However, futures do usually track spot price. That may be because a professional trader will probably want to hedge with the underlying asset. So if futures go parabolic, they might buy more btc to cover some of their losses if they are in a short (sell) position and vice versa.
Demand for bitcoin, therefore, may rise as a hedge.

No, I do not think so. Moreover these Bitcoin futures show that now more people trust BTC and believe into its cool future.

No, I don't think so, they are different from each other. I think bitcoin will still remain high even if there are new coins will be available. Bitcoin is the 1st crypto and I think the price of bitcoin will continue to rise.

The buyers in the futures market are seprate from the buyers of actual Bitcoin.

Bitcoin may experience an attempt at manipulation from time to time.
But the futures market only brings in buyers that would not have explored this option before.
All the press, hedge fund, and broker interest in Bitcoin has only solidified its permanency.
Short sellers will get squeezed with no mercy.

The more Bitcoin is talked about, the more exploratory buyers will adventure in.
Any 'crash' will quickly be bought up and a floor will be established.
It will never go to zero.
They have had 8 years to stomp out Bitcoin, it is far too late for that now.
Governments will only incorporate it to suit their own needs and perceptions, as greed & profit will prevail.

Thanks for your explanation.

Rightly pointed that the Future market will bring in stability and the (+-)20% fluctuation will stop.
Going forward the Bitcoin might not go up or down as it used to be. and that is good for the future and for the people.

I think not. I saw a stat that said 600+ futures contracts with January 2018 expiry already sold and many more with March 2018 expiry awaiting to be sold. The value shouln't get impacted. infact I believe this will push the prices of bitcoin up after a short correction.

I think it bitcoin future is bringing a positive side to the market now, in the past few days weve seen the market price of bitcoin drops at an enormous price but now bitcoin is gaining its price again, incorporating bitcoin future is currently good right now.

Really hard to predict bro. I know that we all have been waiting for financial institutions to embrace bitcoin. But if they could have the ecosystem because of market manipulation then its better they get out. However, let's give them a chance and see everything from the perspective of non-investors. I'll remain optimistic though that with this new cash going in, bitcoin can get to 20K at the end of the year. I'm still looking at the price and it looks like from $13K to $16K means that it has made a lot of investors interested and getting at the market today. Again, its hard to predict but the initially salvo looks promising in terms of the prices.

Yeah its really hard to predict but after the future came in, the market has been steadily gaining its weight again, im also optimistic about the future but i cant help but to be excited that bitcoin future will bring new heights to bitcoin, its understandable that the price may be 13k-16k for now but lest see after the end of the year on what is truly bitcoin future is.

I read the article and it made partial sense. The problem though is that the author is merely speculating as well, that the people currently buying bitcoins would rather buy futures. I don't think this is the case. There would come a time that people will decide which one to do, trade bitcoins or trade bitcoin futures. It depends really on their strategy.

What strikes me about the article is he has a point with the possible crash due to banks shorting it. Remember that a few weeks or months a go banks were all against bitcoins and then after a few weeks they were all buying it. They might have gotten wind of these futures contracts and they did buy a hell lot of it. Hence they could just place a huge short position and sell all their bitcoin holdings. Resulting into a crash and them profiting big time as well.

I agree on the above posts, I think it is really early to say things about Bitcoin Futures, besides it's just started their operations, There is no Big Dump on BTC's price as of now, but if you want to look for another opinion, Here is the unpopular opinion on the OP: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bearish-side-of-futures-not-shorting-2547718 , you may read it and try to digest it, I think he has his own opinion basing from that post, I cannot still say or predict what will happen on Bitcoin Futures and there is no assurance if Bitcoin Futures will really help Bitcoin and there is no also proof that Bitcoin Futures has hidden agendas/bad intentions on Bitcoin. We need to still need to wait more time and be observant enough on what Bitcoin Futures future effects/dangers/benefit on Bitcoin.

There is trouble abrewing
Do bitcoin futures make the bitcoin price crash?

people are certainly hoping for it to happen but nobody dares sell their bitcoins. and whales surely did manipulate the market and even caused panic where weak hands dumped in fear but apparently the price is more resilient to this type of nonsense.

we may see some more big fluctuations because of bitcoin futures an mainly the "uncertainty" about them but soon it will be fixed and we will be back on track like before.

