Everybody is already on polo which whenever a coin is listed there, its going to have volume. When Stratis was listed on Bittrex I wasn't trading it but after learning its going to be listed on polo, I started trading with it. It has become popular for all altcoin traders because the owner paid everyone when it was hacked few years ago. It gained reputation from users which until now the story was passed on that is why I know that story.  Polo also don't require IDs from traders which makes it better.
I find it rather fascinating, how Polo has gained so much trust. Afterall, nothing is known on who the owners are, right? Where is Poloniex located, and why can't some people trade there? Poloniex has basically become the US Dollar of cryptocurrency exchanges.

Are there actually exchanges that require identification for trading cryptos? If so, which ones? I've always thought only crypto-fiat exchanges require identification.

There are a lot of these exchanges that requires ID such as kraken but this is for those tier 1-4 I guess. Tier 1-4 means that a trader who withdraws $2500 and deposits more than $20,000 in crypto. I logon to my account and tier 1 has the note saying:  Tier 1 You can trade between all currencies, but account funding is limited to digital currencies only.

For tier 4 traders, they allow them to withdraw (crypto) $100,000.00. You can understand why they require all these IDs for sure. I think this applies to some other exchanges like bitfinex

Have always and will always use Poloniex for trading altcoins. I've experimented with other exchanges such as Bitfinex, BitTrex and Cryptsy in the past, but none of them have been as good as Poloniex. Also the massive volume in Polo makes it a good place for me.

Lately I have been buying some shitcoins in YoBit for a few thousand satoshis, and gotten some decent returns out of those. But since they don't delist coins and list any shitcoin for a fee, I will only play with small amounts, as it is risky.

What is the current exchange that everyone is using? I haven't played with altcoins in quite some time.
there are many exchanges today for the cryptos, but the major exchanges are Poloniex, Bittrex, Yobit and C-CEX.
Yobit has a wide list of coins to trade because they never delist a coin unlike the others.

Yes yobit is popular and well known for having vast of undervalued coins. That's why yobit is one of the current top exchange they are being loved by those traders that are into low value of coins. But for me, it will always be a good choice if you will trade with Poloniex and bittrex.
Yobit is less popular and it'e not one of the top exchanges. Yobit lost their good positions in recent months. Yobit have to improve their support, because it always was major problem of this exchange. Maybe they need to hire more staff.
If to try answer OP answer, I don't think that exchange used by everyone exists. I think everyone have their prefered exchange. Most popular exchange is Poloniex, but I don't think it's used by everyone.

They became less popular of the same complains of their traders for having a poor support. And is that right? That they are already upgrading their support and that's a good move for them, hiring more staffs are good as long as they can support the 24 hours operation which can bring them back to one of the top spot.

I dont think yobit deserves to be on the top spot of good exchangers even though they have improved their support staffs. Too many complains come from yobit users from time to time. Their interface is also not attractive enough to be one of the best exchange site.
Recently, I only use bittrex and some time poloniex.

Any coin can get on Yobit.  Just pay the 0.1btc fee and you're listed.  It is no where near being a top exchange.

I only used Poloniex and C-cex until now, i don't trust other exchange sites, especially Yobit. Just go to scam accusation section, there are lots people complaining about their EDC, and their account got freezed.

the best altcoin exchanger this now
1 poloniex
2 kraken
3 bittrex
4 and you want get much profit but is high risk you can try trading in yobit, in there volume transaction is big too, so chance can get big profit is big
Yobit is the worst exchange site, they have terrible support, and faked their pump/dump by themselves.

The current exchanges that people are using are the same exchanges that were poeple using late last year.

But what I want to mention is that it dependa on the coin you want to exchange and the volume on different exchanges.

Liqui is giving me a good feeling using it but I dont prefer or recommend you to store there a huge amount of bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies.

Exchange best is still held by poloniex and bittrex. because if trading volume bitcoinya there quite a lot. and suppose that we buy coins and coins were dropped from the original price, there may be returned to the original price

poloniex.com and you can see that from coinmarketcao's daily volume list. although I personally choose bittrex over it.

but it doesn't matter which one everyone is using you should look at other things such as
how honest they are,
if they are going to run away.
if their platform is even safe.
if they accept you from your country.
will they ask your personal information.
is the platform reliable or does it go down whenever there is a slightly more traffic.
how are the fees.
do they have the coins you want to trade and is the orderbook big or is it thin.

these are the question that you need to think about yourself.

you only thing yobit is popular because they have had lots of signature campaign participants who advertise it day and night and since they get paid inside the exchange account they stay there and have no experience with any good exchange and think yobit is as good as it gets.

They can be grouped base on volume of sales, large number of crytocurrencies and ability to make traditional exchanges to fiat. This purposes they serve require the use of more than one exchanges depending on what u want to do?
