The main problem of every blockchain is scalability (the number and speed of processes simultaneously happening within the system). So I think the main efforts of developers in the nearest couple of years will be trageted at improving the scalability of existing blockchains (in the first place bitcoin) and creating new systems with the embedded abilities to quickly process multiple transactions at a time.
