I do not adhere to old traditions. Moreover I think they are complete nonsense. I think that in traditions of the past religions try to act on the present. Religion is also a tradition of the past.

Traditions may not necessarily be religious. But family traditions are very useful. For example, gather every week for a family dinner or go to rest the whole family in a favorite place.

If So Then Why?

A tradition is a belief or behavior passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past. Common examples include holidays or impractical but socially meaningful clothes (like lawyers' wigs or military officers' spurs), but the idea has also been applied to social norms such as greetings. There are about 150 new traditions made each year. Traditions can persist and evolve for thousands of years—the word "tradition" itself derives from the Latin tradere or traderer literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping. While it is commonly assumed that traditions have ancient history, many traditions have been invented on purpose, whether that be political or cultural, over short periods of time. Various academic disciplines also use the word in a variety of ways.

Like a lot of words, 'tradition' has many meanings.

You are using the most trivial meaning, and then asking others to accept or reject the word based on the trivial examples.

To the OP. If you even need to ask what tradition is, then I suspect your are pupil of nihilistic Frankfurt School that adores Karl Marx.

Tradition is not only (sometimes outdated) summary of wisdom accumulated over generations, it is also basic building block of ones identity. Why is killing or raping bad? Because others have told you so, you dont have to find out for yourself.

Marxists, who question fundamentals not only rid themselves of well established identity, they also lose its value system in process. You end up with empty shells, that actually consider they hormone influenced "opinions" or even passing fashion to be their very identity. Discussing this very fact with them is found to be highly offensive as questionig their unhinged and borderline autistic beliefs is afront to insulting their identity. Them personally. You can also google Social Justice Warriors, if you are oblivious.

So in short. Tradition is a lighthouse. Something that was build well before us, that helps us how to deal with infinite and dark space all around us. It can be interpreted, upheld or ignored, yet, people who at the very least respect it seem to have both longer lifespan and more far reaching legacy, than people who relish in being ignorant outside of their social bubble - Marxists.

Or even simpler. Imagine old customs as a map. A guidebook on how to orient yourself in the company of fellow human beings for mutual benefit.
A good start to gaining some understanding of the lives of people living in a country is to look at their cherished customs and traditions. These illustrate not only what is important to the people living there, but also how they relax and have fun.

Customs and Traditions in Britain

Britain is full of culture and traditions which have been around for hundreds of years. British customs and traditions are famous all over the world. When people think of Britain they often think of people drinking tea, eating fish and chips and wearing bowler hats, but there is more to Britain than just those things.

Calendar Customs

Calendar Customs are those which happen on on specific day of the year.

Special Days and Events throughout the Year - Calendars of events, special days, national holidays, festivals and celebrations which take place in the UK.

British Folklore, Legends and Superstitions Calendar - Take our adventurous journey through the year with lots of stops along the way to learn about almost forgotten legends and pastimes from our country's folk history.

Unusual Customs and Traditions - A long time ago the year was marked out with special days which marked the passing year. These were days of celebrations where people would do things, eat things or make things which they would not normally do. Cheese rolling, Nettle Eating, Toe Wrestling, Bog Snorkelling are just a few of the strange, bizarre, wacky, eccentric and even mad festivals still taking place in Britain today.

Yup we are what we are because of our ancestors. We must respect them !
It seems to me that most traditions a relic of the past. Many of these traditions are associated with religion. The less faithful, the less will be old and useless traditions. It is impossible to move forward constantly looking back.

A tradition is not only religious, it can be something as ordinary as a traditional cake your mom used to make. The Scotts wear traditional Kilts, in Germany there's traditional Oktoberfest with girls serving beer in traditional Bavarian dresses. In the USA you have Halloween, Thanksgiving and many other traditional days of celebration and customs. Some are relics that we could forget about, but many are an important part of our culture.
You are right. It seems to me that the folk tradition does not involve politics and religion will live, and those which are imposed artificially disappear.

I believe that the traditions of your family need to be supported, it helps to keep in touch with your family and show respect to it. Now there are very few families who have values and traditions.

You are both right and wrong. Respecting your elders is indeed a custom and like all good and useful customs it is actually based in biology and evolution. Whole is always stronger than mere sum of parts. Child is legacy of its parents and parents are for the most of their life pillar that morally and materially support their child. Hand in hand this leads to procreation of life and evolution.

You are wrong in belief, that families are dysfunctional, while society as a whole has crisis of values (well represented by the OP, I think), its the middle class families that keep it from rapturing. If ever son turns against father and mothers will rush to enmasse abort their children, collapse will soon follow. As it is both culturally and biologically a suicide.

By the way, cause especially westerners seem to be extremely misguided by modern education. Family is not dysfunctional, when parents argue or child is spanked for misbehaving. That (human interaction) has been mostly norm around the world for most of human/ape history. Family is dysfunctional, when it works like company of individual units. When all those individuals are held together by some social contract, not by affection or respect.

If the traditions are good, then they can be observed and taught to their children. Traditions may not necessarily be religious.

In our culture, it still important to follow our OLD traditions and Customs and I'm still following it up to this day. Because this tradition has help us shape our characters and our attitudes. Others would argue that old ways hinders progress, but how can we move forward it we don't look at the past? Change is good, but my point is  we should accept traditions as a guide because it is there to protect us from making wrong decisions in life.

Depends, nothing wrong with following it if you choose to and it doesn't negatively affect anyone else.  Never really been a need to follow them, although I am young myself.

I do not think that we need to follow the traditions because it will be different from our time now. It doesn't hurt to follow or believe in those kind of things but still, you believe what you want to.

Where do you live? Where I live Lawyers don't where wigs and military officers don't wear spurs.

And if a "tradition" was created this year or last year it's not yet a "tradition"...by definition.

At least give the old traditions the benefit of the doubt until you find out why they exist.

For example, it is tradition among Americans that if you win $10 million in the lottery, to go out and buy cars and houses and boats and maybe an airplane, etc.

But it is tradition among Germans to ask their parents and family members how to invest the money, and how they can put it into the family business.

This is why American lottery winners wind up poor, while German lottery winners get richer.
