You have mention the above characteristics of the crypto steel but what about RUST ? Is there any guarantee that it can get rust ?
Are you familiar with the basics of chemistry? How do you imagine rust forming on stainless steel?
I may not be familiar with the basics of chemistry but can you prove that rust does not form on stainless steel?
Here is an image of a rusted steel bolt so does that not show that what feel is safer may not be safe as you speculate?
Let's say I like to be rational because everything that has advantages also has disadvantages, but the so called reason for asking such question in the first place to reduce the illusion created around crypto steels.
May be everyone likes to agree to ideas but I disagree with some ideas to make sure we disagree and then agree on one thing to make a fact solid.
@m2017 you may be more experienced than I am in the forum but have you considered the person behind the name and the rank in the forum? A professor could be making a point but because his low in rank does not mean he or she doesn't know what his saying. Boiling down to the end of the matter one can by such act of disagreeing make others go to make more research and find a more safer ways to safe guiding one's BTC hence not just relaying on one proclaim solution.

Even when kept in a stuffy place it can get heat and by contacting with each surface can get rusted.
Then don't store in a stuffy place and fill the cryptosteel container with machine oil or something like that (not flammable). If you don't know, rust (oxide) forms when it comes into contact with oxygen (the oil will prevent this from happening).
Okay you finally agree that stainless steels could get rust but can be prevented with oil So what exactly brought out the idea of applying oil to the cryptosteel to prevent rust? was it not my low experienced question ?. Hope you see the prove of what I'm trying to impact rationality makes a fact solid.

Am very fascinated by such discovery, because up until now, I have not known of a hardware or manual means to safely store seed phrases or passwords without being bothered by close friends or relatives stealing them or hackers or disaster wreaking damage.
How then have you been storing your seed phrase, do you use a self custodial wallet? And if you do, how do you make backups of your seed phrase, or don't you. It is either you write your seed phrase down on paper or you use solutions like engraving it on a stainless steel or securing it with washers.
i saw cryptosteel wallet first time so that i have no idea how it works, looks like it's a offline back up,
but still i haven't figured out what the advantages or disadvantages to use this key back up storage.
Cryptosteel is not a wallet, it is a backup method for BTC. It is an offline backup and it should not take you time to find out how to use it if you get one. The advantages of using this method of back up is that it is offline, it is resistant to humidity and other stuffs that may destroy your paper back up, like flood and fire.

Farewell LEO o_e_l_e_o
It's my first time seeing a cold storage wallet like that, which, when I look at it, looks like a screw. I wouldn't think it's a storage wallet. What is that? Is it only for Bitcoin, or are there other options for others? cryptocurrency like Ethereum, Binance, and others?

What the OP is showing is steel for storing the seed phrase of an address generated from a wallet, not a wallet for storing coins.
Each steel circle that has been printed and circular on the bolt contains letters starting from A - Z.

Users who have a wallet can make each letter in one set match the seed phrase. Offline seed storage media like this provide strong security and are recommended over storing online. The steel in question is not only for Bitcoin, users who store other coins such as Ethereum can also arrange each letter according to their seed phrase.
OP can correct me if I'm wrong.

For the OP, has this steel gone through a testing process such as how long is it fire resistant in the event of a fire? How heavy would it be if there was a flood? Can it be carried away by the strong current of the flood?

This crypto steel looks more medieval or ancient than recent technology or craft and it's a wonder how you stumbled upon it and from the post already, it seems like punching in the words wouldn't be as much difficult and stressful as may be the first thoughts of a newbie who is in possession of this crypto steel.

My question and what I’m curious about this device is that, if lost, is there a way you can track it back to where it is? Like maybe a sensor in it that can make you to locate it easily if you’ve misplaced it and don’t know exactly where you kept it?
Lol, nope, stainless steel is an offline storage that shouldn't have any network connection. Do not lose your seed phrase and if you have good opsec you should always know where you kept it. Take note that you should have more than one backup of your seed phrase and if you ever lose one backup, consider it that the wallet has been compromised and you should sweep your funds immediately into another wallet.

