very simply, because each blockchain has different rules

a blockchain is a batch of data where the identifer is a hash of that data.
this solidifies the batch into a block of data whereby if any data in the block is changed, the identifier changes.
this identifier is then put into the next block with the next blocks new data. thus chaining the blocks together

and edits of the first block changes the identifier which then obviously changes the content of the next block as the identifiers wont be the same which then has a easy to spot check mechanism for edits, while also making it harder to edit earlier blocks when more and more blocks are added as you then have to re hash each block there after.

a blockchain block identifier is not fixed to be sha256 hashing, not fixed to using PoW mining, and the contents are not fixed to be transactional/financial. each and any blockchain can be designed to do different things

I cheated my way thru in a job interview, for the role of the content writer of exchange, now my boss asks me to write about blockchain but I know nothing about it. Could you guys just give me a basic rundown of.... *Things?*. Anything and everything you feel would be nice to know here
The Blockchain is quite simple to understand and I hope this rough explanation takes some of the mysterium out of it. The Bitcoin Blockchain is a decentralized transparent public ledger.
The blocks are records of time stamped transactions on the network. Each block contains cryptographic hashes of the previous block, making altering the ledger null and void.

Blockchain is a distributed database existing on multiple computers at the same time. It is constantly growing as new sets of recordings or blocks, are added to it. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to the previous block, so they form a chain. The essential thing about a blockchain is that it records any transaction among parties, so it can be conceived as a distributed ledger. Once recorded the data cannot be modified or replaced, so it’s immutable and verifiable. Also, a blockchain can be programmed to automatically carry out transactions using smart contracts technology.

If you want more basic information i would suggest to read the original bitcoin whitepaper from Satoshi. you can download it from https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

It is a kind of decentralized database. Because it runs in several (redundant) internet nodes, it always stays online (in "the cloud"). Also, each data entry has a crypto algorithm securing it against the previous one, which means you cannot alter the earlier ones anymore without breaking everything, this gives it authenticity, as long as there are several nodes physically separate so that any attempts to defeat this becomes too costly to carry out.

A blockchain alone isn't good enough if it isn't decentralized enough, you have to have several nodes worldwide or it looses its main advantage over more traditional databases.

Simplified, it can be represented as a large distributed database, which reflects the movement of funds or information from one account to another. This database is stored on millions of computers that belong to different owners around the world. Its main advantage is that it has a decentralized nature.

That is, the "death" of one or more computers on the network does not lead to a fatal result since the data remains on other computers.

that is a common question that crypto users should understand, Blockchain is a system of recording transactions in many databases that are widespread on many computers, With this decentralized transaction record, it is almost impossible to change unilaterally, without changing the majority of all databases.

With the transparency of blockchain everyone had interest and huge company and now one of the big country look forward to use blockchain as their system. even hospital can use blockchain for their records to easily found and not easily to lost even even though it has been stored for a long time. blockchain system is really awesome for long run. with that technology we can improve even more and there's a lot more to use.

I cheated my way thru in a job interview, for the role of the content writer of exchange,

Isn't this ironic?

We are hiring! Looking for community managers to cover 24 hours for TWO groups - English and Chinese - for a Cryptocurrency Exchange in HK.

So from hiring, you went to be hired?  Grin

Other than that you were working for an exchange, you've spent almost two years on this forum and you have no idea what a blockchain is?
Nothing here will be able to explain that to you in a way it is going to help you write content, that if your boss wants content that is worth more than the one created for 5$ on fiverr.

Seriously, do your won research starting from Wikipedia to go through all the forum posts, blogs, news articles, and research papers sources linked there, otherwise, you won't be able to come with more than two lines of text.

A simple explanation here won't get you more than a paragraph and an early unemployment ticket.

If you had fool your boss then I'm confident that you can think how to get through this and Google won't hurt anyway, does it?
And even if you gather some info here it wouldn't be enough and it will surely reflect on how you write and explain your article. So without thinking it many times, tell your boss the truth and who knows, he'll forgive you for telling the truth and give you another chance.

Wish you luck for your writing.

take your time to open and read a little explanation about Blockchain technology here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockchain.

and also a broader explanation of Blockchain technology here https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/blockchain.asp.

