Hello,

I'm a newbie on BTC world. About 1 year ago i bought a small quantity (~ 0.033) just to learn more about it.

Somedays ago i decided to sell it and get the money back. I used Electrum to send the BTC to the address below :

33gpwt9uSxf6vh5Cw1osfmJ8HN18Y6ciyy

I'm pretty sure i typed the correct address (actually i pasted it), as i'm not a computer noob. But the BTC never reached this address and somehow Electrum shows another address on its log :

3CqJDvCfA7AAtzbPDyWE1jby1uxTzzeGHH

I'm on a Mac, and my machine probably is not infected with any viruses, i suppose.

Here is the transaction ID :

20d0c70d9e88b1e774b91bc1766dd41e4858e6ff42222186347e7ba5b00bb9ef

Am i scammed ? How can i track what happened ?

Thanks

where do you copy the bitcoin address? Sometimes this is not a virus because as we know that the Mac operating system is quite good and it is almost impossible to insert a virus. It looks like you were hit by phishing, where when copying the bitcoin address it will paste another address. this can be done only with javascript in the browser.

Thats been an issue for a very long time, your pc is injected with a script that automatically paste that address. There are many complains out here that have the same issue as you.Yeah you are scammed and you lose money all you can do now is prevent it on happening again by reformating your pc

What makes you think Macs are safe? Apple? Ask them to refund your lost bitcoins and see how well it goes...

No, if you wanted to be safe, you should have booted with a live Linux distro. This has all the signs and tells of a typical address replacing malware.

Also, you could have used the preview button to double check, and triple check you were pasting the correct address in case it was a genuine mistake.
absolutely right I really agree we have to carefully enter the adres and check in several times, because remembering that our own transactions must be careful, because one of the letters or numbers causes you to lose your bt

Chances are you have copied the wrong address, so the bitcoin you send does not reach the wallet you want

Clearly upon all the replies and checking you are a victim of either keyboard hacking or you have sent in a wrong address yourself..it’s really disappointing but it happens sometime as I already did one time of copying the address but since I didn’t give a time to check the address so I loss the amount though it’s only .003btc

Are you sure your bitcoin has been sent to that address? sometimes it takes a long time to get to another wallet, waiting for some verification.
Lol at least it won’t take a week or months before arriving, basically OP was hacked

Which wallet did you use ?
First of all you shouldn't just use any kind of wallet there is a lot of scams out there , if the company of the wallet is like , still answering your questions then you should contact their support team .
You should actually be fast you know, the clock is ticking just contact them as fast as you can with the transaction ID, and take Screenshots if required.
Best of luck I just hope you get the amount back.

Are you sure you had downloaded Electrum from a genuine source? It might also be that you had downloaded an infected version of Electrum which changed the address by itself when sending bitcoins.
Also if this is not the case then the most probable scenarios are either your pc was infected with copy paste malware or you had pasted a wronf address by yourself which I don't think you would have done.
If possible post the source from where you had downloaded the Electrum wallet.
I suspecte the bitcoin was sent to a wrong address from his explanations one will see that it either his system was effected by malware which change the address pasted or he sent the bitcoin to an ethereuem address which can result in the lost of his bitcoin forever.

I'm not sure, but by your description, I guess you have been attacked by a malicious code and your computer's cache, when you copy it it will automatically return to the original wallet but in the malicious code has been scored.

Looking at the description of your story, maybe your bitcoin has been hacked by someone so that in your wallet there is no bitcoin

Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe you paste the wrong wallet address not really the address you use before. That's why even you copy paste the address you still need to check it two, three or more times to be sure it is correct before sending it.

Base on your statement since your coin was sent to a different Bitcoin address most probably yes. You were scammed on unknown style and you are the first person ive heard with that kind of scenario.

I don't have any AV software on my machine.

What could i use to check my Mac for this kind of malware ?

Such statements and questions do not reflect a person who has 20 years of experience in software developing. Although some claim that using of antivirus / firewall / antimalware is useless, someone like you should know that this is not the case.

If you are 100% sure that you download from official site, then you are victim of probably clipboard malware which change recipient's address. But since you have completely unprotected device, there are other possibilities how hacker can get in your device, maybe you have remote access trojan.

The most likely situation i can think is a downloaded an infected Electrum app from its official site.
I highly doubt that... especially if you can verify the digital signature... did you verify the digital signature? Huh

Given that you're "a software developer with more than 20 years experience", verifying the digital signature shouldn't take you more than a few minutes.

No don't call the above posted number OP. Electrum doesn't have a help desk. No idea what service that is for. The user who posted the number - Gloria4u has negative trust so be cautious.

I still don't know what happened. I downloaded Electrum from it's official site and i'm sure i pasted the correct address. The most likely situation i can think is a downloaded an infected Electrum app from its official site. I'm not a newbie in computers, actually i'm a software developer with more then 20 years of experience.

That's a very bad experience. I lost all trust on this and will never more buy BTCs, better leave my money on the usual investments :p

Hey  look may be its copy paste problem.. but you should  first  your computer. DO you install any antivirus?  Because  sometimes some antivirus softwares are also scam and  they may damage  your files.. so be careful..

I don't have any AV software on my machine.

Is the Electrum app trustable ? I downloaded from https://electrum.org/#home
Then there is a great chance that it was a malware or a virus.
It is not new in crypto currency there are plenty of incidents like this.
You should really make sure that your computer or gadget that you are using for crypto transactions are always safe .