The functionality of this device is very commendable and one that every bitcoiner should have in their possession to store their seed phrase in them. My question and what I’m curious about this device is that, if lost, is there a way you can track it back to where it is? Like maybe a sensor in it that can make you to locate it easily if you’ve misplaced it and don’t know exactly where you kept it?

I was reading all the replies and have seen some advantages and also some drawbacks of this crypto steel seed phrase storer.
So in conclusion I learned that if we buy this and we will make a little mistake while keeping the alphabet plates. Meanse if we keep some plates wrongly so this can make issue. So we should store like this but important thing is that we should write seed phrase on a diary on a piece of paper. And this should be stored at most safer place.

Second one member also showed that this stainless steel can be melt at certain level of temperature. Or can be bend with heavy weight. So this should be safe at that place where the fire chances are zero.
By the way thanks for sharing and other members who just shared their thoughts regarding this topic and increase my knowledge.

I have gone through all of the posts of this thread including the OP but have not found this thing useful the way you promoted it. I won't say that it's totally useless but if someone unfortunately losses or or two letters out of the thing or makes that mistakes during saving of the seed phrase on it then the person most probably will end up losing his wallet.

I believe that this thing can be a good alternative for the ones who are scared of natural disasters or living things that can harm the seed phrases, but we can better make a sealed steal box and save inscribe our seed phrase on a steel or copper sheet and then save that cooper sheet inside that box. I think that will provide better security as compare to CryptoSteel's product.

The thing that scares me is how easy it would be lose one or more of the 96 little pieces of steel, or even just 24 pieces.
That is the inherent problem when working with a large number of physical pieces of something very small.

While handling them one or more could roll away somewhere, with or without you being aware of it, and become lost forever. Little objects have a tendency to do that. So you thought you had them all stacked and stored together, but one day when you go to retrieve your seed, you discover that one or more are actually missing.

To me it would be a lot safer to use a single or double steel plate with your words stamped on them. Simply punch the letters onto the plate.

1) You accidentally spelled one or more words wrong while sliding in the discs

2) You accidentally assemble one or more words in the wrong order.

3) While retrieving your seed phrase, you accidentally allow all the letters to slide out all at once into one big pile, making it impossible to reassemble your words. Which would be extremely easy to do.
There's stoppage on the end, so if you mistakenly slide the discs, it will not make you lose it and each word has a separator in order to make you not mix from one word to the next one. If you mistakenly place a wrong letter or order, then the fault was on you, not the tool.

Quote
It would make more sense to have each word on one disc, with a number on the disc indicating the order of the word,
so in case the discs get mixed up you will always have the correct order of the words.
Don't worry, @fillippone have created it for you Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers.

There are many tools to save your seed phrase, after all it doesn't mean you need to use all of them, just pick what you think is the best for you.

How does it work exactly? Each disc has one letter on it?

Screenshot of Cryptosteel:

That seems extremely tedious to manage. So you have to drop the letters in one by one?

Seems like a lot could go wrong here:

1) You accidentally spelled one or more words wrong while sliding in the discs

2) You accidentally assemble one or more words in the wrong order.

3) While retrieving your seed phrase, you accidentally allow all the letters to slide out all at once into one big pile, making it impossible to reassemble your words. Which would be extremely easy to do.

In either of these scenarios (especially 2 or 3) you are screwed as it would be impossible to put your seed phrase back together, which is the same as losing it.

It would make more sense to have each word on one disc, with a number on the disc indicating the order of the word,
so in case the discs get mixed up you will always have the correct order of the words.

Please tell me I am wrong about how it works? Because judging by the pictures on their website it looks like a not so good idea.

Binance is not a cryptocurrency, it is a cryptocurrency exchange.
So are you promoting it here on our forum? If I look at the image you gave, I can't really imagine that it can store Bitcoin, unlike other hardware wallets that look good physically.
You don't store your BTC in a steel, you engrave your seed phrase on it, it is another type of back up you can use, instead of using paper back up. You can use a hardware wallet and still engrave your seed phrase on a steel if you prefer this method to writing it down on paper.