You should have told your boss the truth because he will still notice the truth despite having the definition of it. You can define Blockchain through the searching and asking but learning about it will take time and it will be a long process. Just don't cheat next time because that could lead you into mess and mistakes in the future. It's still better to be honest and accept that you know nothing about a certain thing.

You are cheated because you are pretending that knowledgeable on your job but the truth you did not know what it is. Instead of relying upon people's opinions here why not just research your own. There's google and youtube for the video presentation about blockchain and how it is work if you use this system. As friendly advice just research this your own.

Here is the simple explanation, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockchain.

You said "cheated"?

Well well, even if you manage to pass this test, I doubt you'll last in your position if you don't figure it out by yourself. Instead of cheating to get a job, you better increase your skill and run another interview (no cheat at all).
Cheating doesn't give you any good results, so it's best to stop by and learn about blockchain first and how it's used.

If you pass that, your work will still not be good because you will not be able to do the content because you have zero knowledge about what blockhain is.
Cheating won't help an individual to grow; However, learning will never stop.
He passed the job, then it's his responsibility now to prove that he can do the job by learning everything he needs to know about it.

Point well made, OP is literally in a bad situation right now but guess what? its his/her choice at the first place. You know what someone lose the opportunity because of that, maybe they are much more deserving than you but now you are suffering the consequences of your actions. Well its better if you find out things on your own, because in that way you will easily understand things. You can't just depend on people's opinion and thoughts about blockchain, you need to have your own exploration.
These will depend on his task deadline, if he think he can still certify his position and have time to studied blockchain overnight then he can continue it and act as if he's not cheating. He can create details as newbie but maybe not the way the boss expected it on him. We know the opportunity is there but if it will make you suffer from the rest of your stay in that company since you lied to them better tell them the truth or work hard to be like "what they expect you to be, like what your cheat submission, your call"
Learning takes time depends on an individual understanding. If he believes in himself that he can do it before the said deadline, then he may cover his cheating activity. If he did it, then he can secure his position on the job.
He can't provide a deeper explanation for now and it's the consequence of cheating, but after having a research and he still remains the same, his job will be out of his reach.

Put really simply, a blockchain is a chain of blocks (duh) where each block consists of several transactions. Each block is connected to the block before it and thus they form a chain. When you calculate all the transaction over all the blocks in a blockchain, you get the balance in each address. You can't change a block in between and re-insert it to the chain because each block is connected to the previous block. And you can't just add funds to yourself because the system is decentralized, which means everyone who has a node has a say over what next block will be, and the longest blockchain is usually the approved one. So trying to trick the system won't work unless you have the ownership of over the half the nodes. There are all kinds of methods on how to confirm if a block or a blockchain is valid, such as proof of work and proof of stake (simply put, calculating/guessing the number that decrypts the block), and changing the difficulty of this confirmation process sets the time required to decrypt/mine a block. Too low and the system becomes less secure, too much and the system stops working.

There are tons of videos on Youtube and other platforms that you can watch. I believe others have already linked a few.

Good luck and hope you don't get fired. Don't cheat next time Smiley

You are in for a lot of research for that kind of job. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. As for your question, blockchain is a distributed, decentralized ledger that can store huge amounts of information, such as cryptocurrency transactions. The information is packed into groups called blocks, which are recorded and stored chronologically. There are private and public blockchains, where public ones are available for anyone to inspect, and private ones require permission to access. All data stored on the blockchain is immutable, and the only way to change anything is to have the community that runs it to agree to change it simply by adding new information, that overwrites the old one. This makes it impossible to hack, as you would have to hack more than half of the network members, who are located all over the world. Basically, it is as secure as it can be. There is also the issue of mining, which is the process of solving blocks and verifying transactions, which is what crypto miners do. In return, they get rewarded with a certain amount of coins. This is all very basic and something that any article could tell you. The best way to move forward is to do your own research, which will be a lot of reading.

Here is my one of my favorite explanations of Blockchain and Bitcoin: http://jrruethe.github.io/blog/2015/04/26/bitcoin-analogy
It is in analogy

Back then as newbie I was able to understand Blockchain easily with the analogy.
I remember reading somewhere that not everyone understands things explained in metaphor. Hope it makes sense to you.
