Hedera Hashgraph Launches Mainnet Early Access Program

Developers and Consumers Can Now Earn Hbar Cryptocurrency for Developing on and Testing the Hedera Mainnet

Hedera Hashgraph, a next-generation public ledger designed to have highly diversified governance and the most distributed consensus at scale,
today announced the launch of its initial community testing program.
The first phase of the program allows developers and the community to test the mainnet and testnets, and earn up to 1,000 hbars,
Hedera’s native cryptocurrency, for testing the network and developing third-party applications.
The Hedera Wallet and new sample applications - including a content site, The Daily Timestamp,
and a micropayments Chrome extension - are now available for consumers to test using hbars.
Developers can now also gain access to testnets to begin building applications at no charge,
and have access to new developer resources at Hedera.com.
To register for the Hedera mainnet and/or testnet, visit Portal.Hedera.com.

January 3, 2019 marks the 10-year anniversary of Satoshi Nakamoto mining the Bitcoin Genesis Block.
An action that set in motion the economic and technological revolution that has not only redefined the ways
we transact and interact with money in our daily lives,
but will continue to have a massive impact on the technology underpinning our economic and social systems.

At this meetup, we will take time to reflect on the contributions of blockchain pioneers, lessons learned,
and how the industry is adapting to the needs of a more sophisticated and security conscious market.

Hedera Hashgraph President, Tom Trowbridge, will be sharing a presentation of how we got here,
and how Hedera plans to do its part to help shape the future of the industry.

Building the Developer Community with a Designated Hedera Hashgraph StackExchange Site

We’re excited to share the launch of the Hedera Hashgraph StackExchange site, a community-driven Q/A forum for developers from all over the world to learn,
contribute and grow the knowledgebase surrounding Hashgraph.

StackExchange is a community-driven question and answer network for technical topics related to anything from programming to health and fitness. Each of these topics have their own subdomain and community members of these fields explore this site to get their questions answered from leaders in the space. Many of the common questions in scientific fields are answered on their respective StackExchange site, including questions about existing protocols and cryptocurrencies.

Hashgraph: What You Need To Know
Will Blockchain Take a Backseat to Hashgraph?

Blockchain, the technology behind Bitcoin, is being explored across many industries that are seeking to bring transparency,
immutability, and efficiency to the table. Major retailers and corporations like IBM and Wal-mart are pursuing a variety of applications
for the technology. Smaller, independent ventures are plentiful as well.
Use cases range from supply chain tracking, documenting land ownership, and redefining healthcare.

Despite the hype, and like any new technology, blockchain is not without its deficits.
Now, thanks to an algorithm invented by Leemon Baird, distributed ledger technology (DLT)
is moving beyond the limitations of blockchain.
It appears possible that the solution to blockchain’s unsolved challenges may lie in what Baird calls “hashgraph.”

UNLOCK met with Tom Trowbridge President of Hedera Hashgraph, to talk about what he says is the best Distributed Ledger technology platform out there today. On the website Hedera dubs itself as the trust layer of the internet. Trowbridge explains, “Since 2012, we have been developing the next generation of distributed ledger technology.

The Hashgraph uses an algorithm developed by Professor Leemon Baird who is also Co-founder and CTO of Swirlds the company that manages and patented Hedera Hashgraph. The algorithm allows a distributed and decentralized community to reach consensus between nodes/members very fast (100,000 transactions per second). When it comes to security it uses Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant". It uses Virtual Voting, a voting system – without having to do the votes, to achieve consensus Hashgraph uses a protocol called “Gossip about Gossip”

Hedera Hashgraph started opening up testnets to a wider audience of developers.
Hedera SDK is written in Rust, compiled to C, then wrapped in your favorite language.

There are few fundamental guidelines to Hedera SDK strategy:

1. One code-base to rule them all. We’re writing the core SDK in Rust. We chose Rust because it’s safer, faster, and compiles down nicely to C. This is great because we get Rust and C SDKs right out of the box. We can then wrap the C SDK in any language. These additional language interfaces will reference the same C artifacts, making it easier to enforce consistency between different languages, especially when it comes to things like cryptography, key management, account management, Protobuf API interfacing, and network config management.

2. “More languages” is more important than “more functionality”. We’re starting with 5–6 languages that will expose the most basic functionality to support micropayments. We’ll then build out functionality until each language’s SDK reaches a minimum viable product (MVP) state. Future MVP functions include file service, claims, smart contracts, multi-sig accounts, and some initial transaction and query validation. Those languages will include Rust (duh), C (duh), Go (wrapper), Python (wrapper), and Javascript/Node.js (wrapper).

3. Using a builder-pattern makes transactions more fun. We were tempted to build a very comprehensive and object-oriented SDK, but realized that trying to be “everything to everyone” is a failing strategy. SDKs are meant to make things easier, so let’s focus on use cases first. The builder pattern is more conversational (example below).
