Could avoid some headaches for newbies. And some not so newbies.

we already have a topic in "beginners" board: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/general-bitcoin-wallets-which-what-why-1631151 explaining different types of wallets and the respective links to each project's website. i think that is more than enough, since keeping track of what new version is out is a very hard task specially with very active projects that keep releasing newer versions regularly. checking the project's website is a better and easier solution.

I don't see any reasons why it would be bad idea. Listing main wallets with official download links of recent software versions could be really helpful. It's quite common problem when people download wallets from random fishy links and then they lose BTC.
But I think, first of all someone can make such thread and update it frequently. And if this thread will be helpful and useful for community, mods can make this topic pinned later.

The most common apps for bitcoin here (as far as I know) are electrum and bitcoin core.

Bitcoin core has part of the announcement above and selectrum can be set to show it in the wallet.

There's then another issue of what to include and what not to, most of the time I look at when an app is updated on my phone to work out when I need to update it on desktop (it's not a good idea but and upadte still gets done at a reasonable time). I did have problems when I started using electrum that I'd have no idea when an update was avaliable, but unless it's a critical update you don't normally have to do it (and often it's ill advised to do it in case there are any vulnerabilites or tests haven't been 100% completed before releasing the new version).

For all versions of all wallets threads like that come up somewhat regularly.
Should someone post and have @gmaxwell and  @achow101 [the mods of the wallet software forum] make sticky a list of the latest versions of the wallets that are listed and the official download locations.

Could avoid some headaches for newbies. And some not so newbies.

The downside is someone or someones would have to stay on top of several different pieces of software for several different platforms and keep it updated.

Figure a discussion about it here would be good.