The shot above is a cryptosteel, it can be used to safely and securely store bitcoin wallet seed phrases, as well as passwords, this device is made of 303 and 304 stainless steel, and it is both waterproof, fireproof and shockproof, it is one the best device to own as a bitcoiner and a crypto enthusiast.

The fact is there are varieties of ways yo keep your asset safe it all depends on own view, what can be safe for you might not be safe for me.

For newbies they can explore as many as they can in keeping there assets safe.

It's quiet not relevant to buy a cryptosteel for security and privacy when you don't even have enough bitcoin to secure. Lol  Smiley

Ummm did you see the part it is made from stainless steel? For the scope of this thread that isn't a problem.

Looks good but help me understand, so the seed phrases are going to be written on a copper or steel plate that shall be fit to that cryptosteel?

Am I understanding it correctly? Because in my understanding, based on the images the words are written on those circle tiles and it shall be there, right?

So on ledger shop it costs €82.50. Better to hear a personal experience from someone who owns it.

Metal Bitcoin Seed Storage Stress Test (Round III), with CryptoSteel
Cryptosteel Capsule review

Quote
Cryptosteel Capsule:

Claims to be extremely durable - fireproof up to 1400C/2500F. Shockproof. Waterproof. Stainless.

This was pretty easy to assemble other than the final retention pin, though unlike pretty much every other style of device it's fairly annoying to read back due to the orientation and spacing of the tiles. I also noted that it comes with a very large assortment of tiles, which makes it more versatile for potential use cases.

Performed admirably - I didn't even have any trouble reopening the capsule by hand.

No acid entered the capsule. Even if it had, I doubt any data loss would have occurred.

This was an interesting result. I gave it a 50/50 chance of bending and it held up pretty well to several tons of pressure, but eventually gave in a bit to my 20 ton press. The reason the result is interesting is that I didn't anticipate the consequences of bending the tube. Obviously the data inside is still intact, but how are we going to read it? Because the end of the rod is permanently affixed to the screw-on cap, it's now impossible to unscrew the device.

I don't have the tools on hand to attempt opening the device, but I expect you'd want to somehow cut through the tube just below where the threads of the cap end. But that's not all! Because there is only a retention clip on the opposite end of the rod, you'd then have to be extremely careful while pulling the rod out of the tube to ensure that the tiles don't fall off, causing data loss. Because this is clearly a suboptimal Schrödinger's cat type of situation with the potential for data loss, I feel the need to deduct a few points.

If I'm not mistaken, we have their ANN thread here, Cryptosteel: The Ultimate Cold Wallet Private Key Storage System.

But yeah, we understand the point of OP, specially that there have been issues lately about hacks and what not, it's better to be safe than sorry.

And security your private key, mnemonic phrase through their product might be a good idea. Or better yet, by @fillippone Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers

Defend Bitcoin and its PoW: bitcoincleanup.com
Is there any particular reason why you promote this company? I have nothing against them and it's a great product, but there are many other options that allow you to do the same thing. Maybe newbies would like to know all of them? Choose what is convenient for you, for example there are plays that you can etch by scratching your seed. There are plates that you stamp with special tools, even reusable ones like keystone where you can rearrange the letters into different words when you decide to make a new wallet.

Never used these things myself, to me these are all gadgets and rather than a steel plate or a drum for $100 I'd prefer to buy a hardware wallet.

I sure should be posting this in the hardware wallet board, but because I want this to reach to as many as possible, most especially, newbies, I decide to post it here.

So, for those of you who are looking for a better way to keep your wallet seed phrases and passwords safe and secure without having to write them on a piece of paper and bury somewhere, of which they could get eaten by termite and other inserts, or use cloud storages to store your seed phrase and passwords, of which the cloud service provider could get hacked, or your account as well could get hacked..

So the better option is to own and use this device(cryptosteel), to safely and securely store your seed phrase and wallet passwords.

You can check out the device on https://cryptosteel.com/shop/
Or find it on ledger on https://shop.ledger.com/products/cryptosteel-capsule-solo