Nah! I need more bitcoin to hold for more profits, it’s better to believe and be optimistic with it. It is cryptocurrency at its best and predicting after this event makes me more positive than ever. Popularity +new investors only show me good price hike nothing else, so I bet everything is ready to ride along this moment. So take hold or left behind.

From its popularity I think it will increase the countries that would be legalize bitcoin as a currency (alternative's currency). Will be more people again wanna be to connected with bitcoin from various citizens. And of course it will not allowing bitcoin price to be crashed even would be lose on its value, it's highly impossible.
I'm still convinced and still believe to date, that bitcoin will still tends lead to the altitude over time despite accompanied by some decline phase.

Its been 2 hours after futures trading has begun so far no drastic up or lows...keeping fingers crossed!

What are you talking about? There was an instant surge upwards of 20%, which triggered a trading halt due to the volatility. The spot market rose in tandem: it's up ~$2000 since the futures market launched. For whatever reason, the CBOE site became inaccessible shortly after. I'm not sure if it's a surge of trading interest from institutions, a coincidence, or something else. Per their Twitter account:

Quote
Due to heavy traffic on our website, visitors to http://www.cboe.com may find that it is performing slower than usual and may at times be temporarily unavailable.  All trading systems are operating normally.

In any case, it seems like those that were predicting that CBOE futures would cause a bitcoin crash were clearly wrong. Who knows, though? Maybe the price will crash on the CME launch next week. Tongue

It seems yesterday we've seen bitcoin crash, bitcoin droplets are so felt but give a very good impact to the market. People re-buy btc and btc back crawling up. very hard to see what will happen in the future, I just think positive that bitcoin in the future will continue to grow without any cause whatsoever.

it is too soon to say anything for sure.
so far there has been lots of different speculation regarding the new markets. some of them are saying it will crash and that created a rather widespread panic that causes the recent crash too. although the size of the "crash" was not really big. it was 25% which is medium with bitcoin standards.

i say if this week passes and price stays above $14k-$15k then you can be more sure than there won't be any "crash" anymore. besides these markets will be somewhat separate from real bitcoin market and are very tiny in comparison since they are restricted to one place whereas bitcoin is global.

Flying Hellfish is a Commie
While the person does have some points, I wouldn't call them good points by any means. I actually wouldn't trust anything from anybody which is shared on a public forum like that, as its most likely trying to be used to influence people to in turn influence the price. I don't think BTC futures being offered is going to effect the price at all, this is just a tad more money being pumped into Bitcoin where we already have a SHITTON of traders who are here.

This is nothing compared to the volume we have right now, so no.

I actually think that the futures will do good to Bitcoin overall. As written in the first post, the more exposure Bitcoin receives, the more buyers will jump in and this will drive price eventually up. I dont care much for short term ups and downs, in the long run there is only one direction for Bitcoin.
The increasing popularity of bitcoin today has proved that bitcoin has enormous strength. Increased bitcoin users today also become a benchmark proving that bitcoin has become a medium of payment used globally. Although not widely acknowledged officially, but bitcoin will go in that direction.

Decentralization Maximalist
I've observed the market a bit this afternoon/night. At first the future price for January 8 begun its journey at about ~16K, then lowered a bit, then rose a bit and now it's on ~18500. After the rise, the Bitcoin price also rose to about 15800-16500 on major exchanges.

It's too early to draw conclusions, but I think the futures will not be only bullish. Because the following statement is incomplete:

The buyers in the futures market are seprate from the buyers of actual Bitcoin.
[...]
But the futures market only brings in buyers that would not have explored this option before.

The futures market bring in also sellers, not only buyers. In fact, every futures trade, like any other trade, has a long and a short position. Supply and demand for both positions will determine if the future price goes up or down. And the financial guys are not necessarily Bitcoin freaks.

What I think is that futures could lower volatility. That would be extremely positive, even if that likely means that if the rally continues, it will do so much slower than now.
