If all you want is to mine the coin then you can send your mined coins directly from the pool to an exchange without having to have your wallet to sync. Exchanges run optimized versions of the wallets and my guess is that you won't have any problems.

Every time I restart the wallet there are more and more blocks that need updating. The wallet will connect to 1-2 maybe 3 nodes only for brief periods of time at the beginning, then loose the connection to all of them. I believe it will try to reconnect unsuccessfully every now and then if I let it open, because I see the connection status icon flashing.
I use all the node IPs I could find on the forums, including the initial one, and that of some P2P pool I found.
