I believe the backup codes are printed from your gmail account and not the account your using it with. I could be wrong but that's how I understand it.
I personally use authy as it supports multiple devices. I have my tablet as a backup. No internet connection required either
The gmail backup codes are only when you set up 2FA on a gmail account. For cryptsy, I think the only way to have a backup is to have a print out of the Qr code. Before trying it I want to make sure I can print out the Qr code, otherwise I will have no back up which is not an acceptable situation.
BTW I'm paranoid and I'm not sure I can trust authy, a third party. Google is more trustworthy I think.
