-Socket-G34-OS6176YETCEGO-/130876952518

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131643

You'll need a few other things of course, like RAM, a good quality power supply, etc.

You're planning to mine Primecoins with this, yes?

yep think you can even get 4 socket boards for the G34 range so youd have 48 cores all together. if your just mining and want to keep it basice then either a AM3+ Bulldozer or the newer intels

if its primecoin AMD are better for long stings (which pay better) or intel for shorter stings (font pay as much but you can do more)

Starting to become more and more interested in CPU mining...

Say I wanted to set up some sort of mining rig with 10 or so CPU's, what would I need?  I'm not too tech savvy but I'm getting there and am always up for a challenge.

Thanks in advance.  If there are threads out there links are appreciated as well.

For Alts...not BTC... (please, no lectures about return)
Learn from folding.

Use GPUs. You want as many cores as possible. I have 5 custom built computers with a 4390K + 4x780s (professionally assembled). That's the most PPD you can get today. Each cranks out half million points per day folding. If your interested in something like that, PM me and I can send you some pics.

Why don't you post it here? I want to see it, too.

OK. I'll do that this evening.

You can read more about how I optimized my machines for folding on the folding forum. They also have some really smart guys at HardForum that know how to max out your CPU and GPU computing.

seriously, if you want to mine as hobby, maybe but if you are chasing the profit, GPU is not going to return anything, unless you are using the Office Computers or servers at work  Smiley
