I would have been a victim if it was 2017, I had some token there then. What can the goverment agency and NZ police do in situations like this, I think internet fraud happen from any part of the world except they have prior information of an insider capable of doing it. We have not heard anything from the site asides the announcement which does not indicate any form of refund or compensation. The link still shows some fund still transferred today, How could that be if the site was shut down yesterday?

Even large exchanges can be hacked down by irresponsible parties especially with small exchanges of what their strength is? Is this a team or security ticket that is not strong? may need to really plan which exchanges are safer.

We haven't seen a hack attack in a long time. However, Cryptopia is an experienced exchange. I can't figure out how accurate it is to rely on anyway. I never trust that exchange.
even cryptopia are experience in trading platform, no system is safe, if they're system are good how about the human error
but i never store my fund in cryptopia anymore

This is my first time that an exchange was supposed to be hacked where i have some port polio in it. Honestly i am scared right now on losing my money on that exchange. Does anybody here know on what would be the future of our money on that exchange if it is true that it was hacked?

Same here. I've seen many hacks but it never happened to me before. Good thing is that most of the funds are stored off exchanges. Sooner or later any exchange can be hacked. That's why I only exchange on exchanges but store in wallets.

I heard that this exchange was hacked. Today, every time the situation that would really concern the exchanges and hacking begins to resemble cases when the exchanges are breaking into themselves in order to collect the necessary amount of funds.

Can you explain?

What can we expect. Every month there are new exchanges. Which do not meet the high standards of protection. Hackers, of course, are young, they skilfully find frays in such exchanges. The losses will not be big. Since this may lead to a further fall in cryptocurrency prices.

Unless bigger exchanges are hacked all together resulting in a BTC loss over 100k BTC, market won't have any fault because of this kind of hacks.

This is no more 2014. Luckily.

You can't say it is no more 2014. It was mt.gox that hacked.

If you think they were the market leader at that time, it would be like binance hack. And that would crash the markets a lot.

Mt.Gox was the leader in FIAT to BTC exchange markets so it affected so heavily the ecosystem of Bitcoin. Hack of Binance would result in "yet another crypto to crypto exchange". Hacking Binance alone won't cause panic dump such the Mt.Gox related ones.

1) possible exit scam under the excuse of an hack: in this case the service in unlikely to come back online and your funds are very likely to be lost forever.
If this would be the case then i lost my money on that exchange. I just have to learn my lesson on not to leave my tokens/coins on CEX.

Is there a chance that this would happen to Binance also?

This is the type of thing that makes everyday people scared to use crypto. Hopefully Cryptopia has the resources to make this right and can patch up holes in its security.

So if a Bank get robbed shouldn't be the same thing for FIAT money users?

Remember that I've register an account on cryptopia 1 year ago, that time I just used for trading non popular tokens, after that withdrawal all the assets and don't use it anymore, just wait for them update on the situation, fortunately hackers can't sold the funds anymore because binance has frozen some of the funds that were stolen from cryptopia.

Cryptopia is old exchange and i used it acouple years already, and this first times they get hacked. I have ECA and DAPS coin on that exchange, i believe the team of cryptopia will solve this issue soon and will be give good information update for all their user. But with this bad news did not make big effect to the crypto market, the price of Bitcoin just going down abit and going up again.

On the 14th January 2019 cryptopia exchange suffered a security breach and got hacked.

Still no news have been released about the entity of this loss, both in terms of financial amounts and personal informations.

This thread will follow the events.

Help to collect informations posting here if you have details about the things going on.

really we cannot blame the hacker that cryptopia's security is not good. That is why we really need to choose wisely when choosing an exchange, my first choice is binance. Binance can be able to track the hacked coins/tokens. Hats off to them.

Wow, this made me realize that I have some random alts on there that I had forgotten about.
They are mostly shitcoins, so no big loss.
But I went through a stage where I was collecting funny shitcoins just for kicks and cryptopia was the best place to get my hands on them.
I'm pretty sure I had a bunch of Nyancoin on there lol.

But on the serious side, this is another sobering reminder about how risky leaving things on an exchange are.
Cryptopia is a New Zealand company, as such they reported to the New Zealand authorities.
...yeah, the chances the hackers are in New Zealand are like .00000001%.

And yes, we have the blockchain explorer and can track the movements of the crypto.
But beyond that, nothing.

I use cryptopia, but I do not hold my fund in it. Most times, after trading, I withdraw, because right from onset,I have always had the notion that exchanges are not safe if keeping funds, since the security of some of then is porous and liable to attacks by hackers.

I have a lot of issues with them in the past, mainly from support and transactions that take days to confirm. Cryptopia is being beaten by the new exchanges that offered lower fee and cheap listing the only reason I'm here are from a few coins I'm holding that I can only trade here.

Well, I had problems with support system of almost every exchange and I remember that in the middle of the last bullrun Cryptopia was one of the hottest Crypto to Crypto exchanges out in the market.

Also I thought Cryptopia would have ended in a exit scam much before than now (not affirming that they got an exit with this happening) but they instead went ahead operating the exchange such for long time.

I hope for everyone who had coins in it to regain access to the coins as soon as possible!
